For those of you thinking or retiring there, if you can, I seriously suggest that you plan well ahead of your retirement. Example, my asawa of 20 years and I bought a condo in Davao 11 years ago. It was our holiday home. I am retired and my wife is retiring in about 2 months. With our condo paid off and with our combined pensions we are considered upper middle class. When we finally move to DVO in 2 or 3 months, we are set. Canada becomes the holiday destination. In the Pinas we will be rent free and we will have only the usual day to day expenses and money will never be a problem. Plan ahead... :)

Most don't. They go visit. Get infatuated with the Philippines. Get hooked. Think it will be easy living. They run out of money. Can't say no to the many needy people. But you and our family made plans. We have built 2 houses. Have a large farm. Everything established and growing. I'm going to build a fishing boat. I plan to collect salt water fish 🐠 and export them. Built a sound system so the local barangay can rent it during festivals etc. So much to do in the Philippines. I also have a chainsaw. Plan to do some more wood cutting.

@@jesse75 What I didn't mention was the fact that my wife already owned couple of houses and part of a banana farm through inheritance and about 2 1/2 years ago she acquired a beachfront property and developed a simple but very nice beach resort managed by her oldest daughter in Davao de Oro. The beach resort is like icing on the cake.

Married to Filipina 27 years and currently on vacation here again. ;-) I would definitely agree with his points. Sometimes when you buy things they MUST take it out of the packaging to show you it is not broken and is working. Like we bought a microwave and they took it out showed us ALL of it and plugged it in to show it worked. This takes time so bring your patience for sure. Also my wife and I joke that even though the traffic can be horrible in the smaller major cities, you dont see people having road rage. Hell Dumaguete has ZERO traffic lights or stop signs and if you are not use to it, you would think it is CHAOS, but somehow there is no road rage. they live at a very different pace here. We also live 1 hour away from Dumaguete so it is not as simple as like in the USA where I can just get to walmart or home depot in 5-10 minutes for what I need or want. To drive here is to use your HORN plenty. LOL

You are very right dude !! When traveling or living in a foreign country he or she has to be prepared to face everything and you don't have to think just because you are a foreigner with a different complexion 😘😘you are superior than the locals. For me knowing a bit of the host country's language is really helpful especially in countries where the international language is not really easy to learn ! In a country in South America , if someone needs to learn the Gringo language he or she has to enroll in a language school ! The Gringo tongue ain't being taught in public schools like it is done in the Philippines!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩Thanks.

just a simple thing to put in the minds of foreigners who want to live in the Philippines. Study the culture, government system, environment, climate, facilities, monetary cycle, traditions etc. not only in the Philippines but also in other countries. Avoid comparing one country to another because their standards, traditions and culture are different. Not all times are comfortable. e.g. you cannot compare Manila to Philadelphia in terms of narcotics.😊 So there is a lot to consider in everything. You should plan in advance how long you will live or for life in the country you want

that is in fact great advice... I fully agree, as a traveler since 1995 and a citizen of the world... one of the greatest features of the Philipines is that they speak English, as the official language, so including government laws, street signs, etc. makes it very appealing for westerners of course from North America and the EU zone... comparing other countries is indeed a good idea and it's part of the research of the area, and due diligence before moving to a new country... but if other countries use English just in the tourist areas, but not officially that's a big and significant drawback... like even Thailand, or Laos, or Vietnam... no English, no communication, no progress in mingling with locals, absorbing the culture and traditions and eventually establishing a home base... yes, we should try our best to learn the local language, but until we do that, after 5-10 years of full immersion in their culture what is to do? struggle every day just to communicate the basics? that's not very appealing so, the Philippines have a great advantage ahead of other countries in the area, and Far East Asia...regardless of the deep research and due diligence, the simple fact they speak English is a huge benefit and for them, the locals, and for foreigners or tourists and visitors... using English as the official language was a very wise decision of their government officials when they decided that... much better than Spanish...

I am living in the Philippines 🇵🇭 for the last 12 years and what you said is true very true. For me the first reason not going to Philippines is the hot and humid weather. That would be the main one above all else. The second is the constant burning leaves and waste from the kitchen. These two drive me crazy but the worst is the temperature unbearable.

Sensory overload can be subjective, the motor bikes, the rooster, the city noise is okay to me, but the off key karaoke that vibrates through your walls and shut doors and windows at 2 am is a problem for me, but luckily some condos don't allow that. I don't have the patience of Job, but even Job would be tested in the Philippines, like going to a Jolibees in the mall and the only 2 items available are chicken and rice, no hamburgers, no spaghetti or any of their other menu items, including soft drinks. Also instead of them telling you that is the only things they have available you keep having to order something off of the menu until bingo you get lucky I guess or frustrated and leave. But it is what it is, it's their country not mine, even living there you are always a guest.

Your report is true i had already known what to expect having spent a lot of time online chatting and doing research geographical research also i have been here for almost two years now and i have a filipino wife who has two children and we just did have a child of our own she is from malapatan and has a large family and a many live on the mountain in Glan. Number one thing that bothers me the most is the severe of misconception that every foreigner that the filipino people see must be filthy rich and has money to pass out to everybody but i do enjoy my solitude and i plan to have a man cave on the mountain close to my favorite place which is a magnificent waterfall long story short i love it here and would never want to go back to live in america only to visit because i have five adult children and two grandchildren thank you again and i did learn more as a result of your report best regards dennis dayton

The PI is a great place to visit. But do not fool yourself. Once you leave the tourist paths, you are in another world..3rd country world! And once out of the major cities, you will find very few if any of the amenities you are accustomed to. Hot running water or even toilet paper can be hard to find. And yes, even drinking water. And in some barangays, medical care is non-existent people. Also, many there live with windows wide open and no repellent for insects. And flies, insects, and other small creatures are plentiful over there. Also, you must learn how to love rice and some other foods that maybe you are not accustomed to. The people are nice. But remember, you as a foreigner are seen as a $$$$ sign. Just know all of this before making your decision to live there. I lived in the PI with my Filipina wife for 2 yrs. And now we are back in the good ole USA and thankful for the experience. Living there for me however was not my cup of tea. I kissed the ground once I got back to the USA.

Excellent advice. I’ve been living here for a year and it is the perfect pace of life for me. I’m thankful that as a child all of our family vacations were rugged tent camping with no electricity or running water. I also enjoyed camping like that as an adult. I also did a lot of scuba diving in Mexico and stayed in some poor quality hotels in small towns or live abound dive boats. All that prepared me for my retirement here. I live in my spouses house along with a few other members of the family in Naval. Biliran Province. I’m not a fan of big cities. Random power outages bother them more than it bothers me. I’m not like many Americans that need things to be the way they were back home. One of the reasons I moved here was to get away from the rat race and growing hate on both sides of the political spectrum. There are about 10 roosters just outside my bedroom window at my neighbors, and I sometimes don’t even notice them now. I’ve written 2 books in this first year here and have a 4th one in the pipeline for 2024. I’m rambling, sorry. Once again, great advice. Keep it coming. Best of luck to you.

You are exactly like me. Im from the UK, late 40s. Not yet retired here but I have a gf I visit on long stays of 6 months which I use to get a feel for the place, the pace of life etc. We are in a great location (Pavia, Iloilo) right by rice fields with happy carabaos. We have no aircon but the heat bothers the locals more than me haha! Its a very simple way of life here and I embrace it. Moving to any country you either hate it and leave, are middle ground and tolerate it or love it and feel like a local. I hate the big cities too. Never been to Manila city and have ZERO desire too. I dont even miss my car and happy potter about with the gf in trikes and jeepneys. Good times!

The average American can’t handle an unexpected $1,000 expense, much less have three month’s income saved. As long as you have a way to get home it’s okay to try. One of the most prominent KZbinrs from the states arrived with almost no money and he’s thriving. The Ph isn’t only for the affluent. But you wouldn’t go with both no savings and no social security or other regular income.

I agree on everything One thing you should’ve added is food if you come from the west and you expect your steak to taste like an American steak or your hamburger to taste like an American hamburger you need to remember that they are using a different type of cow And if you want to eat like you do in the west, you’re going to pay western prices and you can only get that type of food in the bigger cities. If you go into the province, you will definitely be missing a few things off your dinner list.

I was amused at your comment regarding other countries getting a free ride in terms of health care. Here in the UK we have the National Health Service. However, we pay for it through heavy taxation. I pay 47 % of my salary in Government taxes.... then local taxation on top. Nothing is free in this world, it's just how the payment is taken that differs.

When I was advising people the three things I always stressed were: 1) do not EVER get involved with a married woman. This can land you in jail and get you black listed 2) It doesn’t matter what the local age of consent is do not get involved with anyone under 18 no matter how old you are. Local age of consent doesn’t apply to foreigners. In 2017 a barely 18 year old Aussie was sentenced to prison for getting an almost 17 year old girl pregnant. Secondly, if you are a US citizen since 1995 federal law prohibits you from having sex with anyone under the age of 18 in foreign countries. More than a few have been arrested at different embassies around the world trying to register foreign born children or trying to get their wife a visa. 3) Lastly if you want to live a western lifestyle it will be cheaper in your home country not to mention often be difficult in the Philippines.

2 WORDS! "PERSONAL ASSISTANT".. HIRE SOMEONE TO DEAL WITH ALL THAT BS THAT YOU DONT WANT OR HATE TO DEAL WITH... ITS WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT.. This person is responsible for all issues pertaining to running household.. Cooking, Cleaning, Driving, Washing, Errands, & ALL other duties.. Certain things about the Phils I knew that I could NEVER deal with.. Being military, you quickly learn to adapt, improvise, or overcome all obstacles. Having a VA Hospital here makes health care so much easier. Fruits, Vegetables, Milk, & Meats, I buy weekly.. All other household essentials, I buy once a year.. Even then, it's delivered to my home in discreet packaging.. My biggest headache to this day is all of the ROOSTERS! Day sleeper..

I recently had a lung operation and what I had was VATS( video guided) not the open type of surgery We also have RATS (robotic). Maybe what will affect you is it might not be free because your medical insurance might not cover it if done outside your country. We also have HMO here. Maybe check first if your medical insurance will cover you outside your country. If not you can apply for one here if you were in the Philippines.

From all I have heard, moving from the US to the Philippines involves *importing* cash there. Business sounds sketch there. Just be prepared to pay your way. Again, Occidentals import cash to these places, you won't make any. In a way, the process resembles basic gas pressure laws in physics

LOL! It's noisy in the Philippines! Why? 1. People know their neighbors and they'd trade a few steps for a little more exercise on the vocal chords to save on energy. 2. THere are very few secrets in the neighborhood, so what's the use on hushing up on the gossip? 3. People have small houses, so they stay outside more often. More chance to see friends passing by and talk. 4. People generally walk or take a motorbike (instead of cars). More friends to greet. Also, the bikes are extremely noisy! 5. People's houses may have flimsy walls. Noise exits more. 6. LOTS OF BABIES CRYING AND CHILDREN PLAYING. You hear all of them. But that's being part of the community! Just get used to it.

Me and my wife are already planning our future in the Philippines and discussing income ect…I’m a care assistant so my job won’t transfer there so we are looking at all sorts of other incomes be that farming (she’s already a farmer), online retail or some form of shop or i retrain into something else 🤷🏼‍♂️.looking forward to retiring in the Philippines at some point but still a while to go before I can do that tho, atleast 27 years 😂

Its no joke about patience!!!..9 hours at LTO to replace a driver's license. 5 hours at DFA just to be told I do not have all the documents needed, 6 hour wait at an approved LTO clinic for drivers medical exam (took 8 min to complete when called in,) and US embassy in Manila...woooo, pack lunch and dinner and hang out at SM park, its an all day affair!

This may sound weird but I decided to rent my house that’s paid off in Florida for 2700$ a month to go rent an apartment in a country where I can rent a beautiful apartment in a 79 story condo in BGC city 8000 miles away for 400$ a month for 5 years or whatever city i end up in the Philippines. It will finally give me the only way to save 2500$ a month for 5 years. Saving money has been impossible in america. The American dream is over. I can’t allow myself to get old and not have money saved in case of an emergency. In so tired of worrying about not having money saved. If I like it after 5 years I come back and sell my house if I dislike like it after 5 years I’m a plane ticket away from going back to my regular life at least I will have money saved. I will be 55 in five years I will live off my 2000$ a month pension in the Philippines and save the rental money it will fell good after five years to have 125k saved and enjoying a new beautiful country and a new experience. Living in america is not fun anymore

just be prepared for a renter of your house deciding to stop paying the rent. You'll be 8000 miles away and not easy to boot them out and get someone else to rent your house.

You never heard of taxes and insurance utilities alone cost 400$ a month Just because a house is paid off it doesn’t mean you’re free and clear of all bills. Once it’s rented I will be free off all bills. I’m glad rents are very expensive in america it definitely makes my life easier

Dogs are adopted for security purposes. There's a reason most household have dogs. Dogs are tolerable, but not karaoke or loud music with lousy songs, or lousy speakers.I woudn't mind if it is Marshall speakers,LOL Honestly, the earthquakes, and typhoons are one of tye biggest hazards here. Philippines is situated in the "ring of fire" area. Regarding MSG and oil...nah..depends on your culinary expertise. There are lots of healthy options around.

Non of these issues really phase me. The one think no one is discussing and/or thought about is ...do you really want to be in the Philippines when China decides to move? Notice how the PH military is really gearing up in 2023! They know Chinas coming...where else will the US deploy from! They (PH) are getting a lot of shiny new toys from the US, Korean, and Japan (mostly defense). Food for though!

There was one American religious pastor who became our neighbor in the province and he used to do religious service of singing,, dancing, lectures late into the night until they are the only house noisy, and they still didn't notice it, and wake up late in the morning. Problem for him was we have a neighbor who raises fighting cocks and he cannot stand their crowing early in the morning. Filipinos welcome these biological alarm clocks as the start of a new day. And here is this American guy shouting early in the morning, along with those roosters crowing, because he couldn't sleep. He planned to sue our neighbor because our neighbor could not silence those crowing roosters early in the morning. duh, lol.

With that income you'd live like a king in the Philippines or any other developing counties... In the states too people working full time jobs are not making that kind of money so you can live the middle class lifestyle easily...as in any other western countries, EU zone, Japan South Korea and Australia and New Zealand... The Philippines is a great country with great people and culture and traditions... and beautiful women would like to date you as long as you keep your wallet open... Keep your revenue and assets private and downplay it, don't brag about it or you'll become a target...in any country... Don't underestimate the slow pace, long lines, noise pollution roosters and dogs and motorbikes all day and night 24hrs government bureaucracy in dealing with paperwork resident ID, visa, etc. One full day - not hour - to buy groceries, critters and mosquitoes and ants and bugs and rats and mice... weekly power outages (depending on the location) unreliable internet, poor waste and garbage management below the standards you are used to, etc etc etc... Do not underestimate all that... Take a 3-6 months vacation, experience it first hand and only after that make an informed decision...
