I have a studio with teleprompters... some clients do MUCH better with bullet points and others love the word for word scripts. But I find that both types of client need practice to get the flow down right. I can't tell you the number of video re-takes I've had to do because a client wasn't comfortable with presenting with one or the other styles.

I used to read from a script. Lately, I have been writing a full script, then editing it down to bullet points (which you mention at the end of the video). I've discovered that when I do this, I remember my original script pretty well. Something about boiling it down to bullet points cements the full script in my brain. But it comes across more naturally (I think) because I'm only referring the bullet points and not reading something word for word. Thanks for the great video!!

I love that! I think a big part of why we "forget our lines" is because we're so focused on each word that we forget the entire message. That is such a great way to keep the big idea top of mind. Thanks for sharing. - Julia

Great video, guys. I've been trying to figure this out. This helps. In my fitness and muscle niche, all the best bullet-point scripters have a history of giving lectures. They're university profs and whatnot. Think of guys like Andrew Huberman and Mike Israetel. In other niches, it seems like lawyers and stand-up comedians do well. It's these people who give speeches for a living. Seems like it takes many years of practice to get great at it. The only way I get takes I'm happy with is by fully scripting everything. If I find myself wanting to deviate from the script while recording, I change the script as much as I want, but I still have it written out. I have no idea if that's the best way to get better at being a natural presenter. My videos definitely seem scripted. I worry it feels fake, even though I wrote the script. I tried a teleprompter but hated how it came out. I memorize the script, chunk by chunk, going through it in 20-45 second pieces. It's so much harder than it seems. I have no idea how much effort went into KZbin videos before I started making them. The bright side is that having a good script makes it easy to turn a video into an article afterwards.

I finally recorded a video this weekend that is unscripted and done only with bullet points and I like the product so much more because it was much more natural feeling. The editing took me no time at all, I left some speaking mistakes in there just as I would have them if I was talking to someone in person and I think if people like it, it may be my new normal. I watch it back and I’m like, oh that’s me, instead of thinking I look and sound awkward and not myself. It’s much easier, that’s for sure.

For this year I am enjoying scripting my text long hand, this allows me to scrawl informally the story. When I type it I get too exact and long winded. While scripting the long hand version I am organizing photos to go with the story, choosing a full screen photo every few minutes or so of speech so that I can do a jump cut behind the photo. When filming my video, I read the portion between the two jump cuts so that I am fresh on what I want to say and then make bullets that correspond to the photos I will be showcasing. I can glance at the bullets and ad lib from there. At the next full screen photo I do the same for the next segment. I'm still pretty new at youtube and this is seriously helping me be comfortable in front of the camera while still hitting my points.

I never formally defined my process, but I use a combination. Since most of my vids are "let's play", regular gameplay footage is just "stream of consciousness". When I make a video out of it, though, I almost always use bullet points, and I script the bits that *absolutely must be perfect*. Even on the rare occasion that I fully plan a video from the start, I do a combination of bullets, "sneaky scripting", and scripting. For me, a structured set of bullets with minimal word-for-word scripting works best.

I was scripting out my videos to start with but noticed two things that you touch on. 1) it wasn’t natural 2) I kept forgetting the script so I’d have to do multiple takes which made editing a nightmare. Switched to bullet points in my most recent video and even my mother, in the most non critical way possible, let me know how much more smooth and natural it sounded.

If I do fully scripted 10 minute script, I go through a rough quick draft by pencil in a journal (2 to 3 pages), sometimes as bullets or sentence fragments (a mind dump of flow of words as they come to me) and then a rewrite on laptop in Word, to make full sentences and sound more conversational, then break up long sentences, plus use Grammarly as a final draft step. This I call a 3 step process to polish script. (sounds a bit similar to your Sneaky Script method except I don't do speech to text software). Next I would do a full "out loud" read through of the script and make some changes to awkward sentences and phrases to sound more natural, as reading a script and speaking it out loud can be different. The practice also helps before doing the final delivery to camera with teleprompter. However, I do need to do more unscripted versions as well to get better at it and work from outlines and partly scripted. The more practice should make it better. Thanks for your video to explain the many options!

I use a little bit of both. Going in, I have a fully scripted video because I started using puppets in mine. So, they'll make a comment about something I'm talking about, I'll reply, and that goes on through the whole video. So, the puppet's lines never change. They are what I write in the script. But, sometimes, my lines change. To make sure their parts make sense, if I go off script, I'll almost make sure, I say my answer to them, or what they comment on, is always what I wrote. So a few lines are word for word. I give myself freedom with the rest.

Most KZbin channels won't last, however life will take them into environments where they find success managing people and speaking to groups, possibly even very large groups. Your ideas carry over well to organizing for public presentations. tHanks for a great video

I literally got an audio book on just that - giving public presentations. I wanted to get better at the actual speaking/delivery on KZbin, but every help video or book I've found focuses on every other topic, except for to improve the speaking/presentation/delivery. Although standing up Infront of a crowd was mentioned repeatedly, it was easy enough to change that to "pressing record/live stream". There were surprisingly few suggested recommendations that couldn't be carried across, for example seeing people shuffling in their seats, checking they're watches etc. I found the advice very helpful, I made several notes, and an gradually trying to work them into future videos. One thing I heard, is once you lost someone in a presentation, you almost never get them back, and I'm thinking how similar that is to KZbin and people clicking off

@@CameTointeresting point of how if someone is lost in a live presentation and how that compares to the instant guillotine of KZbin when people just go to another video. I used to wish they would just hold on while I struggled to make my point then I realized that many people don't really intend to watch the videos. They visit and stay long enough for their view to be counted then continue to another video. I keep trying to make the video not have slow spots by speaking a touch faster and by not talking as much. In the end,one day I believe there will be some people who want to see the whole video. Our compromise is out there somewhere...I'll find it if I can make a better video.
@CameTo

@@Dancing_Alone_wRentals there are people who want to watch the full length video. I found by creating in a more or less consistent style, eventually people found me, who like the way I come across in the video. like you, I prefer a longer and more sedated style, that allows for extra detail at the expense of speed. I get fewer views overall, but those who like what they say, are always the first to leave a comment, and likes in the first minute or so of setting the video live. I like to think these people would be my friend if they knew me from down the road, and the only reason they're watching my channel instead of the other way round, is because we decided to do different things. I have 4 little channels, 3 that i got monetised last year, 1 from 2022, and the 3 from last year are mostly unedited longer form content, so it's absolutely possible. I'm not really into editing, I prefer creating content, each video typically makes £5-£50 so it's nowhere near enough to pay editors to try and chop things down, and frankly I don't put enough time into it all to try arranging it, even if it did. My goal is gradually build things up

Hi guys!! very nice video :) I agree that bullet points are the best for speaking to flow without so much pressure. And I also liked what Nathan said that at the end of the day there are no rules and the ideal is for everyone to find their own way according to who they are. I want to ask you a question. I also watch all the videos on Income School. In fact, I'm already writing blog posts based on topical querys. Do you think it's viable to use the same post as a script for the video on KZbin? And if so, would I have to validate the keyword focused on KZbin or can I use the same one that I chose based on the Google search analysis? Thank you very much and keep up the good work, I love listening to you. German

I use the fully scripted method, but it still takes work to make yourself sound natural. When using a teleprompter, I had to learn to look ahead, and read slightly below my eyeline, so that I could keep my eyes on the camera even as I read. I also had to focus on pushing emotion into my voice, allowing myself to smile and laugh, and otherwise show a passionate, but casual, manner, despite actually reading a script. You can even add jokes, questions, laughter, or reactions TO the script, so that it comes across as natural.

Wow you kinda hit the nail on the head why I went entirely the other way. I know I ramble a bit too much for not scripting, and I'm sure the hurts my videos overall, but doing very small channels very part time (2000-5000 subs each) there's no way I can put much time into writing scripts, or I'd never has as much time as I'd like. I genuinely enjoy freestyling, but as expectations continue to rise, at some point I may need to consider taking my setup to the next level. May I ask what you use to teleprompter, and is it easy to use? Is it like reading a text file that moves along as you speak or am I ways off the mark here? Many thanks

Increasing play speed helps a lot with teaching channels that DRAG out their thoughts. Teaching channels drag out their info to get 8 to 10 minute videos but all that FLUFF is so boring. And wow, ending the video mid-sentence is funny once or twice and might even prompt some people to comment on the absurdity of it, but I think many of your viewers might feel that you're trying to trigger them too much and that you don't really appreciate their time. This channel needs to look at caring more for their viewers by making videos with less fluff. It's too obvious that the info is STRETCHED out to get 8 minutes for mid-roll ads. Imagine someone is talking to you and then they just stop and walk away, or they just end a call mid-sentence...... That doesn't seem to be adding any value for the viewer.
