I did the pay by hour for $15 + TIPS the other day and got a grouped order w 4 deliveries that were in 4 different cities/towns... 2 were from a liquor store and 2 were Sephora, after delivering all 4 I went to check my pay for the orders individually and was shocked to see next to the 2 Sephora orders it said ineligible with a circle around an exclamation point, if you click on that it said something along the line of the merchant does not allow the customer to tip! Tl;dr did pay by hr, got 4 jobs lumped together all in different towns. After delivering all 4 I was told 2 were ineligible for tips because the merchant doesn't allow the customer.

Been a top dasher for at least 6 months now, I avoid certain areas when dashing for sure. I don't even go down the street with the majority of the fast food places here. Also, if you go near the fast food strip you get sucked into delivering to the university campus, and it's awful. I've found if I stay near the center of downtown or near the nice restaurants, I make way better money. Also pizza, I make pretty good money on pizza sometimes. My town is split up into a few different sections, sometimes I just stay on my side of town and do well, it often just depends if it's busy enough. Traffic and parking are major issues here as well and that's something I think about when I go out. Do I want to go downtown at 5 pm and get stuck doing 1 or 2 deliveries an hour, probably not if I can stay on my side of town and make 3-4 deliveries an hour. Also with the shopping orders I prefer 7 or less, I just hate shopping, but if it pays well, I'll do it. I also don't mind the bulk grocery orders that's just a pick up, those pay pretty well sometimes. Oh, and the food bank deliveries, those always pay well here, I usually make like 40+ an hour when I get those.

Some shop and delivery customers are really entitled breed, you carry groceries up several flights of steps to their doorstep but that's not enough. You have to carry it inside their home, for everybody's safety, never enter a stranger's home. You are vulnerable for attacks from all directions and rude awakening if enter a stranger's home. You get the ones that badmouth you and insults you verbally because you refused to take groceries straight into house. Leave at their doorstep, your safety is more important don't let anyone make you feel awful. Taking people 's delivery into the customer's dwelling is not part of the job description. Don't feel obligated to do so.

When accepting low pay, consider the lost opportunity cost. Also at some point you have to factor in $$/hr. If you take a $3.75 order and it takes you 20 minutes, you are making 11.25/hr. (actually less because of lag time between orders)

Shop and deliver is generally pretty good. Depending obviously. You know what stores to avoid (like Aldi, they don't give you bags for instance). But my strategy with them is keep my completion rating high and when I accept a shop and deliver order, I'll look at whats on the order. If its something ridiculous (like 7 cases of 24pack of water going to the third floor of an apartment) I'll take myself off. Also it can be misleading. You can see 30 items and think oh crap but then you look at the order and 10 of those items are noodles for instance. But ya, I just look at whats on the order before 100 percent comitting to it.

Exception to the low dollar is Dunkin Donuts in the Northeast. Very common for it be $4-$5 and my “feel” is that you end up getting a stacked delivery when you accept, maybe 30-40% of the time during the week and a lot higher on the weekends. I have accepted a $4 1.5 mile and often walk out with 2-3 orders worth $12 for a total of 5 miles.

"Customers can't access restaurants too far away" I've seen DD orders in excess of 15 miles between restaurant and customer in my market which makes me think the radius may be market-specific or much larger than Mike thinks. Uber Eats definitely allows customers to order much further away and I've seen ridiculous 20 and 30 mile deliveries with it (always a big Nope from me). Wish I'd see DD alcohol deliveries, it's available in my market but I've never seen an order for alcohol with DD. I've done UE alcohol deliveries and they are usually good pay. Never heard of package returns or dashmart orders, must not be in my market.

It wastes my time because it's more efficient for me to verify and confirm the order on the way out of the store or back to my bike. Is there some epidemic of delivery people just taking the orders for themselves for lunch. Good way to get fired i'd think. Like dash mart makes more $ and less items. Single orders would take forever depending to reach a certain $ amount but make a quick $89 bucks in a hour or less worth it to me . Plus non profit will have holiday food delivery drop off for around $100 or so ( did a bread for the city order once ) but some address were hard to find and i did not like it but money was good. We've done instacart so we are able to watch item vs time and miles. We are in a small market, but one I think a lot of people like. There's a parking lot right close to everything, always cars sitting. We have a area that in some cases you have to go 10 plus miles but we make sure its worth it. Today was bad, we did two shop and delivery at a dollar general, literally less then a mile from drop. One was six items, one was twenty three, they paid good. Bill came to about $80 and it was an embarrassment for me that my red card declined numerous times. I contact support they say try as debit. Nothing works. I told them the total so they add funds to the card. Does not work at all. Like 30 min for me shop the items and then another 10min in the checkout lane trying to get the card to work. I usually take it if it’s 12 items or less and I know the store well I could possibly take 15 items if it’s close to $20 like $18 and the miles are short 3 miles or less more than that you waste to much time shopping and delivering the order that is not worth it.
