Im fairly certain that situations considered extremely creepy in real life is 30% of all romcoms. I once saw a movie called The Lucky One where Zac Efron played a soldier coming home back from war, searching for this one girl he found a picture of on his dead teammate during the war and he considered a lucky charm. He moves across from the girl and keeps on spying at her through the windows, which I found creepy but the movie portrays it like its supposed to be romantic.

The creepiest aspect to me was that they managed to make him somewhat relatable. After watching the last episode I was shocked about myself because I could actually sympathize with a serial killer.

I dunno just random thoughts: 1. His name was chosen to be Joe, to show that what you might think is your average neighbour Joe, can be a psychopath maniac. 2. I think Peach's character just depicts that there are levels to the stalkers and creeps. Hers being less harmless but still invasive and creepy, and Joe's is the most extreme level of stalking, killing in sake of his obsession. 3. Paco character shows what things could have led to Joe becoming what he is, unstable (or lack) of family that drove him to seek a kind of parent/mentor figure in a person, who was crazy. 4. Beck is everything Joe thought he wants. He thought that his meticulous stalking and researching Beck would help to know everything about her. Yet he imagined HIS Beck. He imagined (or researched and came to conclusion) what her weaknesses, problems are. But in the end it shows that you can never know person 100%. Both Beck and Joe were taken aback by what their partner really was. He was a creep, killer and stalkers - things she wouldn't know or though of. She was a cheater - Joe's worst nightmare.

I love how Joe is such a terrible person, yet the show MAKES us like him. Not only do we get a 1st (and also 2nd) perspective on how Joe thinks, which makes us feel as if hes in the right for some of his actions, but also because the other characters he has to face are just....not good people?

@DwynTwo3 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know. At some parts of the series I loved her, at some I hated her, and I always sympathized a lot with her because of how often she got hurt all while being stalked and manipulated by a psychopath who she thought was the person she could trust the most. So I just appreciate her as a character who isn't black and white, but very real and flawed.

It's funny because I love the story behind Peach. She was literally Joe but in girl form and no one really talks about it. Yes Joe finds out she is Beck's stalker, but it would have been cool to know more about Peaches roots of obsession. Beck says in an episode they randomly met in a party bathroom drunk throwing up. I think peach set it up and had her eyes on beck just like Joe did. When Peach first met Joe she said "weird how you met beck once and suddenly you're saving her life at a train track. You were just there what a coincidence" she automatically had a red flag from him because she knows its a not so coincidental situation to stalkers. She has done to beck and maybe other people the same thing that Joe did. She met or "saw" beck, and the obsession started. She knows the second time she ran into beck in the bathroom, it was by her design. So Peach knows the only way Joe out of all people could have been there to save beck, was by his own design. She couldn't accuse him with what she knows without exposing herself.
@7Mushrooms75 жыл бұрын
Good point! I think that's why she spotted right away that Joe was a creep. Of course she felt jealous and all because she was obsessed by Beck and would do anything to trash talk him to Beck, but at the same time I think she spotted him and that's why she was always so suspicious of him. He's her male version.

white guy of narnia It can be both things. Romance is the force driving the plot. The satire hides in Joe’s narrative musings and the implicit social commentary the show makes. So I’d say both genre descriptors are fitting.
@haggisa4 жыл бұрын
white guy of narnia Oh sure, they’re often used to display how conceited, arrogant, contemptuous, narcissistic or deluded he is. That’s the design behind them. But sometimes, in my mind, they’re also used to satirise both his behaviour and social biases; when Joe’s forced to hide behind the shower curtain of Beck’s bathtub because she nearly catches him spying in her flat, he says “I’m not gonna get caught. I’ve seen enough movies to know things like that don’t happen to guys like me” (comments like that fall under satirical meta-commentary); when he’s commenting in his mind on something her friends said he thinks “Sometimes I think I’m the only feminist you know”, which frames him as the classic, unself-aware Nice Guy TM; when he spots Peach spying on Beck taking a bath, while he’s doing the same thing, he muses “Look at her! She’s invading your privacy! That’s disgusting”,which is the writers’ way of satirising his hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness. There are probably plenty more examples, but I haven’t seen the show in a year, and my memory sucks.

Maybe so, but from the clips, the dialogue is just horrible. My gripe from the little I have seen is they make the surrounding characters more insufferable to make the killer appealing. It's what they do with plenty of these serial killer shows. If you're going to make a show about a killer, don't pussyfoot into it, go balls out. Make the protagonist the killer and show why you should hate him. The victims should be the connection to the audience from the killers POV and the killer should be hated. Enough making douche bag victims and cast. Make them real. Empathetic with fucking natural dialogue. Lol hearing the psuedo-intellectual shit like Gone Girl dialogue with so much pretention, it just turns me off.
@stormauro40345 жыл бұрын
@@tamil8108 I just binge watched the show in one night and if I hadn't perhaps i'd be saying the same thing as you. However after watching it, I realised it is quite incredible and genius and that's because we're no meant to see his victims. Too often does media grow fond in showing us psychopathic killers as the be all or end all of the crazy. These victims being taken out by a mad person, but our fascination comes in exploring the wider world of poor mental health. It is not often that you get a show that so accurately portrays a sociopath, which is the reason why the show can be uncomfortable and unflattering to the victims, because if you don't watch it from his POV, then you're going to miss the type of psychotic that he is. Contrary to your opinion I think the show goes incredibly balls deep into the mind of a killer, the mind of a textbook sociopath, he can't see beyond the face value of those around him, he can't follow social norms, he lies and decieves, he can't make long term plans etc. The way he sees people, and in turn the audience sees them, is the key to his true horror. There's an episode where he does switch perspectives with Beck and in that one episode you really understand that she's normal, the audience gets a break from Joe's psuedo-intellectual prattling and you get a sense of quiet sanity for the audience. I think that episode is executed perfectly, because you truly realise how much noise, analysing and unnatuarly strong opinions Joe has. It's the unbridled crazy of a sociopath, that will never be justifiable. Regardless, of what others say the show does not glorify Joe, or make him any less of a horrible killer, in fact it very much expresses his awful actions and though there is some good in his actions to the boy Paco we must understand that they are self-motivated and not once does he actually feel a desire to 'help' Paco. Yes, we get a moment of sympathy seeing him chained as a young man in the cellar of books, and although those moments imprinted some very dangerous and strong opinions into his mind. His reactions are less than normal. My point is, there's an actual depth to the show and it is well executed. I believe you should give it a chance before you put it down to 'douche bag victims and an empathetic killer'.

So what’s interesting to me is I initially thought they were gonna pull a Dexter and make him be able to kinda be this super charming guy to everyone on the outside world and be able to hide his sociopathic tendencies really well but I noticed there were several times where he would just exhibit little weird behaviors that if you weren’t being observant enough you might miss or not think anything of them. One in particular that I remember is the episode where they’re buying her a new bed and literally tries to go down on her in the middle of the furniture store lmao. Beck understandably is shocked/weirded out that he’d try to do that in public but later forgives him when he apologizes. That right there to me was a huuuuuge indicator that this dude has a skewed sense of normalcy... like I think if I were the girl he was pursuing I would quickly notice the red flags and cut things off, no matter how much of a nice guy he tried to be to make up for it. Beck just really wasn’t that smart of a person to notice his little off behaviors, she never really looked that deep beyond the surface with anything or anyone. I’m glad they wrote her character like that though because it shows that she’s just a random flawed person who isn’t even that great of a person to begin with. It makes you wonder why Joe chose her of all people to obsess over and why he thinks she has so much greatness and potential... Like Karen was much more close to being a “perfect” person than Beck ever was, but I think that’s why Joe couldn’t connect with her - she didn’t “need” him to make her better or to protect her, she was a strong and confident woman on her own. She was also one of the few people to see Joe for who he truly was. Beck was always a weak-willed, weak-minded person who was dependent on others, and Joe saw that and latched onto it, thinking he could be her Prince Charming. Ultimate “nice guy” mentality.

The fascinating thing about abusers/stalkers is that they consider their victims as an aspect in their own lives instead of them being their own person. This leads to them missing the part of a personality that believes “if they’re not a match with you, they’re not meant for you.” Since their victim is just an aspect instead of a person, they see them as ground material to shape and mould what they want in their lives. This leads to not look for a whole person perfect for them, but instead to search for the perfect ground material- that requires a victim to be vulnerable and willing to put up with the type of pressure and changing that comes with the abuse. Joe is a great example of how they think and see the world, and why he chose Beck to become the partner aspect of his life.

Just this review creeps me out. I’ve never seen the show but I didn’t interpret Joe helping the kid as him being humane or whatever. That screamed grooming behavior to me. Joe is obviously a psychopath with deeply rooted narcissism. I’m also super fascinated by the 2nd POV story telling since it makes the whole narrative feel extremely intimate and invasive… just like Joe. Hahahaha.
@Psych0He4d3 жыл бұрын
Nah you should watch the show. The we end up rooting for Joe is because even tho he is a crazy stalking sociopath, he isn’t heartless. He “tries” to do the right thing. He won’t kill a child or have malicious intent towards them, and he helped the little boy because (spoiler warning) he himself was abused as a child. There is no ulterior motive with children. That’s what makes him great cause he’s not a one dimensional villain - he has some humanity which is what has stopped the audience from hating him.

Joe isn't a psychopath. If you seen season 1 and 2, you can easily say that Joe is a man who crave for love, a person who has the need to be loved but he can't be loved, because never felt love. Joe didn't kill all those people because of his own pleasure, he did them because that was his definition of 'Love'. Love is when you sacrifice yourself to protect the other. And that's what Joe did apparently, he just took it too literate. An average psychopath would just kill a person for their own pleasure, what Joe did was kill people for protecting his "lover". His twisted definition of love is what drives him crazy because he never experience actual love and when Beck tries to address what actual love is, he tries to acknowledge it but easily fails in season 2. He is more like a sociopath who think's highly of themselves, who thinks they are the only suitable people for his love interest.

The thing with the series and the book is that, you sympathize with the villain. Note: he IS the villain. To sympathize with him or at some point root for him is what is expected. BUT you have to recognize that what he's doing is super wrong, is abusive, IT'S NOT LOVE! He is a psycho!!! Don't ship him with Beck or even turn the guilt on her, just a warning. Edit: wow I never got that many likes in my life O.O thank you hahahah

@danielaardila50815 жыл бұрын
To be honest I didn't sympathize with his character at all, not even a bit, I don't know with the books but this show was just bad, it's like they didn't even try to make him look like a good person. He is a psycho from beginning to end, like you said.
@lidiafsr5 жыл бұрын
@@LithiumCaryn It's normal not to sympathize with him as well. I've talked to everyone I know who watched the show to understand he's bad and not everyone sympathized with his character, not even from Paco. And it's better like that. I "liked" him the first episodes but then I just wanted him caught or dead lol
@lidiafsr5 жыл бұрын
@@danielaardila5081 I personally love shows about mental illness, and I loved this one because I've seen so many people debating about what he has. YOU doesn't have a confiable narrative, because it's narrated from Joe's perspective. AND there's the fact that everything is seen kind of turbulent specially when he's talking to or watching Beck. So, I loved the show. If you didn't, that's okay too. I watched a lot of videos talking about the differences and simmilarities between book and adaptation. And in the book, Joe is much more calculative(?), manipulative and Paco doesn't exist. So the first idea wasn't to sympathize with him, I think. About the fact they "didn't try for him to look like a nice guy": you're totally right. They didn't try because he isn't. Actually, they included Paco to humanize more his character, but with each one comes the sympathy or not :)
@danielaardila50815 жыл бұрын
@@lidiafsr I love shows and movies about mental illness too, and that's why I wasn't so pleased with YOU, but with a show Killing Eve is very much the opposite, I don't know if you have watched it but just in case I won't spoil it, it really different from this one, not only from who the villain is but that I actually sympathize with this person and that's what I mean when I say that they didn't even try, the purpose was show him as a humane character too being sloppy and all but it wasn't there for me and it was supposed to be this character in that I would identify in some way but not really; that's why I talk about Killing Eve it was the contrary, you see this person and you don't want to like it but you can't avoid it is charming, is gorgeous, is funny, with a bunch of etc and then you realize what has done and you feel bad about it but you can't help to find justification in someway of it's actions. YOU had non of that for me and belive me I know what they went for but it just didn't and it was because of the writing like they wanted us to conect with Joe or with Beck or with someone, but there was no one to connect with, every one was written poorly, plane, two dimensions there was just nothing, except with Karen Mindy, the only sane character, but didn't connect with her either just liked her. And if you haven't watched Killing Eve when you watch it you'll understand what I mean when I say that they didn't even try with him.

What I find interesting is that by all standards, Beck is kind of a bad girlfriend. I mean she doesn't know he's a total psycho and she gets mad at him for pointing out that Peach is in love with her, then finds out he's right. She gets mad at him for following her (justifiably) buttt she's DID cheat on him with the therapist. She treated his suspicions like he was crazy. But she was cheating on him. Oof. It's weird. To be fair at least the writers didn't cop out and make her some personality-less half-assed "perfect" character. All that being said, don't think I'm justifying Joe being psychotic. Dudes belongs in jail (I'm only on the last episode so idk if he's going to jail yet).
@ceciliaaspegren1655 жыл бұрын
Well, in Beck's defence - it's really unsettling to be in a relationship with someone who's always suspicious of you, no matter what you have or haven't done. It's a huge red flag when your partner tells you what to do and who not to spend time with, because it's a sign of controlling behaviour, and it can get ugly really fast. BUT, I still really don't like Beck. To me, she is a two-dimensional character with no depth at all. And the way she shifts from this "good girl" with moral and integrity, to a cheating liar who suddenly doesn't care about anyone but herself is annoying and confusing. I don't know, I just hate her face. But obviously not as much as I hate Joe hahah, f**king stalker sociopath.

I agree, lol though you should put a spoiler warning over this and go a couple lines down for a *Read More* for people who haven't watched yet. This show looks like it does a good job at portraying the mind of a really creepy stalker. I mean the fact he seems to have a heart of gold makes it even creepier because no one on the outside would expect him and we as the audience just sit there screaming at the other characters that this dude is crazy. Personally, for me that's what makes it interesting, I'm not rooting for him or really like him in any way. I mean on netflix it's classified as a thriller, drama, and crime show so I think they are trying to go the mind of a stalker route and it does have me really curious.

What I found very interesting about it is that as the plot moves forward, Joe does several “small” things that could be considered as red flags and indicate his creepy behavior, many of which were things that Beck initially got mad at him for but for some reason (idiotically) later forgave/overlooked. I thought they were gonna portray him as being this perfect dude to the outside world, but there are a lot of tiny cracks in his facade that some people could see through if they were observant enough.
@nora49815 жыл бұрын
That’s what a lot of creepy stalkers are like ... they’re people who do both good and evil things ... they live in their own world. Read accounts of family, friends, neighbors of stalkers turned killers and you’ll understand.
@thirstaefortae50575 жыл бұрын
Nora Exactly. In the normal world, it’s not always black and white. Kind people can be capable of doing bad things and monsters can do good things. Joe was a monster. Beck ignored the red flags because he was good looking and played the role of perfect boyfriend very well. All the while, disguising the obsessive parts of himself until the very end

Another thing I noticed in the story was the metaphor between You and Frankenstein’s monster. When paco says that it’s cool because you can read from the monsters perspective and you know that he’s bad but you find yourself reasoning with him and thinking he’s good even though he’s bad it is exactly what the show tries to do with the people who watch it. You know that what joe does is bad but the way that he thinks makes it seem perfectly reasonable. Its easier to reason with him if you read the book but it’s still kind of the same situation with the show.
