Thank you so much for your wonderful instructional videos! They have really helped me deepen and formalize my practice at my local temple.

Comments here based on instant reactions, rather than understanding of the reasons for these protocols. I see it as bringing order to our minds and bodies, through synchronised choreographed movement. This helps settle us for meditation or just daily life. Is it necessary, no, rather its an aid, a way of pointing to the way.

I used to be Katholic, but never felt this religion is taking me anywhere forward. One of the reasons was this oversymbolised ceremonials that have lost the meaning long time ago. Zen Buddism is perfect in it's simplicity. I love how practical is zazen in developing my spiritual side. Such straight-to-the-roots technique. I'm still on early stages of my path. And I wanted to visit a Zen temple in London one day. I'm slightly gutted that Zen also has it's oversymbolised ceremonials. I really hope that's not the only way to practice.

If you don't like the way things are done in Zen, that's probably a good reason to practice it.

@@ZenAndPsychedelicHealingCenter I love zazen, and keeping things as simple as possible - this part of zen really resonates with me. I guess I might judge by my experience with christian church. Perhaps you are right. I will give a try to the zen service if such opportunity come my way.

there is nothing wrong with following traditional ways of doing things. they are not absolutely necessary, but they can be beautiful and can be a way to honor the past and the people who paved the way.

Nice video. It's like the Golden Dawn meets zen meditation circle lol. I notice everyone's in black, there's allot of traditions that advocate orange instead. The one I'm in is called Drukama, check it out. Be well all!

No, so sorry. ;)

Todd Boothbee meditation is one thing and Buddhist service as practiced by Sōtō Zen is a different thing. You haven't seen any zazen here. Of course you can meditate without chanting or using Japanese. ☺️

I really do not understand formality and structure in Buddhism. Personally, I feel such rigid formalities take away from what the Buddha taught.
@AngelOne1111 жыл бұрын
Structure helps set the mind free from thinking. If you know what to do next then your actions are automatic and your brain can be free from thoughts.

Gena Tunder as mentioned before, service serves a purpose but being a buddhist is much more than just half an hour of chanting. ☺️ Not all buddhists are monks or priests.. so your practice is definitely more flexible than that of a monk or priest

this is only zen buddhism. theravada buddhism is not like this I believe.

Gena, I don't understand it either, and I have been a practicing Zen Buddhist for 25 years! Most of this is that anal retentive Japanese love of order, and I also agree that it is unnecessary and not what Zen is about. It's about what Zen temples in Asia are about. We should ditch most of it, and some centers have.

And yet, you're still not a Zen teacher and haven't woken up yet. Funny how that works.

Joe Godinez I guess it really matters what is in your heart. I am an Orthodox Christian. I bow to the icon of Christ, to my priest and parishoners (as well as the gifts and Eucharist). There is no worship there, respect for what they represent yes. That'd be like me saying pledging allegiance to the flag of the US or putting your hand over your heart is worship. It is sad Roman Catholicism does such a poor job explaining the faith to people like yourself. That is why so many leave, Vain rite gets old when it seems to serve no purpose.

Hey brother I’m a catechuman in the church. I practiced zen and was an anagarika. I still raise my hands above my head when I prostrate and say the publicans prayer to raise Christ above me

photos of zen masters on wall, are moments not from empty Buddha Dharma. are not necessary for meditation and don't existing at all, if they are an enlightened. the master is one and the only - Buddha consciousness, you have or not. smell of heroes cult, in many many schools.
