It was initially a passion project inspired by a plane conversation thirty years ago between Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad wondering what would happen if Seven Samurai and Star Wars were combined. The idea was initially pitched to Lucasfilm as an R rated Star Wars spinoff, but rejected. After years of on and off development, (ultimately spurred on by Lockdown) he ended up pitching it to Netflix to try and be a competitor, with an R rated cut and spin offs in the pipeline. So less AI and more people trying to compete with Star Wars by putting their own spin on it.

@@nate.infinity lol, you're not wrong... but there's a place for his type of movies when done well, like 300 and Watchmen. Those are genuinely fun and enjoyable movies. I think it's possible he could direct stuff like that and be very successful again. The problem is he keeps trying to touch a pen and getting involved with the scripts. There seems to be a very clear pattern of the more involved he is with the story/script, the worse the movie ends up being. On a completely different note, I'm blown away by how delusional and insane his fans are. I'm shocked at how hard they are defending this film and some of the wild shit they're using as a defense. Someone legit told me... "I'm not sure why you're hating it so much, his daughter died, give him a break." They cite movies from over a decade ago as proof that he's still a good director. They say the Snyder cut "saved Justice League", which is crazy because all that cut did was turn a bad movie into a mid one, while costing the studio another 70 million to make. I simply don't understand why they defend him so hard.

I loved it when the guy who owns the slave/prince says he'll let him go if he can tame the griffin that he also owns. It makes no sense for him to do it and he could have done it any time he wanted, but because the protagonist girl showed up he'll do it now so he can tack on an agreement that she'll be his slave if the slave/prince fails... an agreement that he could never have enforced anyway... best movie ever.
@gamedude40710 ай бұрын
And then the slaveowner fucking dies. It felt like a boy telling me a "cool dream" he had you're just like "wow, cool," nodding In response. Probably one of the most mindless parts of the movie. And then the guy they freed contributes nothing the rest of the movie.
@TaramiBedona6 ай бұрын
The way that scene should have gone is that the protagonists should have gone on a side quest together to capture a rare and valuable creature that the slave owner wanted. In return he would release the dude from his debt. It would give the protagnists time to bond, the dude to show his skills by taming the wild creature and the farmers a chance to prove to him that they're worth helping. The pilot would refuse and just hang back at the compound while they're off risking their lives, hinting at his questionable loyality by showing it rather than telling us. Also, the slave owner would live, because fundamentally he's a business man and he honors business agreements. Skeevy and greedy, yes, but not cartoonishly evil.

I totally feel some of the Star Wars writing but honestly my first thought comparison wise was Warhammer 40k -Fascist human empire that is literally called "The Imperium" -Human sect obsessed with technology and augmenting themselves with it literally called "The Mechanicum" -Human leaders name is literally Belisarus (Belisarus Cawl being the leader of The Mechanichum in 40k) -The Ecclesiarchy within this human empire is and the way they act, literally the same feeling as the Inquisition from 40k. Rebel Moon even has these weird priest dudes (who literally seem to do nothing the entire movie) in all red who further reinforce that vibe. And that's just what I remember. To be honest I watched it right as it came out and barely remember much outside the basic premise of the story and the similarities I noticed. The movie was pretty unmemorable so I'm honestly even struggling to remember all the characters names. There could be a lot of other blatant similarities I totally missed. Kinda felt like they pulled a lot of stuff out of 40k. The look of the imperial officers, those medics at the end resemble technomancers or tech priests, the wording of things like the academy militarum. I dont think it's the worst thing I've seen, definitely far from the best (still better than the sequels iykyk). The film pulled a lot of inspiration out of lots of other media seemingly, not just star wars. But I think the biggest thing I hate is that the movie was advertised essentially to be star wars but with sex, gore and cursing. This all felt very PG13 to me when I think it could've benefited from being the rated R experience they were selling to people. Apparently the rated R cut will be coming later but I think it's hilarious that zack deliberately chose to make this version the first impression rather than the rated R cut. It's a bad look and the real reason this film should be criticized. They specifically watered down this version so people would be drawn to the rated R cut in the future. It's like selling a DLC of a movie. Absolutely hilarious.

They thought that she, and her intro scene were generic, and that shes "angry/brooding", when thats exactly the opposite of what she stood for. They kept talking about the general, but they also said many times how he was disgraced, and he obviously didn't even wanna command people anymore. To have him just do a 180 and instantly return to his old self would have just garnered even more criticism from people who couldn't follow the movie 😂 I think the main issue is that you can't rely on the average person to have an imagination anymore. They'll obviously show how talented he is in the 2nd movie. The movie execution wasn't great at all, but I think people's hate for Zack Snyder is really influencing the perception.

@@in_vas_por8810I don’t think you can excuse them not showing the general’s abilities with people’s reaction to the swordswoman’s scenes. None of the secondary characters got any development so whatever little scenes they could’ve had would’ve been helpful.

This is why I stopped watching after 8 minutes. Kora supposedly struggles to integrate into this society because of her troubled past. Okay. WHAT past exactly? Throw in some flashbacks like in Mad Max Fury Road or something.

I feel like Snyder kinda thought that after so many people clamoured over his cut of Justice League, anything he touched next would be gold dust, and it just turned out to be pocket lint. It’s weird to say this but I feel like this concept would have worked better as a video game like Baldur’s Gate or something where you have an extended period of time to meet the larger cast and you can actually see them interact with each other. I enjoy games like Dragon Age or Fire Emblem where you actually see your choices in the story or how well characters work together in battle has a consequence on their chemistry for that very reason this movie kinda seemed to fail.
@llamaczech11 ай бұрын
Nonono, you see it's "part one." That gives him license to have shit character development and a plot where nothing happens. Because if you criticise it, you just don't understand you need more parts. You can't handle slow burns. /s

@@llamaczech yeah I tried that dose of copium with Man of Steel, it didn't work. Did they clamor for Justice League? It seemed like the consensus was "at least it was better than the cut to ribbons movie made by the director everyone hates now"
@llamaczech11 ай бұрын
@@bigbearkat2010 I feel for you. I do find it weird that people even suggest that as why Man of Steel and Justice Leage had problems, because Snyder didn't actually have anything to do with the writing process. If he was planning out where the story was going and just had someone doing the screenwriting for him, he'd have a "story by" credit. Which he doesn't.

@@llamaczechwell he has a screenwriting credit for Rebel Moon and the reviews are even worse than those so maybe there was a reason for that.

Snyder needs to provide a world to a producer/writer that can actually structure a story properly and shoot scenes in an interesting and not slow-mo way. His vision and visuals are always good, he just needs somebody to make stories out of them.
@llamaczech11 ай бұрын
No, no they're not. His "vision and visuals" are always "hey, look, this shot is a recreation of this comic panel. Get it? GET IT? Hold up, let me slow it even more until you get what I'm trying to make here" or it's upped contrast until everything looks like its on an early badly calibrated flatscreen TV.

@bigbearkat201011 ай бұрын
Frankly, that sounds like a thankless job. Anything that goes well even adjacently from Snyder has his fanboys giving him all the credit for it, they still like to pretend WW and Aquaman were his grand vision.
@llamaczech11 ай бұрын
@@bigbearkat2010 well, it's not like Snyder does anything to quash that idea. He talks about how this was his vision and where he wanted to go with it etc. in panels and interviews. You know, like Man of Steel and BvS weren't projects he was brought onto later. He doesn't even have a "story" credit, which you think he would if he's even just making suggestions for where the story will go.

I was skimming through this movie to find the bits he mentioned so I could laugh at the source. as I was going though I discovered that this movie shows the main villain casually having wild kinky sex with a tentacle monster half way through. why? idk. but i feel like that sums this movie up pretty well.

I liked the part when it turned into How to Train Your Dragon for five minutes and then it never pays off that plot-point in the final battle and the character who was in that scene does nothing but run around shirtless. Also it was nice of Anthony Hopkins to read the Star Wars title crawl as narration so Snyder could avoid being sued.
