BigFrogs4x4 I’ve got both ZR2 and Z71 The ZR2 is for work got pissedoff with the company buying ford and dodge pickups no mods just factory stuff and last less than 5000km before major repairs I’m almost at 13000km and so far it’s been oil and filter changes and I talk shit every day saying it’s only off-road truck here at a mine site and there always broke down. 🤣 I live in peace river Alberta Canada google earth and follow the river north you’ll see the white landscape on the right that’s my sandbox 😎👍 and they pay me to have fun with my truck

I've had my Zr2 2.8 for 2 months now..just hit 3k miles love it, you can't go wrong with both, for me though the ZR2 was the obvious choice,here in central Oregon we have everything from overlanding to extreme rock crawling to desert running. The Zr2 out of the box can do it all. Cast control arms, DSSV, and front locker all good... I lived 30 mims from the Rubicon back in the 90's..anyone who runs trails like those knows how expensive it is to add front lockers.. and how awesome it is to have. Coming from the jeep and tacoma world i can tell you it gets expensive adding or replacing to a stock suspension. Extra $3K for the Zr2 is a no brainer.. also most will buy a lighter trailer anyways... not too many gonna pull 7700 lbs with a mid-size.. I don't even town that much with my 5.7 crewmax.

I’m on my 2nd ZR2 and love it. I drive a lot of miles per year so I went from an 18 to a 2020. I love the look and stance , ride quality , handling and the off road ability. I’ve had the v6 in both trucks. No major hiccups at all. It’s a total head turner. I get people coming up to me and asking about the truck all the time. Even people on the hiway checking it out and giving a thumbs up. This truck is perfect for me and my uses. When I travel up northern Wisconsin it always gets its share of off roading. With the front and rear locker this little truck climbs like a mtn goat. I can only imagine how the diesel climbs with the extra torque. I’ve done some cosmetic mods and am going to do the 1” level 589 fabrication lift and a little bigger tire. I agree it all depends what your needs are. I have gear loaded in my truck and usually only pull dirt bikes 6 hours north of me. It’s a light set up with 2 Honda crf’s in an alum trailer. So I can’t really vouch for how it handles heavy loads since I’m pretty light but suits me fine. A good weekend in the north woods with the truck and bikes is like heaven to me.

I think you're minimizing the price factor quite a bit. MSRP for a 2018 or 2019 Z71 starts at $30,000 while the ZR2 starts over $40,000. That's a 33% premium. Then the Z71 is rated at 30 mpg highway while the ZR2 is rated at 22 mpg, so you're going to be spending another 33% more on gas every time you take a trip or commute. I'm not saying this makes the Z71 the better truck to buy for any given person, I just think that saying that the difference between these two trucks is only $3-4K is inaccurate and misleading. If someone is looking for a truck with the features of a ZR2, then I agree- they're better off buying a ZR2 than buying a Z71 with $10-15,000 of add-ons and mods. To me, though, the real point of comparing these two trucks is to see if the added features of the ZR2 are worth the extra 33%. Obviously for some yes, and for some no. Depends on usage.

I have a 2015 Z71. Stock tires. No lift. And I tear it up in the Rockies on a lot of off road trails. Have been wanting to put a 3in lift just to get some extra clearance but for the most part I’ve been able to do all the trails I want. More for peace of mind. But like you said, you gotta buy the lift, and then you gotta buy a whole new set of tires, and at that point you might as well burn your paycheck and get new rims too

I actually chose the Z71 CCLB over the ZR2 mostly because I was looking for a well balanced truck. For me, it was diesel or bust, so that automatically meant that I had to have the crew cab on the Z71. I also chose the long bed because I have been camping out of the back of it and a 5.2 foot length was not going to cut it. I also wanted the towing capacity because I plan on buying a decent size trailer. On the test drive, I noticed my truck had very underwhelming amount of horsepower, but the torque felt good. At first, I thought it was slow because I’ve been driving a engine swapped E30. After about 20,000 miles though, it seemed to “break in” and felt faster and the fuel economy went up a couple MPGs.

Good vid man! So I own a ‘17 Z-71 diesel. Firstly, great truck and it does great off road on most forestry trails here in the Rockies and is super in the snow. I have never been stuck in anything including some fairy aggressive Jeep trails. It tows up to 7,700 but pulls our two axle camper with ease. The subtle mods I did with the truck include a dealer level kit (2”), a 1” rear axle block and I have increased the track 3” using billet, hub-centric spacers. The truck sits exactly like a ZR-2, height and width. I’m running a 32.5 inch Toyo Open Country tire. The only part I had to trim for the increased track and tire size (went up two tire sizes from stock) was the front plastic fascia shield (support). I trimmed it back about an inch because I was getting a slight rub. So essentially the truck has the same stance as a ZR-2 but of course does not have the sweet dampers and front locker, but having taken the truck off road on pretty aggressive trails, I’ve never been stuck. Honestly, I wouldn’t take my $43,000 truck up anything beyond that. Stock, the truck averaged 26.8 mpg and now I’m averaging 24.5-25.0 mpg. But, I can tow and load well beyond the ZR-2s capability. Also I drive 40 miles one way to work. I looked at the ZR-2 but I found the Z-71 a better overall, more flexible and capable truck for our everyday and recreational needs. It pretty much goes anywhere with great mileage and perfect dependability. If someone is interested in doing a lot off road (aggressive) driving the ZR-2 is your truck, but for the real world (commuting, camping, towing, hauling, moderate off-roading, packing the family into for road trips) the Z-71 is a far more capable option. We get much better fuel economy and torque (its quite slow off the line, but I don’t care - I have a 180 mph two-seater for that) and a super smooth ride to and from work.

Great vid with good info. However, your price comparison I think is a little off. A Z71 can be had for quite a bit less than $41,000, making it a far better value in my opinion. I paid $30,000 for my new 2018 Z71 4WD V6. As you stated, the zr2 is clearly more capable offroad. But, unless you are doing some fairly aggressive offroading, I'd rather save over $10,000 and get a Z71. Ive added a set of ride height adjustable Bilstein shocks to my truck, raising the front up 2 inches. Next step will be removing the front air dam and a larger set of toyo tires.

Hi BigFrogs4x4, I'm thinking about either one of these Colorados for hauling my fishing kayaks around but I also run the beach and do a lot of highway driving. Right now I do it all with a raised Subaru Outback 3.6r but would like to be able to carry a Kayak in a truck rather than pull a trailer. That ZR2 gas mileage scares me but I doubt that the ground clearance of the Z71 can even carry me where my Outback goes. My Outback right now with 9.2 inches of clearance is better on the deep sand beach than any 4wd that I have owned going back to the 70s. Is the Z71 even capable in deep beach sand with that lousy clearance?
@BigFrogs4x4
@BigFrogs4x4 6 жыл бұрын
The z71 i believe comes stock with a rear locker but you would need to confirm that with your local dealer. If you are not in a hurry I may wait a few more years. Im hoping GM will put the new 2.7 4 cyl turbo engine in these trucks. That will offer great hp for a small truck and should be better mpg than the current 3.6 v6. You could consider the dmax but I am on the fence if its worth the extra cost and upkeep for the better mpg. I really like our dmax but when the time comes I can do my own work. If you just want to run loose sand and beaches I would go with the z71 and have a lift put on. Theres a lot to choose from and our local dealer said it doesn't void the warranty unless you use home made parts. Air down well and it should do fine. Or buy a power wagon lol. But then forget about mpg :-)

If it doesn't see enough higher speeds the exhaust will regenerate more often. Now this is my opinion but from what I've learned from the big rig industry, the more the truck sits at idle and/or slow speeds the exhaust filters have a shorter life span. If you drive more 40 mph or more more often it would be better. If mostly city I'd go v6. Plus mpg is where the dmax rules. And at idle to slow driving the mpg gap closes. IMO the extra cost of a dmax purchase and ownership isn't worth it to most people. Timing belt replacement alone if not done yourself can cost $1000. Thats what I was told.

Yeah just depends on what you will be using the truck for. The Z71 will be better for towing with the much higher tow rating and the 5.3 V8. More room in the Z71 for families but it’s also a pain to park and takes up a lot of space in the garage if it even fits. If off roading is your thing and your towing under 5000 pounds then the ZR2 is a no brainer. The ZR2 will go many places a stock Z71 can’t go due to the size of the half ton and the capabilities of the ZR2.

Michael Justa neither of the Z71 and ZR2 have the 5.3l engine option. Only engine avaiable on the Z71 are the 2.5 and 3.7. The ZR2 only comes with the 3.7.

I'm thinking about the Zr2 Dmax for overlanding. I would love hear your thoughts on the gas vs diesel.
@BigFrogs4x4
@BigFrogs4x4 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The biggest disadvantage to the dmax is long low idle driving. The exhaust doesn't get hot enough to burn off the junk and the engine can have regeneration issues. If you choose the Dmax get a scan tool like an Autel that you can put the truck into a manuel regeneration. They aren't cheap. But cheaper than a visit to a dealer and having any issue out on the trail. 1 day of wheeling seems to be fine. But not sure over a longer period of time. THANKS for watching and please consider subscribing if you didn't already.

You are correct. I believe it work by sensing wheel slip under acceleration and mechanically locks the diff until you let off the throttle. I think that's the one it has.

What’s a good out the door price on a zr2? I’m looking now and they seem high to me. Wondering how much I can get them down.
@BigFrogs4x4
@BigFrogs4x4 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on each area. Here in pa not much discount because dealers have a hard time getting them on the lots. In other states the dealers have a bunch of them. I've heard of people paying as low as $36k for a V6 model. If you can't get the price you want just walk away and go to another dealer.

Im in Alberta Canada so prices are different but I know a dealer who's a friend. He told me that up until now GM has had little competition other than Tacoma in the mid size offroad vehicle niche that ZR2 has. As a result they have been very stingy in offering decent discounts. He said however that will be changing with the introduction of Ford Ranger that GM anticipates will cut into ZR2 market share. He told me to wait till later summer to buy a ZR2 as they expect good incentives then to offset Ranger Sales Gord
