Great tones and playing! I have the SV20. My settings are: Channels jumpered, all knobs at noon except for presence and high treble (volume 1) at 9:00. For beautiful edge of breakup cleans, use lower output single coil pickups (a Stratocaster works great) or for humbuckers, roll the volume back. Works for me!

Absolutely useless using slide playing to demo differences between two Marshall circuits. Demo the amps rather than your playing with simple chords, clean, crunchy and higher gain.

I've not spent any time with a HX Stomp. I have friends that use them (Including a guy I play in a band with). This is just a budget friendly option in that sort of ballpark, I would imagine the HX Stomp would be superior in most ways it could be, although I do prefer the screen on this device as it's bigger and clearer. The HX Stomp is a much more fully featured unit with a tonne of possibilities. It's a really fantastic piece of gear.

Not sure which one would be a better option for Gary Moore style blues, I guess both will do the job.
@BenFletcherGuitar
@BenFletcherGuitar 5 күн бұрын
I guess it depends on which era you're looking to replicate. In his later career he actually went out with DSL100's, which are pretty affordable amps. Earlier he used 59SLP, so in this case it would be the SV20H. The Still got the Blues album was the JTM45 Reissue amps (I'm getting all this from a quick internet search by the way) so that would be the JT20H. However, he paired the JTM45 with a Marshall Guv'nor pedal which ironically was meant to emulate a JCM800! Ha! So he's making a JTM45 sound like an 80's Marshall, go figure! I'd lean more towards the SV20H if that's the tone you want, higher gain and a little more edge to it.
@Lordofmrak
@Lordofmrak 5 күн бұрын
@@BenFletcherGuitar His blues era. So, all Marshall amps practically ahahha, yeah, I was looking for something between Gary Moore and Bonamassa, SV20H most likely, or even 2525h, but that one is a little darker sounding. Hm, JCM800 is something I didn't even consider.
@BenFletcherGuitar
@BenFletcherGuitar 4 күн бұрын
@@Lordofmrak That's the answer, you just need to buy them all! I'd say maybe go for the JT20. You can create more aggressive gain with a pedal, but tough to achieve the sound of a JTM45 without that style of amp. If you're not going for super high gain, then it's probably a good bet.

For budget pedals I have experience with the Valeton GP200 and the NUX MG300. The inability to replace one kind of block with another kind in order to get two delays or two modulation seems to be common at these lower price points. With Sonicake can you change the order of the blocks? In the Valeton you can but with NUX MG300 you cannot (or at least you couldn't back when I owned it).

Very kind, thank you! I use the Marshall for band gigs. You can see it in the 1st clip when I move my ass out of the way, ha! In the 2nd one, it's slightly in front of me and to my left, so basically a few feet from where the camera is. I've synced it with audio from a Tascam DR40 which was on top of that fruit machine in the corner. The camera audio was a pretty savage mix, as you might imagine with the amp so close and pointing straight at it. I use the Humboldt for backing track gigs, as it puts me in the same space as the band. I like to pretend on these blues/whatever I'm playing here gigs, that I'm in the 1970's! Using an amp is part of that experience I guess, although in many ways it's easier playing out the back of a PA cab, both logistically and from a playing perspective. (For me anyway) Cheers, Ben.

@BenFletcherGuitar
@BenFletcherGuitar 21 күн бұрын
Cool! Hope you like the amp! You must plug it in to a cabinet, it can't run without some kind of load on it and the cab must match the ohm rating of the output you select for it. You can buy an inexpensive load box or attenuator. A load box would be silent and wouldn't require a cab, whereas an attenuator would still require a cab, but at least you could turn the sucker down! Cheers, Ben.

@@GuitarTeleMan No worries! Yes absolutely. I still use the Small Fry for all my gigs with this amp. I also have a Dude Pedal by J Rockett, that I use for gigs going direct to PA with a DSM Humbolt (Pedal board is so small the Small Fry won't fit!). The Dude is a good substitute for the Small Fry if you can't get hold of the Barber pedal. They're not quite the same, but I think you'll get good tones from either one. I'm currently working on a video comparing the Small Fry, The Dude and the Warm Audio Warm Drive (Zendrive). I gotta say, that Small Fry takes some beating for what I want to hear in a drive sound. I’m not a content creator, but just wanted to say that I wholeheartedly agree with you. Had it been the case that you were only required to provide them with a link to your product review, then perhaps that would make more sense, but given that they actually requested the video itself, that changes the game considerably - especially since they could potentially then use the music you painstakingly created in order to specifically showcase their product, which they would then be able to edit into a different video. I suspect that unless you had previously legally stipulated terms of use for the content of your video footage, then it might be considered that in agreeing to send them the video that you had tacitly agreed to their right to use the content in any way they wished, including at some time in the future. Bear in mind that I would also take it for granted that royalties would be paid on a per view basis, yet no mention whatsoever was made in the instructions they sent you relating to any sort of remuneration aside from getting to keep the item after the review. Incidentally, the very first thing I would do is tell them that you prefer financial remuneration over them gifting you the item. Once that has been clarified you are then no longer under any sort of onus or obligation to produce a favourable review unless you really found the unit worthy of a high rating. They should be contracting your services to provide an unbiased review of their product. Hou can use the existing videos in your channel to demonstrate the quality of the work you are able to produce, and the company should remunerate you accordingly. Unfortunately though, from what I’ve seen that’s just not how this works - especially in the KZbin platform, where these companies are spoiled for choice. Love your playing and tone by the way.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with everything you mentioned. I couldn't tell if they were being cagey about their response to my questions regarding a few of those points, or there was a language barrier. I thought exactly as you did, that sending them the files (had I accepted the deal and filmed anything) would basically mean I'd forfeited any rights to them. It was very eye opening, but I've since worked with another Chinese company who were brilliant and requested nothing from me at all. The product was good too! So I'm pleased to say that whilst widespread, not all the companies out there are operating like the one I mention in this video. Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated, Ben.

Really great video and smooth playing. I’ve been thinking about buying this amp but I bought an origin 50. Having owned and used several plexi 100’s throughout my life I’ve spoiled myself. They are too much these days though. I’m a little worried about what you said about the 20 watt not being enough for your needs. So do you not recommend using the 20 watt plexi in a live situation? That’s what I’m needing it for. Thanks for the great video.
@BenFletcherGuitar
@BenFletcherGuitar 13 күн бұрын
Thank you! I think live volume comes down to the type of gig. The 20 watt this amp offers is easily enough for me and most of my gigs I run it in 5 watt mode. However...that's assuming you have no use for a clean channel. You won't get clean volume from this amp at anything approaching gig volume. It's going to start to dirty up way before you get heard over a drummer. The JTM45 version of this amp (JT20) has more of a range of clean. Not loads, but you could probably play a low volume jazz gig on a clean sound, where the SV20 wouldn't even manage that. I'm already starting to sweat at the thought of playing clean solos, so I've got the right amp for me! Hope this helps.

@BenFletcherGuitar
@BenFletcherGuitar 21 күн бұрын
Hi, Tim! I still own it, but I haven't used it for a long while. I will fix it and sell it at some point. I had issues with it losing its settings on gigs. I lost confidence in it, because you can't edit the sounds without a USB and a laptop. Obviously I don't have those things with me on a gig, but I decided the whole concept of menu or app based editing systems wasn't working for me. I switched to something called the DSM Humbolt Simplifier MK2. One of my recent videos is about it. I pair it with an inexpensive IR loader that Sonicake sent me a few years ago. I like this setup, it's basically like having a head and a cab on a small pedalboard, then you just use your regular guitar pedals with it. The video will make it seem like I don't like it, but I think it sounds great and works in a very analogue way. I think IR's are the biggest leap forward in modelling tech. Captures are cool, but don't respond to your guitar's volume control in the same way as a model (in my opinion anyway). I know it's the latest and greatest thing, but they're very accurate at replicating specific conditions. Specific amp settings, specific input gain, but the second you deviate from that, it's no longer a realistic response. A lot of players never change the volume or tone on their guitar though, so it just won't matter to them. Anyway my point being, get something with user IR slots and most things can be made to sound great. I like my setup because everything is separate, but that's just me not wanting to wear glasses on stage and mess with menus! By the way, those Atomic units can be had for very little used. You could land on a bargain and they do still sound good. I hope that some of my rambling helps! Cheers.

FWIW I use this thing for a completely different sort of music - indie/punk - and it's perfect for my needs. I just set it to a good clean tone, maybe just short of edge of break-up, and use it after my pedalboard (which has all the drives/distortions). Send the XLRs in stereo to the PA/monitors and it's so much better than the Marshall stack we have in the rehearsal studios. I also blend the Vox/Marshall sims, and have speakers as a 4x12 plus a 1x12 combo. As you said, it sounds much better mixing them than having the same power amp and preamp type. I sometimes use the dry bypass signal as well to send a synth pedal into an amp - massive sound :-)
@BenFletcherGuitar
@BenFletcherGuitar 27 күн бұрын
Sounds like a cool setup you have there. I find that for things like looping/octaves in to bass amps/in your case a synth pedal, it's way more convenient to run something like this than real amps. You get in to a monitoring mess with multiple sound sources and there's so much more to carry. Direct definitely has its advantages. Glad you're digging it, there are good sounds to be had for sure. I screw it down to mitigate tension moment at the post inserts. With action set to medium low, the strings do not touch the bridge. I see no reason to undo the tailpiece posts at all they are best screwed down for tone and to mitigate the post insert's tendency to pull out of the body. If you want less tension then just do the wraparound option, but do screw the posts down until the flanges contact the tops of the inserts. Might want to clean the rust and corrosion off the threads of those posts also, that does kinda matter especially if you are splitting hairs with tailpiece height.

I would agree, that running direct to PA doesn't produce the best experience if you want it to sound like a guitar amp. I have QSC PA speakers, they sound way too harsh, high highs and super low lows. If you're running into your amps effects loop, you probably want to bypass the speaker sims, your amp speaker already has a sound and is not designed to be able to produce the various frequencies needed to simulate the various cab configs and speaker colors. I run mine as a 0-watt pre-amp and not as a part of my pedalboard; directly atop and into my mission GM-1 FRFR with my boost, gain, chorus, and distortion in front and my reverb, delay, and an additional boost into the effects loop of the Simplifier, and I'm getting a variety of great and tones, much better than the amplitude tones that I started with... Amplitube when dialed correctly can sound great for recording but horrible for amp in the room as compared to my Simplifier rig.

Hi, thank you for the Sonicake and Redwirez suggestion. I have the sample pack of greenback IRS and there are hundreds of them in there. Do you remember which one you are using.? Mic type and mic position of the speaker. Thanks Great Playing and great description of the amp and it's uses.

No worries! Yes, with this amp I use the R121 Cone edge 6 inches back. With my modelling device (DSM Humbolt) I'm using the 421 Cone Edge 6 inches back. It's a pretty comprehensive package they're giving away for free isn't it?!
