Back in the 1970s, there was this young guy who came to Tokyo to learn Karate, and obviously did a bit of English teaching on the side. Someone suggested he go to university in UK. So he signed up and during the summer and winter holidays he flew to Tokyo for some 10 weeks, taking over a friend's free-lance teaching schedule while he went on holiday, earning enough to finance his studies/travel. This continued; BA, MA, PhD, black belt 5th dan. Because of the confidence he projected, he was frequently taken for a member of the faculty rather than an undergraduate student. Moved back to Japan, became professor with tenure at a top Japanese university in Tokyo. Asked to conjecture how his life would have turned out if he'd never come to Japan: "I'd have probably ended up in prison." Recently left Japan, took the University's retirement lump sum and ran. Invested heavily in Crypto, made a bomb. Thus now able to afford his previous life style. The moral of this story: Britain drains your confidence, but you can re-invent yourself in a brand new culture. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

I have a question. Is a KZbinr (or gaming youtuber) considered freelancing? So can i get a self sponsored visa with that?

It is freelance/self employment, but immigration might ask themselves (and you) 'why do you need to be in Japan to do this'. It's very possible though, as income is income!

Now there's a Digital Nomad visa for Japan. It's only for 6 months and you have to have a salary of 10,000,000 Yen (~$70,000 USD) per year, but it's an option.

Artig å se nordmenn i Japan!

@@JustAnotherJapanChannel Takk for svar!

Going for the first time at the end of Sept 2024 - one question that you seem uniquely able to answer. Do you have any experience with the night buses with individual seat pods? You and I are about the same height and weight (190cm/100kg), and I am questioning if I am going to fit.

I haven't done a night bus in Japan yet, so I've never tried those pods! I have done 'vip' or first class bus seating for 4-5 hour trips and they were pretty cramped. Good thing they stop regularly so you cab stretch! Night train would probably be more comfortable if possible!

It’s a good idea to learn the pleasantries-Konichiwa, Ohio gozaimasu, arigato gozaimasu, sumimasen,. Here’s the phrase I used the most-Kore o Kudasai (this please). If you’re travelling to Japan for holiday you only need a handful of phrases. Here’s a tip for selecting restaurants in Japan. Several restaurants I visited employed people from India/Nepal and these people speak English. Many menus include pictures so point and say “kore o kudasai”. If a restaurant looks crowded and everyone looks Japanese and no English signs then choose somewhere else. There are so many restaurants. Usually the style of restaurant is obvious like Ramen or Sushi. With the Sushi restaurants they always had pictures. I went to a few ramen restaurants with only Japanese menu and I simply ordered the most expensive option ¥1000. Some Ramen place is order with computer tablet, no English option and I used google translate.

I would, and this is not just because I despise Tokyo, go to Osaka and keep it as a base. 30-40 minute train ride from osaka to Nara, Kobe and Kyoto, and a 2 hr shinkansen ride to Hiroshima for a day trip. That's how I would make the most out of my time in a week! I know it's tempting for many to visit Tokyo, but it is a megacity and you could easily spend 10+ days there exploring!

Let's say you start freelancing late into the year, but still keep your 9-to-5 and the combined income from both your job and freelancing make it over 2 million yen. Does that count, or does it have to be 2 million yen of specifically freelancing income? Also is it 2 million yen before or after income tax? Also is it 2 years as in January-December(or April-March since it is Japan), or a period of 24 months? Sorry to spam you with questions, but as someone preparing to go for working holiday next year and live off of freelance work while on it, having a clear path beyond that one year is very interesting.
@JustAnotherJapanChannel

From my understanding, the 2m yen a year minimum needs to be from freelancing only, as that is how they gauge if you can make enough at minimum to sustain yourself per year. Beat of luck!

Even though I've been speaking English my entire life, I never finished college. The same old story of life and family first. Now, I am widowed and need to fine someplace not as F'd up as is the USA. Japan is at the top of the list followed by Thailand, Vietnam or someplace else in SE Asia. I'm not wealthy but I can pass the financial requirements, with a little room to spare.

Appreciate your refreshing honesty. It’s actually quite challenging making friends in our home countries if we move to another city. Most countries are very diverse these days. Outside of Europe most places were former colonies. But in Japan they are a homogeneous block and this can be daunting at times. Even in Tokyo (away from Shibuya etc) there are long periods where you are the only foreigner. Most of the time riding the Yamanote line I didn’t see another foreigner. And as for fitting in- in a nanosecond they know you’re not Japanese. The flip side is if you want to feel remote or even live in a bubble then Japan could work. Personally it takes me about 2 weeks no matter where I go and the novelty starts to wear off. I wouldn’t last 6 months.

I've just returned this morning from 2 weeks travelling from South to North, and as an Australian I can confirm that it was just too bloody hot and humid. It really did sap my energy and desire to get and do as much as I'd planned. Throw in running from the Typhoon, and then stuck in a plane on the Haneda tarmac in last night's Tokyo downpour - I definitely won't be back mid-summer. Last year in late September was much better weather. BTW - the North (Hokkaido) is much more tolerable in the hotter weather.
