Steve Yzerman has some interesting choices to make this summer for the Detroit Red Wings.
Tune in as we discuss the ideal draft strategy for Hockeytown as they draft 15th overall and look to add to their core - who would be the best help for Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Alex DeBrincat, Simon Edvinsson, & Detroit's other key players? Is it best player available or a high end forward like Eiserman or Catton (3:25)?
Next, updates on the Toledo Walleye, Raymond, Lyon, & Augustine at the World Championships, and Nate Danielson with the Portland Winterhawks (22:30) before we get into our 2024 NHL Draft Prospect Profile on Cole Eiserman: goal-scoring dynamo from the USNTDP (25:45).
After that, NHL news including Keefe being fired, Shanahan staying, and what's next for Mitch Marner, the Stanley Cup Playoffs including Tkachuk vs. Pastrnak, Rangers dominating the Hurricanes, and McDavid's task against the Canucks (40:15), PLUS the Utah team names (1:00:45) & LOTS more before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (1:04:30) - enjoy!

I think Brandsegg-Nygård is the obvious pick for yzerman. Plays the game the way yzerman loves and has some offensive upside.

What I don't understand about the Utah Name debate is how in the hell is there not an option for THE UTAH RAPTORS. It could be dinosaur themed or bird of prey themed, but that literally would be so sick (Utah Raptor is the largest member of the Raptor family of Dinosaurs fyi)

I'm in complete agreement on taking a big swing in the draft. They've done well to build a good and deep corps of prospects but desperately need scorers. They should be willing to take a big swing for a home run, including trading up for a player.

Steve Yzerman was considered just an offense first player too when he was drafted and his first decade in the league. His game may have been more fleshed out than Cole Eiserman's, but it took him years to develop into an excellent two-way center under Scotty Bowman. He had to learn to put the team first, and his offensive production suffered greatly for it, but he won Cups so it was the right decision. Obviously Eiserman isn't the level of talent that Yzerman was, and Steve's compete was always very very high, he wanted the puck all the time. But his growth was in learning to pass the puck, and play without the puck. There's a chance Eiserman is able to develop those skills once he's in the NHL. I guess a big difference is that Yzerman is a natural center, and Eiserman is a winger so the opportunity and need to develop the rest of his game is different.

Much like the Vegas knights and the fortress; my pick for Utah was the Swarm so they can call the arena the hive. I think the marketing on word play is there lol. Also I'll agree I don't think Yzerman hasn't had the luxury of having a type as much as we can draw comparisons and similarities in his picks. Maybe this year he can be a little more loose with drafting less on positional need and more on pure raw talent now that we are starting to attract better free agents with better success.

I understand the passion of Brad but.. why you drafted ASP ? Parekh as a 3rd pairing D ? Or ASP ? No way then you keep trade asset for a Monster trade ? Maybe or not going into that direction would be full of uncertainty imo and Detroit need to secure his rebuild so no I'm not in love with that option to select Parekh or Buium if anyone of both slides so I guess going BPA best on biggest position need who's matching all Yzerman's boxes or almost all would be the best but who knows..

Brad Ken Holland tried to do exactly what you are saying and shooting for the fences for a high scoring winger, instead of drafting a sure nhl right shot defenseman which we desperately needed instead he went for that guy that was going to fill everyone's net with pucks named Zadina. How did that workout?
@europason2293
@europason2293 15 күн бұрын
The difference is that we are well into a rebuild now and are stocked with prospects at every position, many of whom are very close to being NHL-ready or already are. Now is the time to take a swing at a high upside forward that can score goals.
@user-rw9rs6di9n
@user-rw9rs6di9n 15 күн бұрын
They should have been taking more swings at high offensive upside guys so you could weather a miss with Zadina. Instead we were busy overdrafting Rasmussen who is not a game breaker. I still can’t fault the Zadina pick from a draft mindset. It was before the rules fully allowed for the Hughes type skating D players to be that successful. Zadina showed flashes playing with Vrana, but he couldn’t put it together. Think if we had him playing with more skill it could’ve gotten more out of him. One of many draft picks that didn’t develop well or produce. We had a poor record of developing high skill guys that weren’t otherworldly like Datsyuk and Zetterberg for a long time. Zadina not panning out could have been an indictment of our development staff that has since been replaced when Yzerman took over.

You mentioned the poor results thus far for draft picks after the first round. Could you do a deep dive on the scouting and player evaluation of future picks, and the roles of Chris Draper and the scouting staff. Do we have the best people putting our draft list together compared to other organizations?

Its hard to tell - too early still. But I am really surprised that Yzerman did not go get Al Murray - who was his draft guru in Tampa - when they got - guys like Braden Point in the 3rd round - of course Vasilevsky - the list goes on and on. I was surprised Yzerman did not bring him with when he came to Detroit - but now - he was demoted last year - by Brisebois - and I was really surprised that he stuck around Tampa - and more that Yzerman did not go get him for Detroit - I have been really surprised by that

Umm - when you are drafting 6 and a "consensus top 3 pick" is available - it would make me do a double take on why he hasn't been taken - because news flash - (he's not a consensus top 3 pick then ) Its easy to armchair QB that now but it looked like faulty logic at the time. Face it RedWings drafting got really bad once Jim Nill left. Sorry folks but he was the best GM and we let him walk out the door. Remember at the time how they were desperate for a center - (& still are ). Nill went to Dallas and within a couple weeks pulled off major trade for Tyler Seguin . Sorry I think he is probably the best GM in the league the past 10 years - take a look at some of his drafts - while picking much later than the red wings most of the time.

@wyattbarnes9641 8 күн бұрын
@@pjpredhomme7699 Agreed. Detroit would be in a much better position right now if Nill took over and Holland were shown the door in the early 2010’s. Happy to have Steve now but man, probably would have saved us going through those god awful years.

The most likely thing is that RW chooses BPA. Safe pick as no.15 still provides a good prospect. There is a possibility that RW chooses to trade down, if their guy is not there. For the first time in a long time. RW does not have a pick in the top 10 and does not have many picks in the later rounds of this year's draft. Here there is a possibility that RW chooses to create assets more than to dispose of assets e.i as a move as trade up will cost you. There are many defenders who are expected to go high, there are some wingers who could become available at no.15. Hope RW chooses a rugged winger with some size, IQ and some hands.

Going into the season no one thought they’d be top 10 in scoring. Who knows how long guys line Sprong, Kane, Fabbri, Perron will be around to provide offense. They’re loaded with defense prospects and the winger pipeline is completely barren.
@wyattbarnes9641
@wyattbarnes9641 15 күн бұрын
Carried by depth players with high shooting percentages that won’t be back or don’t have a future in Detroit. Can always use goal scorers/high end talent. Got lots of defense coming through the pipeline and 2 way centers have been emphasized in back to back first rounds.

Another factor in Toronto potentially trading Mitch Marner is the $7.25 million signing bonus owed on July 1st. Toronto likely keeps him past July 1st so they could get more value back because the acquiring team would only have to pay him $775,000 in actual salary in 2024-25. Anyone who thinks that the 15th overall pick could be part of a trade needs to let that idea go.

* Raymond was a defacto type, they were excited about a right handed RW being available. Draper even said so later. Draft wise Detroit needs WINGERS in their system with the graduation of Berggren, yet SY seems to be leaning to adding Dmen who are BPA who fall to them. The 2nd round in 2023 was a total mystery why SY passed on all the best available wingers available for the likes of Brady Cleveland who is a huge project with limited upside.
@pjpredhomme7699
@pjpredhomme7699 13 күн бұрын
they can't have enough centers with size and speed . They have Kasper and Danielson in the system but neither seem to have the type of talent that stands out enough to be considered roster players already. I am all for drafting as many Defensemen and centers as they can justify - Wingers are much more easy to find from all over - very very few are difference makers.

Marner to Detroit actually kinda makes sense. I normally wouldn't entertain the idea but you guys did so..... Marner is the Toronto kid, living his dream playing for his home town leafs, if he's forced out, why not go to the direct rival?? At this point revenge would be on marners mind. It's a great hockey market without the noise of Toronto and he'd still be very close to home.

Maybe being a bit more selfish in terms of thinking shot first wouldn’t be a deal breaker. Sometimes, I find myself thinking that we don’t have as many guys looking to get dirty and get after finding their shot. Used to be my pet peeve with too many pass first guys on the team. Not seeing he is the fit, but we don’t lack playmakers.
@pjpredhomme7699
@pjpredhomme7699 13 күн бұрын
I am not sure what you mean by playmakers - but I can say 100% when they went into their slide that took them out of the playoffs - remember Larkin got hurt - and they had no puck transporters - so they had completely brutal zone entries - they looked lost. They eventually had to revert to only shoot ins - but it stuck out huge that they did not have natural puck carriers other than Larkin - especially one that can drive play - back defense off . Other than Larkin there isn't one.
@user-rw9rs6di9n
@user-rw9rs6di9n 13 күн бұрын
@@pjpredhomme7699 I am wanting a finisher. Hoping Danielson can be part of the transporters and Kasper/Veleno/Compher as well. I thought when Vrana played and was scoring that it added an element that we didn’t have. DeBrincat brings that too and Raymond really showed growth as a shooter this year. For awhile there, we had a team of folks trying to pass the puck into the net and perimeter players. Not sure Kane sticks around, but I think it makes sense to draft a power forward that has a good shot and is able to drive the center of the slot and make themselves available. Watching the playoffs, we need some of that to be able to round out the types of ways we can score. We seemed to shoot a high percentage which may be unsustainable in the future so adding to the weapons stash makes sense to me.
