It’s actually really common for women in science to keep their maiden name after marriage so as to not lose the accomplishments that are associated with it
@gabrielabatista6016
@gabrielabatista6016 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I don't get why it seems that on the US (and I think Europe) women seem to simply, throw their maiden name away??? Like, wth? Why would you remove your family's name? I may be wrong here, but it's just so weird to see people simply functionally removing the name that has ties with all their previous family just to adopt their husband's; specially when they don't have a toxic family they want to get away from. Like, here in Brazil I've never seem that happen, the husband's name it's just an add on to your full name; so you still very much keep your maiden name and you still use it; you just get a new extra surname to add in the very end when you marry that you are not even be called by it most of the time. Like, I can count the number of times I've heard my grandma be called by my grandpa's surname, and most of those were people calling her by her full name.

Here's a thing I always think of when the tooth fairy comes up: in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel "The Hogfather" people finally realise why the tooth fairies collect the teeth of children & leave behind money - it's to protect children and prevent their teeth falling into the hands of unscrupulous magic users who could then use the teeth to control them, and the money makes it a legal transaction entered into willingly. It's described as such old magic most people forget it's even magic, and the oldest, original tooth fairy was actually a bogeyman who was so charmed by children they chose to find ways to protect them instead of lurking under their beds. I always think that's really sweet.

I only realized I was non-binary last year (I'm 27), I always had gender related issues just wasn't able to work through them. I only realized because my best friend asked me what I go by (we'd only been friends for like a year and a half at the time and it was never brought up), because she had been referring to me as they since I never told her my pronouns and it seemed to fit me. I spent like two weeks thinking about it and talking to her about it and it was the first time I really felt comfortable in reference to my gender/pronouns. Friends who know you better than you know yourself are great, they just need to start telling us earlier lol.

You know, this month I realised a lot of new things about myself and now I am starting to think about my gender. And it's very interesting bc I feel sooome sort of discomfort in being woman and maybe, just maybe I would be happier and just more... Fitting into myself if I was a man, but all in all it doesn't really matters for me who to be. Like my gender for me is like not even a suit, more of a hat. And if I spent half of my life wearing one specific kind of hats, why to do it, this would be much more interesting to try other kind of hat? What is even more interesting about me that I found out at this insane point of my life is that I feel like our whole society doesn't live for the fullest if we only stick to one gender for our whole lives. Like I just feel it would be much deeper, fullest and right life experience if everyone just went through some time of their life with one gender and then turned into other. And it really sounds like I am not an egg, just curious, but I just imagine what it would be like if I made a transition and it feels pretty nice, more harmonic. But I am definitely not a non-binary, I love concept of genders, I feel like genders are a beautiful way to express your personality and now I suddenly started feeling like other gender might, just might to let me express myself in a more... Me way..? This is not confuses me, but it's a very interesting new expirience for me so that's why I decided to share here, wonder if you or anyone else felt the same and did this exact feeling leaded to such a big change?

@@АлександраГришина-с5р There are non-binary people who aren't agender/genderless. But there are other enbies who are gender-fluid (essentially what you were talking about- their gender varies), demiboys/demigirls (meaning they aren't a man or a woman, but they're closer to one over the other), or bigender (being two genders at once, usually both a man and woman but could also be something like both a demiboy and demigirl), as well as others.

Adults often said something like "You´ll change your mind when you´re older". Sometimes these discussion where more drawn out. One time, I believe I was twelve or thirteen, I argued with my older sister (two years older than me) and my grandma about that. My sister said "But what if your husband wants kids?" and I just replied "Well, then he will have to live without any or he will have to find someone else". Apparently, my sister wasn´t satisfied with that answer. I only just realized how messed up that was.

I can"t believe that they left out Andre Norton, born Mary Alice Norton, in the list of Women authors. She started writing in the 50's and took the androgynous name "Andre" because women were not welcome in the publishing world at the time. She went on to be the first female writer to win the Gandalf award, the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award - "originally known as the SFWA grand master award", and the first woman to be inducted into the Science fiction and Fantasy hall of fame. Fun fact: she had trouble getting published because fantasy publishers said her work had too many sci fi elements and sci fi publishers thought her work had too many fantasy elements. Before her death in 2005 she was commonly referred to as the Grand Dame of Science Fiction and many now famous female authors credit her with being a primary inspiration when they were young.

When I was younger, I hated the idea of having kids. (I'm afab ftm) I was told I would someday want them and to just wait and see how I feel. Now; I do want kids, but not in the traditional way of having them. I didn't like the idea of being mother. But being a father sounds so much more appealing. And even then, I don't want to give birth. I want to adopt/foster. I want to take in older kids that may be over looked because they're not a cute new born baby or a fun toddler. I want to be a father figure for kids who desperately need someone. Early teenagers to late teens or kids who have many siblings that may get separated if adopted. This is in the far future, but that is my goal one day. I want to be successful enough to support this. Even if I don't adopt. Being a foster parent would also be a vibe. And I get it will be hard. I, too, longed to adopt older children, or preferably a ready-made family with older children who would be hard to place, because they are "too old," and "uncute," and would be separated from their younger siblings, because of it. I wanted to keep them together, and give them a new hope and family. I know that the ones who have almost lost hope of adoption will feel grateful for being adopted, especially if it keeps them with their younger siblings. And I get a ready-made family! Whee! Win-win! And then, I expressed that desire on an online forum, and was roundly chastised as being an abusive wannabe, because "You would DEMAND that they PERFORM GRATITUDE to fulfill your savior complex! Get out of here!" I got out of there, and thought, sooooo, they think it's better to leave the older children in the system and split up families, so that only the cute little ones are adopted and the older ones are left in orphanages until they hit 18, and then BAM! They're completely on their own? WHAT?! If THAT is "the moral high ground," then I want no part of it. If you're only allowed to help the people who would not feel any gratitude, because they did not feel any actual need, then that's basically rich healthy able-bodied neurotypical people handing money around to each other while patting themselves on the back for their generosity. I never said I would DEMAND performative gratitude. I said that I would feel good knowing I was helping someone who would ACTUALLY NEED MY HELP, and thus, would be grateful for it, whether they express that gratitude, or not. As it turns out, I'm not able to adopt, because I'm not able-bodied. But, I'll stand as a supporter of adoption! Especially the older and hard-to-place kids! They need love, too! And too often, they don't get it. Although, I was never so shocked as to find out the reason they don't get it is not "They're old and already formed their own personality, so I can't mold them the way I want them to be," or even "They're not CUTE, like babies," but because "It's the high moral ground to leave the older ones to suffer, and only take the cute babies that you can mold the way you want them to be!" Many women do this, as did Jane Austen. JK also used her initials rather than her full name for the Potter series so that little boys wouldn't shy away from the series thinking it was written for girls. On the opposite spectrum, there are also a number of men who write under a female pen name, such as the author/ghost writer of Nancy Drew or Ben Franklin as Mrs. Silence Dogood. It's usually done to reach a farther audience, whether that's to make money or to spread a message. Point is, there are plenty of reasons to hate JK, but writing under a male pen name is not one of them.

Ms. Pierce is amazing! She is the best, and she is a wonderfully inclusive author! I don’t know what I would have done without those books :)

Tamora Pierce! I'm rereading one of her series right now, and I was so happy to see her name come up in that list! Not only is she a female author, she writes female main characters whose story isn't primarily romance, and so much more. I especially love Circle of Magic, which includes: - Not just lesbians, but adult lesbians who get to be happy together, which isn't in media often enough - Male-female friendships that don't turn romantic - A man who is serious about his personal responsibility to have safe sex - One of the main characters grows up without ever being romantically involved, and one is a woman who falls in love with a woman (if I remember right) Also, the magic system includes thread-, dance-, cooking-, gardening/plant-, and forge-based magics, which I think is really neat.

-Okay, but the 'adult lesbians' are actually one lesbian and one CANONICALLY BISEXUAL woman. In a relationship that includes ethical non-monogamy (Rosethorn in Battle Magic, third book in Circle Reforged, the third series of the Circle of Magic) -I was at a panel once where they were talking about how menstruations never comes up in books other than as a mark that someone is now able to be married. Myself and several other people raised our hands. One person was called on and cited Tamora Pierce. Myself and everyone else lowered our hands because that was the one example we all had. -In the Tortall books there is a woman who has multiple sexual partners without it being a bad thing (Song of the Lioness) and a woman who has a brief romance but don't actually end up with anyone and this is not a problem. (Protector of the Small). -I personally love the Protector of the Small quartet (Kel's books) because the theme is pretty much 'Kel will not stand for your bullying bs'

Related to comments on 16:48: My wife used to be really extroverted when she was young, but was constantly told to "stop talking" and to "let others speak" so often that she became traumatized by the constant immediate dismissal and developed a communication disorder. We've been married for over 6 years and she still has a hard time asking for what she needs, let alone what she wants. She will go without because she was told that was the only way she should communicate/show her worth. We have been actively trying to combat this since we started dating and it's still a struggle. (And yes, she has gone/is going to therapy to help with her trauma.) So, please don't just ask tell extroverted people to stop talking. Take them aside (away from groups) and talk to them about their way of communication. Is it a need to interject into conversations (because they'll forget if they don't say it as son as they think about it/ADHD trait)? Is that the only way they know how to express themselves effectively? Are they overstimulated/overexcited? Do they need a hug &/or a calmer setting? Would a smaller group setting be preferred? Are they aware of the other people's mood/mental state? Etc. Someone who is constantly talking can be in as much need of reassurance/effective communication/low stimulation space as an introvert who is overwhelmed.
@er6730
@er6730 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's similar to my experience. I didn't even realize that I was extroverted until I was grown up, as all those qualities were so discouraged and I saw them as character defects. I don't understand the "introverts are an oppressed minority and we're fighting back" narrative I see on the internet. I mean, maybe it's like that in the United States, but not everywhere. Most of my friends are introverts, and I'm very aware that I must tone myself down so I'm not "too much". That whole thing of "the best part of making plans with friends is cancelling them at the last minute" is completely incomprehensible to me. When a friend can't make our coffee date (even if it's for a good reason, like her child's sick) I have to really try hard not to waste the rest of the day moping around because I'm just that disappointed. I like my friends, that's why they're my friends! I understand being relieved that a dental appointment was postponed, or bad weather making it impossible to go to work, but to imagine that someone feels that way about spending time with me, it would break my heart.

@cockathiel5319 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Not only was Phyllis the first African-American to publish a book of poetry, her work and life were very important for the cause of abolition. She was an enslaved black woman (girl, really, since her first published poem was written at the age of 13!) whose incredible talent helped her overcome the vicious racism and misogyny she faced in order to become an acclaimed poet before the United States even existed. Sadly, she still suffered terribly during her life due to racism and discrimination, and her true/original name is unknown, since Phyllis Wheatley is the name she was given at age 7 by her enslavers. It’s awful that she’s not talked about nearly as much as she should be.
