Toyota really cooked the 80 series with the small condenser. I have a surf where they slung the condenser under the engine and its awesome. With the additon of that extra fan on your 80 series I would also charge the ac and go over to give it more subcooling and to stack more liquid refrigerant in the condenser. Another more expensive route is to replace the condenser with a new direct fit or a much better universal fit micro channel. Your car already has the largest denso compressor offered so replacing that will be fruitless. Another thing you can do is replace the evaporator and TX valve. Toyota at least used off the shelf denso parts so its relatively painless to source. I am lucky with my Hilux surf as toyota slung the condenser under the engine. I removed the twin 7in thermo fans and fit a 14in SPAL fan. replaced the evap and TXV and it really gave it a kick up the ass.

If you want really cold AC either fit a new evaporator core with a new TX valve or get your existing evaporator core cleaned thoroughly which requires removal. If you try cleaning it without removal will not be as good but ideally just get a new one. You would be surprised how much crap blocks up the evaporator core over the years limiting airflow across it. I got mine replaced with a new one made a huge difference much colder and stronger air flow. I also run a condenser fan.

I have cleaned mine out in a video that I had never posted as it didn't come out well and I didn't film very much 😂. I didn't replace it due to them not being available in the US, but I didn't know about partsouq at the time, so I may revisit that when I replace my condenser at some point in the future. Also threw a new expansion valve and dryer in as well.

So you consider lockhart basin easiest? Obviously Salt Valley Rd was easier because it's mostly just a dirt road. My very first trip to Moab, I went to lockhart the say way you did. Starting from town, going over hurrah pass. But I got my FJ Cruiser that was stock at the time stuck and high center on the last climb to the top of Lockhart basin before all the beautiful camp spots. After some wiggling I was able to get it back down and just a scratch on the rear bumper. The washouts on the boulders were pretty bad back then. But that was 2017/2018. I would think it would be worse now. But you place it as easy. Most people who think its easy run lockhart basin in reverse coming into town. But based on the other vehicles in your convoy I don't have much concern for taking the 80 on 35s up lockhart. It's the only trail I still want to do that I haven't completed. That I've been told multiple times is the best camp spot in the Moab area.

I recently changed my PS reservoir with a new OEM replacement, because mine leaked. Are you putting ATF in yours or actually hydraulic fluid? You'll have less cavitation which results in more whining and varnish if you use actual hydraulic oil. At least that seems to be the thought process. Buying K02 in 2024 just seems strange when you can buy K03. But if it's an excellent close out deal then you can't beat that. You mention the vehicle is heavy, but have you weighed it? Definitely worth stopping at a CAT scale to see what the weight actually is. Weighed mine recently because I am considering moving to the 2.5" VT coils at some point from the 3" flexi.

So I think for a stock or maybe a vehicle on 33s it's a good, moderate to challenging trail (Lockhart) with a pretty minimal risk on body damage. It is a really good scenic trail and camping out there is a great spot as it's rather remote. I think most yotas can probably make it through with a real good spotter or driver with at least some ATs After doing some Moab 7 and 8 rated trails after Lockhart with an 80 on 37s, Lockhart seems like a warm up 😂. So I think it really depends on your rig set-up and tolerance. After golden Spike I don't really see myself doing anything rated less unless I just want to chill out or I'm showing the trail to someone who has less trail tolerance than myself. If I'm looking for something to challenge myself, I'm going to have to aim for a 7 or 8 rated trail with my current 80 set up. KM3s we're very high on my list, however a lot of people have expressed how quickly they wear. They were also about $100 more per tire compared to 37" KO2s so I'm not gonna say that wasn't a factor 😂. A few people I know have burned through KM3s in a season of wheeling and about 30k miles. I just have personal experience with KO2s that was and still is very positive. I bought and sold a 4runner I had with the same set of KO2s with plenty of life left on them, which is really impressive imo. Perhaps one day I will try KM3s, but with me living in the desert for the time being, I don't really have a need to do so. And at the time I went to Moab KO3 didn't come in a 37" tire, so I didn't have the option to use KO3s, maybe next set I'll give them a shot! As far as the weight, it is decently heavier than stock, looking at nearly 250lbs added to the front with the bumper, and probably the same for the rear now that I have a rear bumper. Small amounts of weight can have a pretty large effect on wheeling capability, which is why you see a lot of serious wheelers, doing the Rubicon, Pritchet canyon/Rusty nail, etc stay as light as possible. You'd be hard pressed to find a rig with a full drawer system, RTT, huge heavy bumpers, etc not struggle through those types of trails. Either way, really happy with where my 80 ended up, and will be looking to get into some of the more challenging trails across the country going forward. I think I've got the Rubicon on my list for 2025!

Did you consider painting your new block before rebuilding? Or wish you'd done it now? I've read on the forums that sometimes these blocks come with subpar paint jobs and guys will strip them down and repaint. I've got a new block coming and I'm not sure it's worth it to strip off the factory paint and redo it unless it's really bad. Thoughts? Yours looks like it was in good shape, minus the exploding silica packet!

After a few months on it, it seems like it's holding up well. I'd say if you want to no doubt prevent any paint going away, you could rough it up and mask all the surfaces and throw some high temp on it. If you've got the time and space to do it, I'd say go for it!

May be a silly question, but is there a concern with running electrical wires through gas/gas tank??
@motor.mausGarage
@motor.mausGarage 4 ай бұрын
A few that should be considered: Make sure you're using an appropriate connection, no twisting wires together and calling it good. Crimp, solder, or connector. Don't need any sparks lol. Make sure you route the wires around from any sharp edges to avoid shorts. And make sure you're using connectors and crimps that can hold up to gasoline, most off the shelf ones do. If you're doing a custom setup, make sure any holes you drill get sealed. Bulkhead connectors, fuel appropriate RTV, rubber gaskets, etc.

I changed mine because the gas was showing at full all the time(but was empty) and noticed that the little sensor attached to the floater was stripped and pretty much open. Got a new one. Also noticed that if the floaters touch the metal part, it does not move up or down. And if stays down, the light will stay on.

I want to make sure I have all the parts on hand. Thanks!!!
@motor.mausGarage

I'm not aware of any lists, but the main points would probably be somewhere along the lines of: Pistons and rings (or just rings if you're reusing pistons) Rod bearings Main bearings with thrust washers Rods (if not reusing OEM) Freeze plugs Oil restrictor in top of block (can just reuse the original) Alignment dowels for the head Oil pump o rings Oil pickup tube gasket Rear main seal Timing cover o rings Oil squirters (if you suspect old ones are faulty) I'm probably missing a few things but that's the bulk of what you'd need. Obviously machine work would be needed, so I'd talk to your machine shop before buying pistons and rings.
