I'd worked at the zoo before, but I'm waiting for a call back to work at the museum as a docent because I'm pretty much interested working anywhere where I can have fun working with people.

I recently graduated from university with a bachelor's degree in Wildlife and Fish Conservation Biology and my dream job is to become a zoo keeper. Man was I disappointed when I got rejected for the first time from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. I've been looking for opportunities at other zoos across California but most ,if not all, require 2-3 years of experience working at a zoo, so that's definitely frustrating. In the meantime I'm volunteering at my local Raptor center to try to gain that experience. This video is very helpful for people in my position, and hopefully I can get my foot in the door soon!

i’ve lived on a farm for my entire life, helped out almost everyday. Does that count as experience?

Found this video a few years later. Currently studying a communications bachelor's, my family doesn't have enough money to put me through another degree (plus I love in a foreign country so changing degrees is really difficult). Been working at the animal shelter in my spare time, and it is the most emotionally rewarding thing I've done in a long time. Definitely going to use up my elective classes and put them towards this. I feel in my heart this is the right thing to do for me. From here on out it's dedication.

This is very true! My mom once was walking down an alley at night and something just didn’t feel right. She decided to immediately turn around and go home, next day on the news she saw that someone had been shot dead in that same alley! Listen to your gut people
@RickSchwartz10 ай бұрын
Exactly. It can be something as dramatic as what your mom experienced or sometimes something less dramatic. But either way, those nudges/instincts/gut feelings exist!

Such a primordial sound, like a dinosaur birds. Savage, strong, something very ancient. Beautiful. Glad to hear this is a zoo and not a pet caged in a house. I hope she has outdoor time.

Every zoo is different on what they allow for volunteers and age restrictions. But it is worth asking around at your local zoo or wildlife rehabilitation center.

Can someone that haven't work as a zoo keeper before,be employ as a zoo keeper for once
@RickSchwartz Жыл бұрын
Most zoos require and education or background in keeper work to be hired into a full time position. Every zoo is different, so iti s worth looking at what your local zoo requires.

I try to start my day with a joyous Kukabara laugh! Since I don’t actually have a bird, I have to do it myself …which causes some embarrassment when I drop off my kids at school. My head looking straight up at the sky as do my “COO COO COOO, Cah , cah, cah, cah, crrrrroooo crrroooooo crrroooo” cackle!

Can you work at a zoo with a vet tech degree?
@RickSchwartz Жыл бұрын
Some zoos have there own full functioning vet hospital on grounds and NEED qualified vet techs. Check with your local zoo or any zoo you might be interested in working at and you just may find a job opening for a vet tech.
