When u get to a point in knife collecting you understand that the small nuances in knives are what make them different and special. To a non knife nerd all knives look alike. I think it’s the small changes that make the general knife design special. The banter and baby banter are spot on designs. Haven’t gotten a lander just yet. But I can definitely see the design cues that make it different

What a reunion! I haven’t had so much fun watching a knife video in a long time. The honest, thoughtful, and nuanced conversation is much appreciated. Banter on! But what I’m really here for is to ask the question your Sanrenmu discussion made me ask myself: are the old Schrade, Puma, Case, Camillus, Utica, and Ka-Bar folding hunters all clones of the Buck 110?

That’s a great point! I’ve heard a lot of those other companies back lock, brass bolster, clip point blades, called a “Buck Knife” so that’s definitely an interesting topic! Such a great conversation guys! Loved hearing you guys get into the nitty gritty here. One of the biggest things I catch myself doing when designing knives is wondering "does it look to close to x, y or z". It's a pain, because it brings me to a point of indecision where some ideas just get scrapped all together. I think when sketching something, it is a lot easier to be hyper aware of your own influences in a way that far exceeds how others will see it. The sum of all of the parts is what makes something unique in it's own way!

Hey guys, those were very cool topics of conversation! I'm a product designer by trade (although I work in experience design nowadays and have long abandoned physical design) and I was pleased you did such great research in the topic, based it on actual design experiences you guys had and presented it in an easy to understand manner, bravo! I think a good talking point about clones, replicas and illegal dupes can be the dollar-based pricing point for very expensive knives. This conversation goes through buying locally and supporting local shops, the actual benefits of getting a "real" grail and how far they can stretch price-wise before they begin to falter (read: maker gets too greedy or item starts to feel collectible only), and how export value of american made knives is far too entrenched into the dollar market that it fuels the copy market that, honestly, can sometimes be so close to original these days the argument about price stretch becomes very, very real, even if you get paid in dollars. Anyway, I'd love to hear your opinions on it, Zac and Ben, as these philosophical pieces are very entertaining and enriching!

I've noticed on top of small similarities in knife designs, people also get stuck on color. For example, I feel like nearly every knife that has blue FRN or G10 scales gets compared to base model blue Bugout. When you look beyond the color, most of those knives don't look anything like the Bugout. I read those comparisons in online comments all the time and I don't understand how people don't see the differences. Edit: Also, I love the interactions with you and the old BHQ crew. It's obvious you're all good friends and have a lot of fun together. It shows through in these videos and they're a joy for us knife nerds to watch. Thanks for making the video and keep 'em coming! The reunion video out of nowhere! So good to see you two back together, the dynamic between you two is amazing. When I saw the thumbnail I thought KZbin was starting to show me old Blade HQ videos randomly but when I saw it was only just posted I immediately watched! My clone story is from back when I worked retail. I used to break down a lot of boxes when receiving deliveries, Whenever the annual stocktake came around I would go and buy a new knife. One year I picked up one that was a little smaller than my normal carry and felt durable and good in the hand, along with being cheap because I worked retail. It turned out to be a Sanrenmu 7023 LUI-SH which is their clone of the Buck 327 Nobleman. I only learnt what it was because I carried it for a couple of years. It was so nice to carry that I was worried I'd lose it and never find another one, so I researched what it was and bought another one as a spare (two is one..). I didn't realise it was a clone until much later when I was browsing Buck's website. I left the Sanrenmu in a friend's tent over the Easter weekend this year, I'd been carrying it just about every day since I bought it back in 2011. Sanrenmu definitely lean into the 'copy' side of being a clone but are at least not one of those companies that are trying to make a poor-quality fake/knockoff. Their business model of using other name-brand knife shapes and changing the specifics of the designs is plagiarism but the fact that I had one last over a decade at least shows there is maybe a place for clone companies (but not fakes) in the knife world. If you're going to test a few clones I recommend adding that one in to your tests. I'm sure I might get my knife back when I run into my friend at next Easters camping but it was $30 and I'm not crying over it because I already had the spare ..that I bought 8 years ago.. In the meantime, I'll be pulling the trigger on that Nobleman.

Awesome video. I especially loved how you two discuss the intellectual concepts of "convergent" and "divergent" design. In general, it sounds like a form of evolution, especially if you stretch this back to the stone age of cutting tools to modern day knife designs. The principles of "Form" and "Function" are definitely the driving force behind tool designing.
