I agree that the gameplay of Anthem could be a lot of fun indeed. There were some balancing issues though, like autocannons and melee becoming useless at higher difficulties, and how the story was presented was definitely not up to Bioware's previous strengths.

I always thought Hatred's biggest draw was simply how many different things the dude could fit in his coat pocket... You could have redone the entire game with just him stuffing more and more things in his pocket all the while demanding specific items be drawn out, but never getting the right one. The titular "hatred" could simply refer to his feelings regarding his bottomless pocket's refusal to just let him fish out that last piece of gum.

@@richardclegg8027 I've always argued that due to the Atari 2600's crude graphics, the only things that elevate Custer's Revenge from simply an adult game to something controversial, are the box art and the story in the manual. Throw away the box and manual, show the game to someone who knows nothing about it and tell them that it's about a forbidden love between a cowboy and a Native American woman. The arrows are from her tribe trying to keep them apart. Suddenly it becomes a (admittedly X-rated) game about interracial love and acceptance.

There is another one called Custer's Revenge, an Atari game where you play as a naked General Custer. The objective is to dodge arrows until you get to a native woman on the other end of the screen and rape her. Don't know how they missed that one, too.

The Cat Lady is one of my favorite games. It is gore and disturbing but has an underlying message that should not be dismissed. Has an awesome OST and artwork and was basically made by 1 guy, including most of the OST. The same for the other games from Harvester Games, which are all amazing btw. One of the best experiences I've ever had in about 30 years of gaming.

I didn't even know what "Song of Saya" was until this list, but I have been familiar with the titular character, Saya, for a few years due to her inclusion in the fighting game [NitroPlus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel] for the PS4. One of the first PS4 games I owned, and Saya was my main. After reading the character bio in the manual and seeing this list, her moveset makes a lot more sense...

@PikaLink91 At first, I took it to be some sort of Anime Crossover game(since a few of the Characters are in certain anime series). Surprisingly, it's just a fighting game featuring Characters from projects that involved NitroPlus in Development.

The premise of Thrill Kill actually sounds pretty awesome, and it sounds like the only reason it was "controversial" was typical American prudishness. "Oh no, these characters are kind of naked a little, won't someone please think of the children waaaaaaahhhhhh" 🙄

As far as Thrill Kill is concerned, the game WAS FINISHED (or close enough, like 95% done) and when Virgin Interactive sold to EA(?), they wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH IT so they quietly cancelled it. In fact, it was SO CLOSE to being done that I had a Thrill Kill sticker on my PS1 disc tray from an old 90s PlayStation magazine that was running PRINT ADVERTS FOR THE GAME in the SAME ISSUE. KZ Manager-here’s the thing: as HORRIBLE as the real-world events surrounding the game’s premise were, I don’t BELIEVE it should be completely barred/removed from sale, because it SOUNDS like it could be a harrowing management-sim kind of game, but once you get past the tryhard edgelord concept, you’d realize that it probably doesn’t offer ANYTHING it does particularly well that other games in its genre do without the horrifying premise that makes you do a double-take (I used to find old WEIRD and MESSED UP PC “abandonware” on the internet back in the early 2000s when I was like 13 and 9 times out of 10, once you tried it and got past the initial “shock value” and “offensiveness” of these games, they GENERALLY weren’t something WORTH CHECKING OUT for more than a few minutes).

Me too! Night Trap literally caused congress hearings and the creation of the ESRB. I actually bought it on the switch and my wife and I played it. It's so camp, has no blood or nudity and is more funny than scary. It's such an interesting example of how people can get swept up in hysteria and exaggerate how bad something actually is. To be fair, the ESRB ended up being a good thing. Btw, it's very interesting to play as a piece of history, but it's a horribly designed game.

When Thrill Kill was set to debut, I had my money saved up to give to my mom (I was in the 9th grade at the time) to buy for me. Being a hardened Resident Evil vet, at the time, 8 figured it wasn't going to be that bad... till I read in the latest GamePro magazine that it was being canceled. Lol I still remember all the conversations me and my friends had about it.

About the only games I’ll say has no rate to exist are ones that spread out hatred towards groups of people, Rapeplay, and at least one Columbine game. Also if you can handle killing millions of people in GTA, then you can handle doing it in Hatred. The only difference is that GTA has you do other things then just kill people.

That concentration camp game is actually appaling. I do think censorship goes crazy and for the most part games shouldnt be policed so heavily but making...that of all things an interactive experience is unacceptable. I think this one's pretty indefensible

As I pointed out on another recent whatculture gaming video. While yes, ET was an absolute dumpster fire, it also was crazy innovative. There was a reason for everything in the game. But due to time and technical limits, hardly of them could be made clear to the player. It's almost entirely the company's fault for refusing to delay the game and not having anyone but a single programmer given the task to make the ENTIRE game. Let alone the gaming industry (at the time) was in shambles for many other reasons before ET was released anyway. It was just the final nail in the coffin.

Manhunt is very misunderstood as a series. You aren't killing people for fun, but being forced to kill criminally and violent insane inmates by the Warden. You aren't supposed to enjoy the violence, but be sickened and repulsed by it.

As someone who bought Song of Saya on Steam purely out of morbid curiousity, people should know that while that version is censored an uncensored patch that is compatible with the Steam version can be bought and downloaded from the developers own website, as well as their own full and uncensored DRM-free version of the game if you don't fancy giving Steam any of your money to begin with.

I'm surprised that JFK Reloaded didn't make the list. Admittedly it's not much of a game as each session only lasts a minute or two, but it still qualifies. As you might be able to guess from the title, you play as Lee Harvey Oswald and try to assassinate John F. Kennedy. Actually, shooting him isn't the difficult part, it's trying to do it the same way as Oswald. The game is ostensibly meant as a research tool to see if it's possible for anyone to duplicate Oswald's shots and thereby prove that he was the one and only shooter. At its core it's just a very limited sniper scenario with a real historical figure as the victim.

Hello, Jess! I played Harvester. What a completely messed up game, with a somewhat solid, but off the rails story. One of 2 most disturbing games I played. There was one other, which was current with Harvester, but I cannot recall the game. You are "visited" by a high tech entity and given a job as savior of your world and all you hold dear. Supplied with a list of people who need to be gone, you proceed through the game, with ever increasing complicated scenarios, and then a bizarre near-end twist that guts you and it just gets worse form that point on. But as bad as that one was, it wasn't more horrific than Harvester. Fun times, in the early '80s.

Even without the violence, hatred is not a good game. It reminds me somewhat of blood and honey, a game only existing because it was possible to make, not because of a big idea or interesting premise rather than just the idea "Violence the game" while things like good gameplay or story lagging behind.

The most ironic thing about Manhunt 2 is when the police questioned the murderer why he followed a murder from a video game it turned out the guy wasn't even a gamer and had never even heard of Manhunt and the guy that got murdered actually owned Manhunt 2, talk about such a b.s. reason to pull a game, just saying we didn't pull Metal Gear Solid even though nuclear war has actually happened and millions died, humans are really picking their battles backwards aren't they. If you don't want to play it just don't buy it, plain and simple, don't censor me because you're offended, obviously within reason.

Nice clickbait! King Kong wasn't even on the list, but as it is THE "unacceptable" game to talk about right now I understand why. That said, very confusing list. With King Kong on the thumbnail one would think they meant unacceptable as in "just very bad games" but then you open with Hatred and lots of other disturbing games who are "unacceptable" for a variety of other reasons, only to then feature Anthem further up the list which goes under the "unacceptable because it's bad"-list, to then cap off with another "unacceptable because it is disturbing" game. Like... what was the theme with this list??

I was there around for the controversy around Hatred and I guarantee you: there wasn't such thing. The game's creator deliberately manufactured the controversy in clear hopes that it would sell under the banner of "stop censorship". And, at least for a while, it worked. When the game launched on Steam it gathered a large amount of positive reviews, absolutely none of them talking about the gameplay and instead saying things like "Censorship sucks" and "This game didn't make me a murderer". Granted, to be fair, there _was_ a minimal attempt at censorship when Valve initially refused to put the game in their store until Gaben himself intervened. But I'm pretty positive that Valve's initial refusal was because they saw through the transparent attempt by the developer and not out of a desire for censorship. In any case, cooler heads seem to have prevailed, since the game has largely been forgotten. And deservedly so. The entire reason the developer went through all this controversy crap was because he knew as well as we do that the game was very forgettable.

You could play ps1 games on it, don't know if it was bc of the chip or it was possible on a regular ps2. I never owned a playstation 1

I believe the main problem with Hatred was the developer, Destructive Creations. Jarosław Zieliński (CEO) and some members of the team are far-right, and were found to side with ultra-nationalism, were homophobic and anti-muslim. Take that and a game about killing everyone due to...well...hatred for mankind, and it was a receipt for disaster. Personally i never played the game so i have no idea how "good" it is.
