this for some reason scares me, the weird mix of the calm music, the singular repeating millhouse image, and that homer expression being put on everyone who sees it, it just makes me feel uncomfortable, like that this is a sign that something is coming, a sign that something is gonna invade our world, and that whatever is going to invade us looks like that millhouse image, or homer.

In most scenes, the dud only seems to effect one person, which led me to believe it was some alive entity that chooses who it infects with homer face based on anyone who gazes upon the dud, but there are also scenes where a lot of people get infected too, so perhaps instead of being limited to infecting one person, the dud entity can instead choose who to infect as it pleases?

I believe that the dud infects the first person who sees it, when it infects several people it is because they were the first to see it simultaneously

Plenty of people have mentioned that this is a lot like a cognitohazard, but I’d go so far as to say it’s even worse. The way it spreads, from people in their homes to massive groups, religious figures to cults weaponizing it. The way it pervades all aspects of life, appearing in completely innocuous times and places without warning and suddenly changing those who view it. The music and ambience, paired with the imagery of the virus spreading, feels hopelessly melancholy in the face of an unraveling apocalypse. The soft, looping piano punctuating the heightening carnage; the churning sound, like all hope being drowned by an otherworldly force. It’s almost peaceful, like the virus is simply releasing its victims from all higher thought. Lost in a the bliss of nothing as another force changes you, and yet suffocating you in your own body. And no matter what happens, you can’t stop it. It could come at any time and take you and everyone you know and love. The world is ending. It’s futile. Everyone’s got the dud.
