French-Canadians would never demand people to speak French, only in their own province. Yet English-Canadians would force French-Canadians to do so nation-wide. English-Canadians need to respect and accept that Quebec should remain the de-facto French speaking part of the country, since French-Canadians are respecting the linguistic choices in British Columbia as well.

After I finished school I had an employer call me up and tell me how impressed he was with my math credentials. I thought he was going to offer me a good job during the interview. Instead, he told me I could unload trucks. Seriously? I decided to sabotage the interview and walk out the first chance I got. I shook his hand and left.

This answer is different for applied mathematicians. For pure math, yeah you’ll mostly end up teaching while doing your research. But applied math, by definition, is applied to all other areas of sciences-so working in industry is much more common.

Pure mathematics skills can also be applied to the real world. It all depends on the person and their motivation.

I have really bad social anxiety and can hardly be in groups of people I do know. I’d absolutely do the no plus one rule but I wouldn’t list the criteria for it and be rude to people who didn’t want to go. Not feeling comfortable with strangers on your wedding day is valid and not feeling comfortable without bringing a plus one is also valid.

What kind of ring should boxers have their matches in? They want their chances of winning to be ideal, with finitely generated effort. So best to use a Noetherian ring.

To Sarah LaPlante's original post... I am born Québécois, but to define french Canada parenthetically as "(Québec)" borders on racist, and excludes the french communities of New Brunswick, Labrador (l'Acadie), Ontario and Manitoba (with representation in EVERY province and territory). Perhaps before doing an analysis on English animosity towards Canada's french citizenry, one might first try to understand that french Canada is focused in but NOT exclusive to Québec. Otherwise, why even bother asking the question ? You are just acting as a prime example of the disinterest and animosity. French Canada is CANADA. It is not restricted to Québec. I have lived in Ontario for nearly 60 years, and Québécois remains my identity and language. The struggles that this has presented were absolutely related to english Canadian animosity.

Not a fan of the statement "all other numbers are built out of the number zero". Its kind of true in ZF, but really all numbers are built using the set constructor, and only half of the sets in n are zero. And I much prefer a type theoretic definition of the numbers where zero only appears once. Lean's mathlib is large and getting larger, so I'm choosing to be future forward and pick type theory instead of ZF as the basis of mathematics.

What it is (often) is internalized misogyny: girls can do boy things because it's going "up" the social order, but boys doing girl things is going "down" the social order so it's "wrong".

I don't hate any polish just the crap cheapo Parkson and Arte Clavo cheapo brands, wouldn't dry and break off, and still be WET underneath even after curing it 4 times. Zoya Color Lock system for chipping and tearing my nails, and Essie Blanc white polish which smudged terribly and was jelly gloopy. Or Sally Hansen Insta dry topcoat that chipped within a day, etc. Or a old batch of MUA UK NAIL polishes that chipped my nails, painful tearing! Bit snotty, some people can only afford drugstore polishes! Good solution is, apply Zoya Fast Dry drops, dry and bond almost ANY gel or nail polish in 3 minutes rock hard dry! With Zoya Fast Dry drops, nails are DRY, Less lifting or chipping! But my nail tip just chipped off, oh dear! Use a gel builder overlay as a clear base to protect your nails! UK 🇬🇧💐💅

I remember the 1970s and the 80s, and how we were constantly in each other's pockets. Cheek to jowl. It was almost obsessive. French Canada was obsessed with doing anything it could to preserve and promote its culture. English Canada was obsessed with the obligations that it felt were being imposed on it, and the ever-present threat that Quebec would bust up the country. But for the past 25, 30 years, it's like that's largely been over with. No one cares anymore. We've disengaged. We've become like a couple that lives separated in the same house; staying together because it's cheaper and provides certain advantages, but living largely separate lives. It's sad, but it works.

The music in musicals is rarely ever good, partly b/c they don't keep up with changing tastes in recorded music. We're *just* now getting musicals with 80s-era hip-hop in them....40 years later. The music in Hamilton is worse than even the corniest 80s hip-hop you can think of. You won't ever see a musical taking inspiration from pop music until well after it has faded into nostalgia, and at that point any music made in that style is going to come off as a cheap, insincere imitation, especially considering that the musical theater world has a pretty stark class division. One of the only musicals I can stand is Fiddler on the Roof and the reason I can stand it is that the music in it is based on klezmer, Ashkenazi folk music, which is timeless. Chicago and West Side Story both lean on timeless musical traditions too: jazz and salsa.

I think your summary at one minute in is a gross oversimplification. The English didn't just let New France be and keep talking French from the goodness of their heart. They knew they did not have the manpower or resources to quell a rebellion, so instead they put the catholic church in charge of the French, and used them to basically enslave us Frenchies as a workforce for our English owners until the 1960's. Read up on the "Quiet Revolution".

In the states there is an unfortunate situation in when if one or both are on disability benefits and they make more than like 100,000$ or something together than the benefits are gone. Which is why some people in the states don’t get married because the benefits help them more than their job. A double edged sword
