My wife is Argentinian and she does the same, doesn't ask to help she just does, which I think British people actually really appreciate. It is not about personal space, in the UK if you are an invited guest it's normal for the host to not want you to do anything because you are a 'guest', it's just how it is. So it's polite to ask to help but you'll always hear 'no, you are our guest'!

The second habit you mentioned, I had an embarrassing situation with that. My ex host family invited their parents over for the Sunday tea and as they had finished their meal, I just got up and started to gather the dirty plates, I was trying to be helpful, it is a normal thing to do in Brazil, as you know but, her mom found it quite rude of me, she asked if I wanted her to leave. There are so many other things you have mentioned and it became a habit for me too, countryside walks, closing the doors, saying numbers in hundreds, get used to rain, waving for other cars if they let you go, etc.

The keeping doors closed all the time is a new one on me. Unless it's occupied the bathroom door is always open and the bathroom window is open all year round in our house. But to each their own as they say. 😊

You must find it so hard with the open door/windows policy now to allow for ventilation in Covid times 😆 😆 Never be less enthusiastic or authentic, I tell my kids this all the time! If others roll their eyes at your outward joy or enthusiasm, they’re wrong, not you!
