Wow, thank you so much. I've been a very active lifetime backcountry athlete, biking, rock climbing, canyoneering, mountaineering. . . A couple years ago I had a couple injuries that stopped me from climbing hard and it seriously impacted many other elements of my over all athleticism. I knew why, I know my body well and I understand what it tells me but, I've never heard anyone else explain it so clearly. Connective strength, core strength, balanced muscle groups working in concert, perfectly coordinated, is what I was loosing when I had to take a break from rock climbing. Balance and stabilizer muscles is another huge facet that you did not mention. . . I am 54 and still very active but video editing has put me in a chair more that I should be. I LOVE your advice about sitting on the ground, I know you are right and the harder it is to do it and get up is a direct reflection on how far gone your athletic health is. I have been weight lifting more to compensate for the lack of climbing and also noticed increased joint distress. I do think aging with muscle mass has it's advantages but, I need to get closer to balance using climbing. . . Sad how our culture so prioritizes muscle mass and does not see the true strength of real fitness and athleticism through balance and coordinated movement, thankfully, being active in nature has kept those thing alive for me. I do have a question, full suspention mountain biking in rough terrain has been a big part of my life, especially lately, what do you think about that sport? I fear there is to much use of very focused muscle groups causing some imbalance but, I will say, when it is real technical it feels more like wrestling than biking. Anyway, I was very excited to find you and confirm MANY of the same things my body has been telling me. Thanks Again! Please come visit my channel and understand the level of fitness and skill I have operating in all kinds of very rugged terrain! Cheers Brother! If you ever want to join me on something. . .

Those are very good tips actually, especially the push kick. But as someone who used to train attack dogs it is taught what's the use of wearing the protected sleeve to bite the arms. So some of that sort of seemed to me like you're just offering the target.

Thanks. I initially mistook a skittery dog behaving oddly as potentially aggressive, especially when he kept coming at me and trying to jump on me and into the car... Then I realised he was actually just terrified and desperately wanted my help. He was fairly big but was trying to get up into my arms for comfort. He had lost his owner and we were on a bombing range where there were low flying aircraft and the noise was bad for me so it must have been so much worse for the dog. I'm so glad I didn't react too quickly, hurt or abandon him and gave him the safe space/company he needed until the owner turned up. In those first few seconds especially it can be very difficult to read a strange dog approach.

One other tip that seemed to work in a situation I was in, is using something to block the dog's "aim" and vision of what it's trying to get to. I'll try to keep it short, but I was dropping off a CD in a small bag to my parents' friend, whom I didn't know. Long story short, their ENORMOUS German Shepard saw me coming and opened the half-closed glass storm door before I even rang the bell. After maneuvering to where I was facing the dog (and fighting the equally ENORMOUS feeling of wanting to run), I put my hands out palms out, fingers up and kept repeating "No, no, no," almost in an apologetic way as I slowly backed up, since he thought I was some invader in his territory (since his owner hadn't welcomed me onto his turf). As I backed away with my arms outstretched in front of me, he tried to bite my right hand, but I yanked it away in time. I look this thing in the eyes and it HATED me. I kept up with my "No, no, no" and slow backpedaling, praying the owner would come save me. As the dog advanced quickly toward me, without even thinking to do it, I instinctively put the little tiny CD bag right in front of its face with an outstretched arm, and kind of "hid" myself behind it (since an object close to something's face effectively blocks its vision, even if the object is small), and I kept maneuvering back. Surprisingly, it stopped his charge, and he started trying to crane his head around the bag to see me, while still going crazy. I'm thankful to say that it really seemed to interrupt his whole attack procedure and disrupt him, simply because I gave him a weird little problem to solve, haha! After doing this multiple times (the whole time thinking, "How long can I keep this up?" as I was getting VERY stressed, along with, "Omg, I've made it to this age without being bitten by a dog, but now it's going to happen...," I made it down the multiple porch steps, down through their yard, and out into the damn STREET, and this thing is still after me. It was probably approaching the 1 min mark at this point, but it felt like an hour. So, that's the extent of my tip/trick, but I'll finish the story: Some teenager comes out and starts calling for the dog, which couldn't care less. I start saying, "Dude, come grab this thing. Come grab this thing," and he just stands there and just calls, making me kind of hate him for it. Finally the dog runs to the kid and he starts scolding it. I say, "Grab him. Grab him. Grab him," and he DOESN'T. I couldn't believe it. Then the damn dog runs BACK out into the street right toward me and I start with my vision-blocking technique again, which works again, and then I fell out of one of my sandals, which also seemed to capture the dog's interest, interrupting his flow. The kid then calls him again and he runs back, and he grabbed him and took him inside. Finally the dad comes out and gives me a half-assed apology--actually, he didn't even say sorry, just, "Are you ok?" (which I guess is fair, as he hadn't seen what his dog had done....and I guess, in reality, it was doing what it was SUPPOSED to do, but still!). I told him, "I am, but that was INTENSE!.....I haven't smoked in 10 years, but I really actually just want a cigarette right now!" to which he didn't seem to have much to say. I then drove to the store, intent on buying some cigarettes, then I changed my mind and decided I'd bum one from someone, but I couldn't find anyone. By then I'd calmed down enough to be like, "Dude, stop looking for an excuse to smoke," and I left and remembered all that shit forever! 😂😂

The "intense calmness" also works well with humans...it's something I seem to have naturally. I've never had anyone swing at me in spite of a 20-year career in the Navy, around drunk sailors on liberty. The "off-center" stance is also my go-to when the situation seems to merit it.

For starters, bro bro bro many and most people cannot get up like that. Most people can barely do anything physical these days. So 1st of all, dogs chase fear, and a person/target running builds their confidence. 2 Act strong and stand your ground if there is nowhere good to retreat to, and even lunge at them as a mock attack; often times a time will give in to a bluff. 3 Do not be afraid to kick it or at it if you're able, but be weary of hard missed kicks as it might make you off balance. 4 If its biting you and wont let go, poke at its eyeballs if you can, or even grab one of its back legs and lift it up best you can. That will confuse and frighten it and likely get it to let go. 5 If its a pack of dogs, good luck, and try to get inside or on top of a car if you cant get inside a building. 6 Def carry a walking stick with you when out doing brisk walking exercises as they can double as a defensive stick. Quick story, 2 dif times 2 dif dogs attacked my dog [from owners who said they were good dogs and wouldnt attack]. Well each did and I had to literally choke them out myself with a 'headlock', its easier to jump on the dog to try neutralizing it while its distracted. To begin with, my dog is a friendly loves to play with others 55lb boxer/lab mix for sake of thought. The 1st time was unexpected as it looked like a super friendly pit bull of a friend. 2nd was a heavier pitbull that grabbed my dogs face when they were facing each other at introduction and being a bigger stronger dog than mine I was afraid it was going to rip my dogs cheek off so I tried to grab the attackers head to try to keep it from doing that gnarly rip n shake that dogs do and ultimately ended up on the ground with it in the chokehold until it finally calmed down. Yes these occurrences really happened. The 2nd time my thumbs were bleeding bc when I went to grab its head with all the movement my thumbs ended in its mouth and I could feel them on its lower teeth, but my dog was more important lol. Some would say stupid, others say caring, and ballsy, etc. But at least my dog wasnt injured except for the puncture marks on his face n cheek, but apparently he built the other dog more times as I wrestled it 🤣. I'm becoming an advocate for dogs wearing muzzles, esp at introduction.

On the topic of irresponsible / incapable dog owners, I had two encounters with those in last three months. First one while hiking - I was getting off the forest trail back into populated area, and at the first house I had to walk past, there were some older man doing something in his garden. I said good day to him and walked past the house. Now, I was on common road at that point, so I was not invading his space, I did not come suddenly from nowhere, nothing like that. But shortly after I passed the man, I heard furious barking starting somewhere at the house, which was maybe 20 m from me at that moment, and the dog, which I did not even notice before, was suddenly rushing at me full speed. I stopped and turned towards it, observing if the dog will stop and observe me until owner comes - that is how most of my encounters with dogs go - but this one was not stopping at all, he was clearly in attack mode. Luckily it was not too large. So when it get some 2 m from me, still charging, I charged back at the dog with aggressive posture, hunched slightly forward in grapplers stance - might not be the absolute best idea, but that was my reflex and it worked - somehow - the dog stopped his charge, confused for a second, but immediately started circling around me with bared teeth and jumping back and forth. I kept my business end towards him, doing something similar to that technique you showed at 11:05 , except with my foot instead of the stick, as I did not have one. Now, you might be asking what the owner was doing all this time. Well, basically nothing. Dude was just standing there looking. I had to tell him 3 times to come and collect his dog, all while trying to fend off said dog, and when he finally came to do it, he even has the gall to say to me that his dog would not do anything to me and that I should not have provoked this nice, calm pet. You can probably guess it took some self control to not punch this guy. Second encounter happened 2 weeks ago. I was running in the forest, when I saw another man walking with his dog off the leash, this time it was boxer. I slowed down to walk pace, dog sped up towards me. Unlike before, this one was clearly calm and only curious, so I just stopped moving and waited for him to come close and observe me. This time, owner actually tried to do something about it and called on his dog to return, however, said dog completely ignored him and jumped up, putting his front legs on my shoulders. Seeing it is still curiosity and not aggression, I stood firm, only moving my head slightly back, and after the dog had a good look at my face, he finally returned to his owner. Had I misjudged him, I would probably be in need of plastic surgery. At least the owner apologized and did not try to blame me as the previous one. So anyway, I just watched both your videos on this topic. Great job, very well put together with clear explanation, your tips sound very reasonable to me, and if something like this happens again to me, I will try to adopt more sideways muay thai stance rather than square off like I did before. Also, thumbs up for the chemistry you have with your dogs! They seem happy around you.

Never thought I would need this video, but just over the past years, I was nearly attacked twice by dogs. The most recent time the owner didn't even have a leash on it and insisted the dog 'never attacked.' Hopefully I'll never have to use any of these, but given out reckless some owners are these days, thank you for teaching them to me.

I'm always carrying two-pound dumbbells in each hand on my daily walks just as an exercise for my arms. One day a loose German shepherd attacked me by jumping at my face. I used one hand in front and the dog went for it but then I moved it quickly away and threw a right hook at its head. It fell to the side dazed and started running around shaking its head and disoriented. Still, the dog was able to take just a tiny piece of skin off the hand I might add. The owner was able to grab him at this point and put him on the leash.

I reposting blogger name *randomspirit's SO VERY much helpful information as follows and I think everyone needs to consider reading this VERY practical information as such: *I would add some useful tips I learned when I worked for a canine security company many years ago: #1 The first word most dogs learn is "No!" and very often when a dog is charging at you if turn toward them and say "No!" in a loud, commanding, and stern tone (not a scared shrieky tone), it will cause them to pause or stop long enough to allow you to escape. (I've used this, it works!). #2 If a dog jumps at you from the front, a quick lateral swipe of your leg can knock their hind legs out from under them, causing them to fall. IME, if you do this twice, they'll stop trying to jump on you because they don't like having their legs taken out from under them. #3 Grab their front legs (preferably above the knees) with both hands and simultaneously pull outward forcefully in opposite directions. This can dislocate their shoulders and takes them out of action instantly, or at least be painful enough to make them want to back off.*

RE: Case C - I was out with my dog when a German Shepherd that had gotten loose came at us and made a beeline for my pup. I was carrying my walking stick. I have to admit I was angry. After grabbing my pup's ear, he separated after a bit. I whipped the stick up into attack position, like a sword, and he decided coming after both of us was not a good idea and left. I'd also like to point out (having played lots of AMPGARD with a pole arm (😁) that you can use a skipping, sideways maneuver (I'm sure you know what it looks like) to open range while using your pole to sweep the legs. You can also reverse that motion into a lunge in an instant, pulling the pole up with your foreward hand to make a jab at the head or chest backed by the authority of your body weight. However, "better part of valor" for sure! You can't get bitten if you're not there, right?

When i was 11 or so i had to cross some unkown rural lands to return to the new house we had moved into. a dog came running out from a house to confront me. i actually stopped and did not move for about 5 minutes until the dog retreated and i slowly backed away from the house. I have almost universally not had a bad experience with domestic or well-trained dogs. in those type of cases i always freeze and assume the territory is the dogs - not mine. if the dog is mistreaten or poorly trained ( really the same thing ) than that is a different situation. as far as " wild dogs " they become dangerous (actually domestics too) when they form a pack. in humans it is called a " mob. "
