As a Chinese American I can say that everything they said was mostly correct about Chinese food. The food there was dull, bland, tasteless, etc. Boiled chicken and steamed fish are probably the most popular meat even though they have zero taste at all. The food there focuses on making your mouth “feel” good and having a nice aroma, but taste wise there isn’t much there. Even when you go to the butcher, your chances of finding a simple steak, pork chop, or chicken breast is almost zero. It was one of the only things I hated about my trip back to China, beside the lack of internet of course. Also they are wrong about Chinese sausages. That shit is amazing

In the US if they ban tipping they just won't increase pay regardless, and the servers will just get fucked both ways. It's not like banning tipping will magically force the state politicians to pay them well. The restaurant profit models have been built upon shit pay for the servers.
@fakesmilez1
@fakesmilez1 5 жыл бұрын
They'd have to increase pay to a certain extent as most already take into account tips as part of the hourly wage. Without taking into account tips they'd have to at least pay minimum wage then to compensate - usually double what restaurants currently would pay servers per hour. Also note that servers and bartenders actually tend to make the most money in restaurants here in the states, it's the cooks and cleaners that often get shafted.
@rdizzy1
@rdizzy1 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah but federal min wage, and in most states, state min wage isn't a livable wage. Most of these servers would just leave to find different jobs accordingly. And what you would be left with is the bottom of the barrel employees that can't get anything but min wage jobs anyways and therefore customers end up with far worse service. Tipping, in this current landscape is a necessary evil, in my opinion. @@fakesmilez1

It is the most populous Chinese municipality, and is literally the size of Austria. It was also called one of the world's 47 megacities by the UN. 40:10 In America most places that workers get tips at (servers, bartenders, ect.) get a base wage of like $2.50-$5.50 an hour plus tips. The only time the business gives money that the worker "should have earned" is at each paycheck if the amount is not equal to what the worker would have made on minimum wage ($7.25). So say you work one day, make bank and get $300 in tips. but the next day you only get $50 im tips. You will not be reimbursed for that day's work because at the end of the week the paycheck is over minimum wage.

I'm in Wisconsin USA. What Pflax said is true, for servers/bartenders/delivery drivers etc. tips are included in the wages so when I was a waitress I made like... $4.50 an hour because based on average tips you made about $8.50 an hour. As I know it, that's still how it works. And we also have people who bag our groceries (assuming we don't go through the self checkout) Sometimes they'll offer to help bring them to the car but very rarely. So that's still going on here.

in the US restaurant servers generally make only a few dollars an hour (some cities require them to be paid minimum wage though). it's legal because it's expected that they'll be able to make a living wage through tips. idk about food delivery services but I just think it's polite because their hourly wage probably isn't great. I think 10-15% is acceptable for food delivery but 15-20% is pretty standard for restaurants and haircuts and stuff. some stores have grocery baggers still! they're not super common at big chains like Walmart but local and regional chains have them (Thriftway in the PNW, Giant in MD/PA, etc.). usually they just have cashiers do it though.

As far as tips go to the delivery driver for your groceries I think it really depends on how you ordered them. If it was through the grocery store itself I'd say no, as they should already be getting paid for their time there and these also often already have a delivery fee. That said if it is through an app such as grubhub or instacart, then yes you probably should tip as they get paid very little for the work and distance traveled to do this for you.

I think a lot of the reason you can't really haggle in the U.K is a lot of places are big companies, and so it's not really up to the cashier or whoever to give a discount, unless specifically told they can, franchises are obviously different as its not a huge chain to get to a decision, but I have a friend who worked at co-op and was fired because he took sandwiches that we meant to be going in the bin because of used by dates, slightly different scenario but shows that if they're not willing to let you take waste products they're unlikely to be happy about you giving discounts

The hole sandwiches to the bin ordeal is likely because the corporation is liable if the employee were to get sick from eating them. Thus why in the States you will see that many grocery stores will have locks on their dumpsters. Not saying that this is okay or how things should be, more so just explaining the rational a company would have.

re: weird food. Imperial cuisine was all about the rarity and exoticness of the ingredients, so if you could make a delicate plate of sculpted hummingbird tongues in a sauce of camel nipple shavings then that was what pleased the Emperor, and they would put 50 dishes like that out and he would come out and take a nibble from 3 of them then it would all get thrown out. What happens is that any food of regular value goes to the palace, and it becomes a way to experience luxury as a peasant to stew up some cat anus and act like it's imperial cuisine. And yes I am making most of this up but the Forbidden City dealt in some weird-assed food. These are people who drank mercury to try to obtain immortality.

I really don't understand the whole too spicy deal. There are less spicy options in there.

In the US the minimum wage for servers at restaurants is below minimum wage but servers actually make pretty good money. The few states that have attempted to raise the minimum wage of servers to the national standard actually caused them to make less money.

I don't personally eat it but organ meat is way more nutrient rich than regular muscle meat so even though it may be gross (personally) it does have a fairly good reason to be eaten, also Lewis meat isn't unhealthy it's actually very good for you and a excellent source of nutrients and while yes you can eat vegetables and fruits that have those nutrients they aren't as bioavailable as those found in meat, that's not to say there isn't immoralities when it comes to factory farming and the like because there definitely is, however it is a semi-necessary evil because without it millions would die of starvation and the price of other meat products would skyrocket...so unless people start eating more bugs this will remain an issue and probably even so after, it is possible to successfully maintain a health diet that is purely vegan but it takes much more effort and research to find which fruits and vegetables have better bioavailability than the rest but even still you will most likely need to take supplements
