Repairing rotted sub-floor In the bathroom is our task for today. When tile is improperly installed without the correct underlayment it can create deflection. When this happens, it can cause the grout to crack and eventually the tile to crack. Eventually water finds a home in the crack and starts breeding mold. If you have this going on, it is time to tear it out. Join me on my journey to replacing rotted subfloor in this bathroom.

@YOUFLOOR

@Sooperdooper74 I would estimate for a room this size you could get most of the materials for around $800.00, then you could do it yourself. If you had it done by someone. Probably around $2,500.00 to $3,000.00. About a week's worth of work may be a little more depending on how much time is dedicated to it. Hope that helps. Thanks for the question

I’m in process of doing this to. No support for the toilet, so it flexed, leaked, rotted the subfloor, and caused mold. We removed the toilet, the tile, the luan and will be removing a 2x3 ft section of subfloor and replacing it with plywood. We will also be installing more cross bracing between the floor joists. House was built in 1988 , and the joists span 32 feet! This job is way worse than what i am doing though! Kudos to this guy!

Are there no building standards in the USA? I have now done several houses with rot around the toilet and in every case the house was designed poorly with too much flex in the floor. Plus, the wood is never pre-treated for resistance to rot, nor is the wood, membrane sealed. What I end up doing, for smaller jobs, is reinforcing the joists around the toilet (in particular) and adding cross-joists for support in critical areas. I also pre-treat the wood to be rot and water resistant, which I repeat after installation. In critical areas I use 3/4 inch hardwood. It seems to me fundamentally wrong that builder are allowed to get away with this kind of practice.

Depends when the house is built. Doesn’t matter what “standards” start to get implemented houses prior to that won’t adhere to those standards. That’s where renovations come into play

Build and repair is VERY expensive so people often opt for unlicensed "handyman" types that are much cheaper than competent professionals. This work is typically done by illegal aliens from Mexico or South America that may work on construction sites etc and do this sort of thing on the side. They cut a lot of corners because it makes jobs go faster and uses less materials.

@@GalacticEggNot withstanding your observation is no doubt correct, the overall standard of construction in Arizona nearly beggars belief. I am currently replacing a shower which was 'as installed by the builder'. The one-piece shower lacked any mortar support and instead relied on two, half inch thick, planks of wood embedded in the fiberglass pan. Unfortunately these pieces of wood were not contiguous because of the need for the shower to slope towards the drain. Anyhow, after 15 years the wood (and the fiberglass) gave up and collapsed. After stripping out the old shower I found the plumbing consisted of a moen rough in which was floating in mid air, secured only by two straps around hot/cold PEX piping and the copper sweat joint leading up to the shower head. The PEX pipes (and also one going to the bath) were wound around studs so they impinged on the shower walls. To proceed I had to disconnect these pipes, drill holes through the studs, reinforce the studs (for other reasons) and then reconnect them. All because the original builder's plumber was a lazy piece of c**p. Sadly, this is all too common (aalong with numerous code violations that required my intervention). The electrics were no better and the installation of the (original) HVAC was a disgrace. This is typical of so-called professionals in Arizona. They are a joke.

@@davidgapp1457 This is what you get when laborers build a house instead of skilled carpenters and plumbers. Everyone wants it cheap cheap cheap, until you have to repair all of the damage from their poor workmanship and low quality materials.
@davidgapp1457
@davidgapp1457 24 күн бұрын
@@davidparker9676 I completely agree with you. I would be willing to pay extra for quality workmanship. In the end I guess the only solution is to design and build your own house, and if I'd had time I would've done so. What is annoying is that builder do not give you the option of having premium solutions and superior workmen onsite. I suspect they don't want your neighbors to become aware of just how poorly their own houses are constructed. Seriously! For instance, bringing the hvac ducting inside the cooled space. Either way, the builders just don't give a damn and they were 100% intransigent.

I just pulled out a bathroom floor that was 30+ years old which had 6" ceramic tile glued right on top of linoleum sheet flooring and 3/4" subfloor. The only tile I found to be cracked was under the toilet. Both toilet and bathtub drain had leaked for years rotting out sections of subfloor but the tile and grout held up. Crazy...

Hard work just ripped out our main bathroom & tub combo down to the floor joists. I had to 5/8 triple plywood the subfloor for a slight pitch 14" to the stack. We had to use self-level plus the tub area no ceiling access below only the closet access door by the faucet. Our joists were running front to back the existing 1' 1/4" (1964 Bi-level) copper drain was capped off & previous homeowner modified a new drain 1' 1/2" PVC through the ceiling rerouted down to another exist copper discharge pipe. I had no option but to use that 1' 1/2" PVC drain.

Thanks for sharing this, it's informative as I face a potentially rotted subfloor. I'm not experienced at this, so take my questions as truly curious ones, right? At 9:41, is it ideal to have to essentially force in the replacement subfloor? I wonder about allowing room for expansion and avoiding buckling if it swells. Similar thought about 11:46, would it be better to cut the new pieces a hair smaller to allow for expansion? Trim will cover the gaps against the cabinet, flooring will cover the seams near the toilet pipe. Good work, the results are terrific! You do good work!

It was for parts only. Would probably run $800 for labour's. 2 days. (Depending on the situation) so around $1,200 to $1,500 for the whole thing. Hope that helps. Thanks for the question

Good job! My small 5’x7’ bathroom needs the entire subfloor replaced and some joist sistering. Tub is 4.5’x2.5’ cast iron. Think it can be removed without having to break it up? Just me doing the job. If it does need to be broken up how would you suggest doing it?

@tmise50 Maybe. If you can turn it sideways, it may fit. A lot of bathroom openings are 28 to 30 inches, so if you took the door off the hinges, you might get lucky. Thanks for the question, and good luck with your project

I can almost guarantee the floor is rotten under the tub and the sink

Almost.... good thing I went under the house and poked all around to ensure I removed all the rot. Thanks for the comment

You just left it the same, with no extra support! Now it will do the same damn thing, and the tiles will break as well. You should have added 2x6 between the joints for more support !

No extrat support needed. It's lvp. Not tile. Thanks for the comment

I would gut that " to the studs" to be safe.

If lumber wasn't so high at the time, I might have considered it. But I check under the house and in the walls. I think I got it all. Thanks for the comment

@@YOUFLOOR I did a similar remodel earlier this year. Wasn't as much damage but a little water causes the 3/4 inch plywood to de-laminate. Replaced the worst part then oil base primed the subfloor. I do love LVP. Will never tile another floor. LOL.

I would prefer Cement backerboard for subfloor.

For LVP? Sounds like a waste of money. But we all have our preferences. Thanks for the comment

Don't blame owners weight. A poor leveling job by contractor.
