I wear the Swiss Combat boots for both work and leisure because they're so comfy. I'm now looking at buying a pair for another member of the fam who's always wearing out his regular footwear, but he's considering these Austrian ones instead. How would you rate these vs the Swiss ones for both comfort and durability?
@armyand_Outdoors6 күн бұрын
Thats a good question - I put this to my co-worker who owns both. She loves both (and our sales/reviews have both of these options as our most popular surplus boots) but the Swiss has a higher arch providing better comfort.
@godofmischief52226 күн бұрын
@armyand_Outdoors awesome, thanks for the quick response! I've been umming over the two all day. I'll probably get these ones for my son (for school and airsoft use - he can be the guinea pig) but his dad has quite a wide foot so perhaps he'll have to go with the Swiss. Either way, I'm slowly but surely outfitting the whole family with combat boots from A&O... They're literally the only footwear anyone wears once they get a pair. 😂

To correctly form the two side bags and the yoke, you need two straps to join the lower part of the yoke with the lower part of the bags. You're putting it together wrong.

😂 brought back memories 😂. Once you'd lugged it around a while you felt naked without it. Your belt (affixed to the yolk) is upside down mate and at the top of the yolk is another fastener for your usual digging tool. Bloody stuff doubled in weight when wet. The full dress (march) had the lot, belt, pouches, bum roll, shovel and pick, respirator, NBC Kit, stabbing and bashing things, amo (SLR and LMG mags), bayonet, mess tins X2, KFS, wash /boot kit, water, rations, poncho, dry kit, sleeping bag, helmet and more, much more, most of which I've long since forgotten but it added up to around 100lb plus in marching order, not including weapons, Comms etc. Battle dress you dropped the large pack, which could be used as a shooting cushion, but anyways this held your Lovelies, warm stuff, 24hr ration pack, socks, cigarettes, etc etc but the side pouches could hold LMG mags. These obviously came out being placed, or replacing stuff elsewhere on your body. Man I've got to chuckle, I'm 20yrs old again running around like a nutter 😂😂 not bad for a 60++ foot slogger😂😂 good days, cheers fella made my day. Oh the kidney pouch release thing made everything 'light order', quiet approach, hand to hand combat like stuff. Brilliant, much love, stay safe. Dave 🤪

Zelt means tent. It's meant to be combined with other "Zeltbahns" to form a tent, or to be used by its self to shelter one person. Fun fact: german boy scouts still use this exact thing, minus the camo ofc. They legally do not classify as tents in many countries, because they have no floor. Which allows us to make camp in areas where tents are not allowed. They are very practical, but quite heavy.
@armyand_Outdoors28 күн бұрын
they are definitely minimalist living, that's for sure. I would recommend a tent over these any day for camping (comfort wise) but if you want to try hard mode & like practicing survival skills with minimal gear or creating some interesting lean-too's, give one a go. They're a interesting bit of historical gear
@briantillmann811529 күн бұрын
Slight correction. The only german soldiers who get the privilege of molle gear and armor are troops on deployment and soldiers who are allowed to use private gear. Every Bundeswehr soldier still gets issued a set of these so called "Lochkoppel" with a standard of three mag pouches, a big gp pouch, a even bigger gas mask pouch, a canteen pouch and a shovel pouch. Everything else is privately purchased.
@armyand_Outdoors29 күн бұрын
yep that is more or less what I have observed from the outside. Huge variety can be seen from private purchases but they don't seem to be to strict on colours!

@@armyand_Outdoors i remember a guy saying that they can only use gear in tan or Flecktarn. Though their new "mobast" plate carriers are in Steingrau-oliv (german version of ranger green). So they might be allowed to use that color too.

UCP is a great camo pattern, of course ignorant people because they look at each other at 20 yards and are able to spot each other think the camo failed. Even for those that say UCP is useless unless is dyed green, I always challenge them to find me at 400 meters in the jungle (distance for which it was designed to blend) and every single time they fail, even in the snow they fail to spot me while wearing UCP. So, the few that understand camo and how it works, they appreciate it, those that are only limited to distances no longer than 50 yards in woodland and have not much of an idea about camo, they hate it. And it is understandable, nobody can blame you for being ignorant.
@seanflanaganasarous3908Ай бұрын
400 metres away in "the jungle" you could get away with wearing a clown suit due to vegetation. The reality is that Brigadier General James Moran, then-head of PEO Soldier, set up his own internal design committee of idiots with no training to develop UCP and added it to the evaluation along with the others Natick was testing. Natick tested it and the results showed that it's the worst pattern overall of all the ones tested, but had zero licencing fees, was developed "internally" and Moran had the deciding vote so it was adopted. It's rubbish. You can enjoy it but don't try for a minute to suggest people don't "understand it" or use it properly. It didn't even work in the two theaters is was theoretically supposed to excel in...

For those wondering why the pattern uses red, it's due to the wavelength of the color in light, over distance the human eye has difficulty detecting this color, leading to it looking like different shades of brown. This pattern is highly effective.

For those wondering why the pack is called the Bergen it is due to the fact the original large rucksacks issued to Commandos in WW2 were based on designs used by hikers and mountaineers based in Bergen, Norway. From there the name stuck.

Why are they called a Bergen instead of a rucksack or backpack? Where does the name come from?
@andrewcombe8907Ай бұрын
The backpack was originally issued in WW2 to Commandos and SAS troops. It was based on designs used by Norwegian mountaineers and hikers based in Bergen, Norway, hence the nickname. The name stuck from there. If you look at images from DDay the Commandos carried Bergen rucksacks as opposed to 1937 pattern small packs.

Good kit- initially designed by Bergaus, the British hiking company (who also invented injection mounded clips, like fastex and the use of hook and loop - Velcro and the internal aluminium frame) they were initially privately purchased because they shat on the 58 pattern packs which were like carrying giant wet sausages. After the Falklands the lesson was learned and OD and then dpm versions were commissioned. They made 2 lengths (short back and long back). Bergaus continue to make the civvy version which doesn’t have the pouch on the front but has the same side pouch/daypack system. The old version is called Vulcan and there’s a new one called crusaders or something. Another small pack was often stuffed in the top - Munro. I’m a bit old to lug around massive packs like this now but back in the day used them all. For a couple of nights I now use the NI patrol pack. It kind of looks like a miniature Bergen. Indestructable and far superior to any main pack used by other armies. The Dutch and Germans use the Vulcan though I think the Dutch have gone with something of their own now.
@armyand_OutdoorsАй бұрын
Something worth adding is the Dutch & Belgians also using the same design for the most part and you see a lot of Berghaus appear in the German Army as well. I'm sure there are some other militaries I'm forgetting that use similar formats.

One big pile of shite. Double the weight when wet. When new it was bearable but the stuff you got issued had seen too much service so it fell to bits if you didn't tie it up with string. When in the prone position the largepack bore down on the back of your neck making it impossible to look through your weapon's iron sights. Made basic training a misery. Thankfully by the time I hit Battalion the G10 Bergan was available which while not the greatest was way better than that abortion. Avoid other than as a curiosity.
