I'm a Mastodon & Misskey Fediverse user, and have been for around a year now. I absolutely love it! I find it's so much less addictive without the algorithms regular social media has, and I can still follow my favourite Twitter accounts via bots. It feels more private, in the sense that it's harder for people to find you if their instance hasn't already federated with yours. Some instances even disable searching people's profiles, which makes me feel much more comfortable that people won't use stupid things past me has said against me. A lot of instances have a lovely sense of community too. I'm at the very least acquaintances with most people on my timeline, and have even made a friend through simply liking the same stuff! When there's no algorithms, and it's harder to find people, I find that it's much easier to actually make connections, and my time feels more well spent.

"The security is questionable" The security is fine with the current threat model. When you send a DM you're warned that those messages are not encrypted and that you shouldn't share any sensitive information. Also anyone can create an instance but not anyone can create a public one (i.e. that other users can trust) without enough know-how of how to make a mail server for example. And just in case you don't know, there's a group of cryptographers making a E2EE specification and implementation for Mastodon. We'll hopefully have it working later this year.

Locals I heard was really good too. the content creators can control what gets posted and you can say things more freely as long as the content creator has no problem with it. Check it out I believe you have to pay for it to follow a creator's platform, but it's less smaller community group without all those damn bots and rhetoric like Twitter. A relative of mine explained it to me. He said people are leaving patreon for locals too.Thanks Sun

I don't think adoption is the biggest challenge. Spam/scam/bots will be harder to defeat. Right now Mastodon is not a target for massive spam, but once it is, it will be a huge problem for the open source community and server providers. Email spam has been unsolved for decades and a huge reason why centralized communication tools partially replaced it.
@Raya.T2 жыл бұрын
it's pretty much exclusively a platform for niche groups and tech savy people. in reality it just doesn't scale to the common person. Content creators won't want to stay around due to not having virality and full reach to everyone which will result in regular users not joining either. In theory a decentralized network for social media is great for certain things you like. But in reality for social media a centralized way is frankly the only way to make a platform big and for everyone.

Can you make a video about 2FA risk models? I suppose not all people should prefer 2FA authenticator apps over 2FA sms, especially if they use auth app in the same device where they have the password manager. I know you already did videos about 2FA, if you will decide to talk about 2FA again it could be interesting, thanks, your channel is very interesting.

I am glad that you're back! I missed your content! About Mastodon: I've tried to use it several times now, but never really warmed up to it. The decentralized servers are great in theory, but super inconvenient in practice. If I have to register on a different server for every user I want to follow, the whole use of this "social network" makes no sense.
@krasky2 жыл бұрын
@martnnw _ Yes, I do. Only if the servers have a connection between each other you won't need to register on each server. That's the whole concept of "decentralization".

@@krasky thats federation not decentralization. If the servers are not federated then you will have to create an account for each instance that isn't federated

I would absolutely love to try Mastodon but I don't want to be associated with the virtue signaling children who are throwing a tantrum over Elon buying Twitter. Maybe in a year or two, but yeah, for now I'm going to stick with Twitter, MeWe and Gab (a fork of Mastodon itself) for my social media needs. Matrix, too, if you consider that to be social media.. but I consider it to be more of a modern chatroom.

Sorry sun, twitter is better service in general. Subscription model is the way to go to.stop or decrease surveillance tech. Twitter can be the role model to stop the ad incentivised attention based economy app ecosystems...
@morxemplum2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, most of Twitter's revenue comes from ads. At most, Twitter's subscription is going to be a supplement of the revenue, not a replacement. And because of Elon's polarizing moves to the platform, he's driving away advertisers. Twitter is going to lose money hard, enough to where it may not be operational. Mastodon just seems like an evolution of Twitter and may replace Twitter if Twitter shuts down.
@joshallen1282 жыл бұрын
twitter's centralization makes it popular because its the one stop shop for microblogging and easy to archive IMHO. Theres only one twitter, while there's at least 6000 mastodon instances. It costs money to host an instance, smaller yet more engaged, usually without ads or subscriptions. They are usually donation supported by the community

The elephant in the room is the network effect - many sites have tried to replace Twitter. Twitter will have to become super unreliable for people to leave
