What a wonderful technique. Thank you for the detailed, clear explanations. Water and freezing is so ingenious if the kiln is close by, and the molded frit pieces need not be transported to another location. Therefore my question: could one make the molded frit with super glue instead of frozen water? Small amounts of super glue are used to hold fused pieces together before firing, but a molded piece would require much more glue. Would it be a problem? Glued items could be made before hand and better resist transportation to a class room. Would appreciate your opinion and experience.
@FiredGlass11 күн бұрын
Great question. Firstly, I'd' not recommend using superglue or any of the variants as they are mainly methyl 2-cyanoacrylate and can cause throat and eye irritation when heated to kiln temperatures. You could try the more fluid Glastac fusing gel, the red version to see if that works. Mixing it in with your powder could work. We've not tried it but in theory it should give you a more transportable option. The other one is to transport your frozen pieces in a cool box / ice pack type affair to keep them frozen until you get put them in the kiln. Hi, so what is difference between copper oxide and copper carbonate? so i did buy the copper carbonate, and had some copper leaf. the results of both are beautiful LOVE your work!!
@FiredGlass22 күн бұрын
Copper Oxide is stronger as it’s 100% oxide whereas carbonate has less oxide in it. Both can be used to generate bubbles. Oxide will give lots of blue bubbles and carbonate can give green bubbles. Both are best mixed either with a touch of clear powder or a coloured powder to tint the bubbles. Both need to be capped to work & will give best results at full fuse. I have used on a tack fuse but sometimes this can leave a residual of the black powder behind

Nice specially painting layers without firing with solution.
Over time you may find the bottle clogs up or the glassline is too thick. Firstly try standing the bottle in warm water for a few minutes then shake. But if that still doesn't work just add a few drops of water into the bottle, give the Glassline a very good shake and it will revitalise the product without fading the black after kilning

@FiredGlass2 ай бұрын

You will find the larger the mould the more difficult it will be to extract the piece without it breaking. There's also the risk of it cracking during firing.

Well I did get this awesome tool , cutting circles is such a joy! Can cut the all day long! Do you fuse 2 circles to make your little ornaments, what is your target temp? Was worried if I only used one, circle would distort in the firing......thank you for your guidance!
@FiredGlass4 ай бұрын
Great to hear you love the tool. We use a tack fuse which is 760ºC in our kilns, it may be different in yours. A full fuse or a tack fuse will work just as well. We only use 1 layer of glass for those ornaments. Firing a single layer will not distort, it will round off, but that's about it. Obviously this will be more pronounced on a full fuse over a tack fuse.
