I found your channel today! I am planning to switch to ereaders which is a tough decision for me because I want to and I also don’t want to. I need to switch because of my eyes; I’ve been getting eye strain a lot, i really want to do so as well because you can adjust the fonts and display whatnot to what my eyes are comfortable with. HOWEVER, I read and collect. I have been reading my entire life and have a huge count of books. If feel like they are friend and a testament to a journey/story I was in. Anyway all I ready wanted to say is that Ive been researching a lot and watching a lot of KZbin videos about it only to stop midway cos they aren’t as helpful to me. BUT YOURS IS STRAIGHTFORWARD but also just feels like I’m talking to a friend I trust and listening to his experiences! TLDR I just really appreciate this vid, thanks!!🎉

Thank you for your kind words. I also am like you. I like collecting books. But when I switched to ebooks I decided to make the best of it and started using Calibre software on my computer to store my ebooks in so I could fiddle with them and make them more like physical books if you know what I mean. I started to collect them and store them there. And they now also feel like my friends. I can highly recommend you to buy an e-reader. For example the kobo Clara B&W is an excellent e-reader to start with.

Then a kobo is right for you. I wouldn’t buy a color version though. I don’t know what you mean with streaming feature when it comes to books though. If you mean like Storytel then you need an Android based e-reader that can install apps. Onyx Boox e-readers are good for that.

How is your boox palma behaving? Is it as fast/slow as kobo? Or is it slower? I have onyx boox nova and it’s very slow! I think because it’s old, although my kobo aura ed. 2 is faster than my boox nova
@svartling

The onyx Boox Palma is incredibly fast because it has BSR. Boox Super Refresh technology with its own GPU. So it is much faster than all my kobos if I want. But when I enjoy a long reading session I turn on HD mode and then it saves battery and have about the same speed as the latest kobos.

Eye fatigue is the biggest disadvantage but battery life is close second. I was on holiday with a friend of mine and I lent him my Kobo for a few hours so that he can finish his book which he forgot to bring. I read using my phone during that time. It was 3 hours and he probably lost 3-4% or so but I lost a whooping 43%. It was with using the dark mode but close to 100% brightness. It wasn't a pleasant experience even with full brightness because even though max brightness is more than 1000 nits, it is not enough to combat the glare on the glass. Also, 4:3 aspect ratio is much better than 21:9 to read books in my opinion. And lastly, using a different device than your phone feels better while reading a book. I can't concentrate with the phone. E-reader feels sort of like a book even though it is also an electronic device. I can read for hours since its only ability is to show text like a real book.

I have been wanting a Boox Palma but I’m hesitant at the moment since I have already purchased two ereaders very recently among other other reasons. I have tried making my iPhone a bit more comfortable to read on. Someone shared on an ereader board to go to accessibility settings where you can “reduce white point” which helps the whites not be so bright so it helps when reading in dark mode and change the brightness of the colors to a more pale color on “color filters” and changing the grayscale setting. It has made it easier on my eyes. I like that on my phone it has “speak” and being able to change orientation etc. I’m hoping to add a matte screen protector to help with the glare. But yes, it is a very nice and different experience to use an ereader. I have the kobo Clara BW and the kobo Libra Colour.

Then you don’t understand much. E- ink is like paper. Try read outside with your smartphone in direct sunlight for example. E-ink doesn’t use power until you turn the page. So basically you can leave it on on one page and never run out of battery. LCD, OLED etc uses PWM for dimming that pulsates directly in to your eyes and makes your eyes get tired and can cause headaches. E-ink doesn’t use light at all.
