I believe that the pickup was flipped to indicate visually which pickup had had its magnets changed, in other words, it had no effect on the sound at all BUT was a marker to remind the tech which pickup he had modded.

Good question, I would say they clean up pretty good, although I seldom play with a super clean tone. I have another video where I play these pickups that might have a slightly less overdriven tone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnqnm6ygeqpplcUsi=H11_ECetR6HirWXG

I have the fishman loudbox performer, and a friend has an AER 60 slant. Theyre both good amps, the AER seems surprisingly loud for a 60watt vs my fishman at 180watts. I think the tone difference is like that between Taylor vs Martin. One is brigher/tinny, while the other is more mellow. In their natural state/zeroed setting.
@largeeng
@largeeng 5 күн бұрын
The orientation of the pole pieces will not make any difference to the tone (or at least shouldn't do). The adjustable pole pieces were added by Gibson as a marketing gimmick on the original PAFs. Maybe wiring the guitar 50s style with good quality components and or swapping out the pickups (although that can be a case of option overload as there are so many manufacturers out there) will get you there.

Glad there's some more info! It's interesting as Tokai for a while had the Fender contract in the mid 90s for about a decade - these are recognisable (I believe) with the 'Crafted In Japan" as opposed to "Made in Japan" for the Fujijen made period. So they are quite active as OEM manufacturers. Tokai were approached by Fender in the early 80's initially but declined to work with Fender - I recall that in my Telecaster book, but may be mistaken. Re Pickups - - I think Tokai uses Gotoh mostly, though on their early Strats, the high end models had DiMarzio pickups. It really is quite fascinating! edit...just a thought, measure the neck pickup pot out of circuit as if it's below 500k it may impact the resonant peak of the pickup hence making it seem darker. edit 2: this is a great video by David Collins demonstrating how just the value of a volume pot (even at full setting of 10) can change the resonant peak and hence tone of pickup - search "Guitar Electronics 1 - Potentiometer Values"

Old Tokai, Greco and Burny guitars put actual Gibson and Fender's to shame! That's why Gibson fought so hard to keep them out of America, Gibson knew they could not compete against them and they'd go bankrupt in months.. Japanese guitars are 100% superior to American.. The old school super real puts a $7,000 dollar modern Gibson R9 to shame! Those old 80's Tokai guitars destroy their American counterparts with ease.. Gibson only pulled its trademark garbage AFTER they saw what Tokai, Burny and Greco was doing.. So to be technical, they lawsuit and trademarks Gibson used were invalid because if a shape is commonly used (being used by more than a single manufacturer) it's no longer a trademark but rather a common shape... Gibson just wanted to corner the American market and to be unchallenged by a free and fair market (which this action is unAmerican in itself) They stacked the odds 100% in their favor and basically said you'll purchase ours or you'll pay import taxes and duties and run the risk of it being damaged...

I clicked super quick when I saw this one! Love that guitar. And I can tell you’re digging it - you can hear it in your playing. Is it just me or is this Greco (and any mystery attached to it) a little bit more “cool” than having Gibson on the headstock? As regards brightening up a neck pickup…. try picking nearer the bridge in these moments. Over the years my picking hand seems to shift around constantly, like an EQ switch 🤣. I swapped my pickup round in my R9 but I did it as a wee personal salute to Peter Green. I can’t say I noticed an EQ change…. but I guess it’s worth a try. Cheers Thor

Hi Paul, I think it is fair to say we share similar taste in guitars, and yes I absolutely agree that this lovely Greco Les Paul is cool indeed. I have to be honest and say that if I could afford a vintage Gibson of similar quality, I would probably have thought of that as even cooler😄 But then again, a 1989-90 Gibson might not be considered vintage enough for the coolness to stick. Your tip on shifting the hand closer to the bridge when playing the neck pickup is a good one. I will put that behind my ear and see if I can manage to change my habits and incorporate that in my playing style. But yes, I need to try to swap the pickup around, and also to adjust the pole piece heights to see if there are something to gain from such adjustments. All the best!

Hi Thor! I have a Korean made Tokia Love Rock which was apparently made by Dillion Guitars. Somebody told me it was a fake and I can't find any more info on it. I'm not an expert of the old Japanese guitar manufacturers, but as far as I know, the Greco guitars were made by the Fujigen (FGN) factories, and the Tokai guitars were made by the Matsumoku factories. Also the Greco guitars' pickups were made by Maxon (Nisshin Onpa). And Nissin Onpa also was making effect pedals for Ibanez (ie. Tube Screamers). Tokai's pickups were made by Gotoh Pickups (not the same company as Gotoh String Instruments Parts). Very complicated, ha....... Of course there must be many exceptions, I guess..... Maybe you could ask AI chatbots on this things.

Really looking for help here; hopefully from someone w/ a good amount of personal experience with this particular amp. From the above video: "Nice to have the direct out... I've this [on the Fishman]. I like to use it as a monitor on stage because then I can set the sound I'm familiar with with the reverbs that I like. And I can send the dry signal, pre-effects, to the house P.A." My issue is that I keep finding conflicting info on whether the XLR DI out from the Loudbox Mini carries the reverb & chorus effects sound out to the house PA or not. This guy in the vid seems to be saying that it does not. Earlier today I spoke w/ an amp guy at Sweetwater (not just a regular sales person, but someone who specialized in amps) and he assured me that the Loudbox DID carry effects settings from the amp through the XLR DI out to house PA, etc... I actually pulled the trigger on it today and am excited, but now I see another seemingly knowledgable person saying the opposite of what i was told earlier today about this. WTF is happening? It really seems like it should be a straightforward spec to understand. Anyone?

Hi, to be honest, you made me a bit unsure. I may have gotten this wrong, and I also tried to find info online now. It seems that this has a different function on the mini, artist and performer series. I will test this tonight on my mini with recording the output from the DI and I will come back to you with the result. Cheers, Thor

OK, I tested it now, and sorry to say, the FXs are coming through from the DI output. I am sure I had read that the opposite was the case when I made this video, but I have obviously gotten it wrong. @@GUITARSGIZMOS You are absolutely da' man for taking my comment/question seriously and testing it yourself to see. HUGE thanks for doing that and for replying to me. But don't stop trusting anyone on KZbin! There's plenty of super knowledgable/helpful people on here (I know you know that); and you are one of 'em. Just always cross reference :) And while it's good news for me that it looks like you got it wrong about the effects coming through the DI (I want them to come through), I understand why you say you're "sorry to say" it. However, I also have a channel here (a total hobbyist one), and while I'm pretty sure you cannot replace an entire vid, I think KZbin may have an online editor tool that allows you to make little changes to existing uploads (cutting little bit; possibly adding text overlays; etc...). Could be useful for issues like this that come up. Maybe an easy fix. One last detail, and possible thing/issue: There's the built in effects/tone of the Loudbox (reverb, chorus, treble, etc...) that it seems we've determined DO come through the XLR DI out. But there's a related issue that maybe was what you'd read (and I'd be interested in this as well, though it's less important): If a player has an additional pedal board OUT FRONT of the Loudbox, possibly those effects don't go through the DI out to a PA/house system? Only the built-ins do? Ha! I'm getting kinda silly, but maybe that's actually a thing. Either way, for me the important thing is that the built in verb/chorus from the Loudbox go through the DI. Many thanks again, guitar&gizmos. Have a great day!!!

@@ForcesInMotion I checked now, and I can't add a note to the existing video (used to be able to do so earlier), but I can cut specific parts out, so will probably take that part out. I find it very strange that I've been so specific on how I noted the text on screen at 4:46 in the video. I'm 100% I didn't make that up myself - I just wonder where I found that info. However, I located a user manual from Fishman, although to a newer version that has bluetooth, and you can see from the schematics on page 13 where the DI output is placed (www.fishman.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/513-300-170_r4-User-Guide-Loudbox-Mini-WEB.pdf). That tells me that anything placed before the input, like your question about using a pedal board, will also be sent via the DI output. I hope that is helpful, and again, thanks for your heads up on this. Cheers, Thor 😊
@jdguitar1040

"...because it has a direct out (DI) in the back that goes to the house PA pre-effects; so it won't send the reverb or chorus effect that you have dialed in here on the amp to the house PA." This is very, very important information, and if anyone can help me with this I'd REALLY appreciate it. Is this accurate? When you use the XLR DI out from the back to a house PA the reverb and chorus settings/sound will not go through the house sound system? I'm pretty sure I've read other places online that those sounds from the Loudbox will go through the DI to the house system. Of course I know that people writing/talking on the internet can say all kinds of things, but that's why I'm checking here as well. Like I said, this is actually a critical detail/spec for the amp. Anyone clarify/confirm? Thanks in advance...

thanks and nice playing. I agree with your perceptions of the highwood differences (across 2 videos), but very hard to hear big differences on KZbin. My personal experience with Highwood's (nickel): more sustain, tighter peak around the fundamental note, slightly lowered mids, but less of that strat-like airiness and upper frequency chime or overtones. They work better for what I need, but may not be that vintage Strat tone.
