The problem is that Sony's leadership doesn't seem to care for older games unless they're remastering/remaking them or selling them on their store. For what it's worth Microsoft has been pro backwards compatibility and preservation, a lot more than Sony and especially Nintendo and that's commendable. I've collected hundreds of games over the many years I've been a gamer and do play my older games sometimes on consoles that aren't supported anymore. Knowing that I wont be able to do that with my PS3/PS4 in the future is a shame really. Well I'm going to mod them at some point like I've done many of my consoles but some people may not want to do that but at least there's a solution because where there's a will there's a way.

This is a big issue... Basically this consoles (PS3, PS4 and apparently the PS5) were all designed to make your entire library of games, physical and digital useless in the future. It means that the software you own and you paid for is in jeopardy and you may not have acess to it due to this. Sony really needs to adress this, give us some answers and a solution. I don't know the situation in America, but here in the UK, as well as Europe and Australia, Sony ABSOLUTELY can face legal action. We have laws that protect us, the customers, from these types of predatory, shady business practices, and their User Agreement would hold little weight against them. Let me put it this way. Imagine you're being interviewed for a new job, and your boss has you sign a contract. The contract states your boss has every right to behead you in his basement, should he be displeased with your performance. You're probably raising an eyebrow at this point, and so would I. Murder is still murder, and his contract doesn't shield him from his country's laws. If Sony would be allowed to get away with their DRM scam, then so would this hypothetical employer. Now that we've established how Sony's precious User Agreement (basically a mindless Sony consumer's go-to excuse to defend their corporate slavers) doesn't automatically shut down this conversation, we can start having conversations about how Sony's been selling their PlayStation games from the PS3 digital games onwards under false pretences. How they're not addressing basic features of their products that people bought them for, that were falsely advertised. And last, but certainly not leased, how they lied to the worldwide public about the PS4 being DRM-free. If an offline game, be it physical or digital, is 100% reliant on an internet connection and access to PlayStation servers after it has already been bought and installed into the console, in order to just play it, then it has fucking DRM. This has never been an issue with Nintendo, as I can play all my bought and downloaded WiiWare, DSiWare, 3DS and Virtual Console games, some of which are on consoles that no longer have any online servers. My Wii U doesn't have this issue, as far as I've tested. And the Switch doesn't have this universally, just on a case-by-case basis (like Crapcom and Hacktivision games). It would be in Sony's best interest not to let this continue. They already drew enough negative ire recently, and this is not doing them any favours either. More people are learning about this issue, and it will not go away as long as we all continue to stand our ground. When you buy a game, it should be yours to enjoy for as long as the console still works, even years after the servers shut down. Not all of us have a lawyer on-hand to sit down with us and translate a game company's intentionally vague, wishy-washy User Agreement every time we return home after buying a physical game, or waiting for our digital game to install, only to then realise what we're in for and have to go out of our way to return the game or ask for a refund. This sets a dangerous precedent for the entire rest of the games industry, and if we don't force change from Sony, we're explicitally telling every other platform-manufacturer that they can walk all over us as much as they want. There's no excuse for this ridiculous situation.

Replacing the battery isn't the problem, that's still relatively easy. It's after replacing the battery where the problems start. You can't access ANY game, digital or physical until your console connects to the internet at least once. If there's no PSN/Internet connection, you have a brick of a console. And servers for anything will never stay up forever.

@@AleksLazar Maybe, but the simple fact is that playing any game should not be tied to an internal battery which has a guaranteed, if unspecified expiration date. They could very easily disable it via a software update . If they're that worried about people cheating with trophies then they could simply disable the unlocking of trophies when playing offline. I would have no problem with trophies being online only as they need to be synced anyway. I'd much rather my games worked no matter what.

My PS3 is still working fine though.... And there is no doubt phased out old hardware could/should be supported by homebrew if they want so. But most users are moving on and buying new hardware, I doubt even 20% of old consoles will survive. 40 Million SNES were sold, the majority was abandoned and guess the number of working units in 2021? The sad thing is I've been yelling about stuff like this since people started putting harddrives in consoles and people said I was worried for nothing just like the guy in that video. *ALL* the companies, not _just_ Sony, inevitably want to take away consumer rights, remove the ability for you to claim you own something, and they do that by getting the games out of your hands and into these glorified rental systems that people think are the future. MS trying to go all digital was just one aspect of it, it wasn't for gamer convenience it was so they could control whether or not you get to play the game at their own whim. Sony picked up on gamer discontent and the PS4 whipped them partly because of it, but then they just tried to trick people into it slowly. People say "Physical for life," not because they want to feel superior (sure some of them might feel that way,) but because they know they have the code on a disc that they can still access either though a hacked system, or an emulator later on even if rom sites get nuked. It might take a while, but as long as you have that PS3/PS4/PS5 disc there's a chance you can still play the game you put money out for, can't say that for sure about a harddrive game you got from a digital storefront. Honestly, it shouldn't take all this C bomb stuff to understand, all it takes is one day without internet, not even the PSN or XBL servers going down, just a storm or something and you can't play games because people want to rely on the internet for everything. A single denial of access should be too many. The internet's not that reliable and that hasn't improved in the last 15 years. Heck PC solution isn't perfect either, just a couple of weeks ago I couldn't play a single player STEAM game on PC because FIOS had a broken cable just randomly somewhere in the neighborhood. You know what did work? Offline retro consoles and (gasp) emulators. I don't see Nintendo being the savior either because they're just slow at understanding what the internet is in general and how to used it to screw consumers.

I don't believe for a second that this is something Sony didn't know about or is accidental in nature. The EULA has been constructed in such a way so that they're not responsible for allowing you to play your games for as long as you have access to the hardware that you purchased. If you think about it from a business perspective it makes sense. You want to play your Playstation games you've purchased? Than keep buying the new Playstation when it comes out. After all it's what the die hard fanboys say. The PS5 is PS4 compatible not realizing that there shouldn't be a ticking time bomb to your console or your library just because there's a new console in the market. The fact that there's people out there that call them selves gamers actually defending this practice is disturbing and shows just how stupid it is to be a fanboy. Don't be a fanboy of any brand but stick with the consumer and demand they don't screw you over.

I was assisting Forest testing this and at the time I decided to test my own theory on my ps4, see how fast I could swap out a 'working' cmos batter (not even a dead one) with another (or simply taking out the good one and putting it back in). 2 seconds. That alone was still enough time without a working cmos battery installed to cause the cbomb issue. It's pretty crazy stuff.

I did manage to replace the replace the cmos battery in my PS3 and have begun redownloading all the digital games I had but it does make me wonder if I should just mod my PS3, after the stores close, just so I keep my digital purchases safe and secure... if that is even possible. Also this video does make me ponder if the other systems have cmos battery issues too.

I replaced my battery and thermal paste a few days ago too but that's not the issue is it? Even after replacing the battery your console has to verify the date and time via the internet at least once. Physical games are safe on PS3 regardless but digital ones aren't. On PS4 the situation is even worse because even if you replaced a dead CMOS battery, if in 15 years they shut off access to PSN then you can't play anything, not even a physical disc. This needs to start trending so Sony are forced to respond and release a final firmware for the PS3 to prevent it and eventually the PS4 too so the consoles aren't worthless bricks in the future.

Now would be excellent time for Microsoft to make a parody video about how they handle digital games. This PS4 CMOS problem is so wrong. I bought the PS4 the first day because SONY promised us no need to connect the system to the internet if we where to play offline. I have almost 70 PS4 GAMES and never-- NEVER conected my PS4 to the internet (not even by mistake). I discovered all PS4 games includes the needed update to play them.. AND NOW, the PS4 CBOMB situation makes me furious.. I´m not buying the PS5, I´m going to stick with my switch and perhaps a XBOX SERIES X in the near future.

Good video, I have discovered that I have a dead CBOMB on my PS3 and it's not the only problem my PS3 has, the other one is broken some disc reading part (I don't know what, but it can't play disc games), so I have PS3 digital only and if the PS Network stops working I would have basically useless piece of hardware and the thing about I am most scared of, are games like Gran Turismo 5, because Sony won't remaster or release them on new consoles, probably because of the licenses, but still I love them and I played them a lot and they were part of my childhood.

@@toypop96 I think so too. Like a perpetual cycle of having to buy the newest console to keep something from the older one. That is unless Sony creates something similar to Microsoft's Game Pass and I wouldn't be surprised if they are. That said, the days of having a game you can buy second hand to sell is becoming murkier and more gray. Games aren't full when bought now since it's based around a service model. Patches, being in sync with Sony's servers to authenticate useless trophies and time. I always thought trophies were useless and now they've inadvertently (maybe) caused a problem for the new generation of games.

We're more concerned with the ability to play something we want at will. It's still up in the air if DLC will be available at any point in time in the future. Take Asura's Wrath for example. Produced by Capcom for PS3 and Xbox 360. Unless that game gets re-released, you may never get the full experience from the DLC. All we're left with is players who create video content for others to enjoy from a spectating view.

The xbox 360 doesn't care if the time is wrong when you get achievements, as long as the game was downloaded on that system by the account in use it will allow access. I would assume that the xbox one is much the same.
