In my 20’s in California, I was in the position of needing welfare (freshly divorced with three kids), and went to the local offices to apply…all around me were black women, from the clients to the workers, and they looked at me with utter hostility, as if I were there to steal THEIR benefits. I overheard some of the conversations and understood that in their culture, they learn how to “work” the system, either from each other, from previous generations, or from within (by working in the offices, too.) Thankfully, I only needed the help briefly, and soon moved out of Cali.
