Fought in a war as a young man, put his life on the line, defended our country, .... at nearly 100 years old raises £24MILLION for the people defending our country now. Capt Tom Moore is the very best of British. When he’s no longer with us, I hope he gets a lasting landmark, a bench, something that I can visit when all this horrible virus is just a nasty memory. It’s him and people like him that Keep is all going. God bless him and god bless the NHS.

He is the type of person who makes you proud to be british and as a 16 year old, he is exactly the type of person i look up to and aspire to be. In his amazing lifetime he has had an influence on every single one of us whether it be through his contributions in the war or the money he has raised. *Build a new hospital and name it "The Captain Tom Moore".* On the floor and walls of those hospital corridors, write the lyrics of this song. And when a patient being treated in that new hospital asks "where did the hospital get it's name from?" the answer will surely be, "from the greatest hero of the 21st century". _Once a soldier, always a soldier_ Thank you Mr Captain Tom Moore... I'm only sorry that it's taken your fundraiser for me to know you. Because although what you have done in raising so much money to help those in need is without question legendary, beautiful, inspiring and heartfelt by the nation, you were always a hero even before this. There must be men like you everywhere, who have fought and been through things no man ought to go through. You were already that kind warrior. But few people recognised it. Thank you for making history. Both in what you did for us back then, and what you have done now. I sincerely hope you get your wish to meet the Queen, it's the very least this country could do to attempt to thank you. Thank you for your backbone. For standing up, taking action when many of us saw these unprecedented times of change as just another opportunity to moan about the limitations of our own circumstances. Thank you for thinking about others in need. For putting them first, for finding the strength once more to fight for your country. At such a wonderful age you shouldn't have to be on the frontline. Others should be stepping up, taking your example and the example left by so many others who fought in the wars that gave this country freedom. In uncertain times, let's not become stale and selfish, looking only at what we ourselves lack. Tom looked at what he _did_ have; legs and the use of a garden, and he used those to raise money for those in need. He didn't know exactly how much of an effect that would have. Because he wasn't looking for a reward, or a goal. He simply wanted to help. And that's what counts!

Back in the early 60s I responded to an advert from somebody who was asking if anybody would like to take over the use of his garden. He turned out to be 105 ... his garden had recently become "too much for him". He was caring for his 99 year old brother who had Alzheimer's. He was ex-army , very sharp-minded, and ram-rod straight. Now I'm 77 I keep him in mind when I feel I'm "getting old" ... I go for long walks and avoid sitting down too much. He was born in 1859 .. his grandmother (who he talked about) was born in the 18th century.

Amazing story. Loved reading it. In the year 1968, my great grandmother, Jane, aged 96 was killed on her way home from work by a drunk driver. Dragged a quarter of a mile under the car. She brought up 6 young kids after being widowed and owned 2 houses which was unheard of 100 years ago....for a woman. One of her houses was named in Gaelic...short form....far from the madding crowd long before it was a movie. It was a line from a poem but I don't know which one.

I think you have revealed the now Colonel Tom's "secret". His army training is obviously what gave him the sharp mind! I did based on the fact this is crap. Yeah he raised money and is a veteran but let's not pretend this is a good rendition of the song. Being a good person doesn't make you a good singer.

@@englishmastiff100 oh boohoo i'm not sucking up to the hype train where everything this Tom Moore guy does is considered gold. Get out of here with your superiority complex. You're not "the best of people" just because you jumped on a bandwagon where you worship a guy who walked around his garden 10 times a day and made a single of him mumbling over a choir.

He raised 30million? And why stay at home when we can head down the the English channel & witness the migrant boats come across from France with our own eyes? They land on the beach, casually get out & disappear into the day or night, depending on what shift they prefer to travel? Lol Every day since the start of Covid? Makes you wonder why we had to hide, doesn't it?
