I'm fascinated by how the dial lock works. It looks like there are two hardened pins positioned 180 degrees to one another inserted into the outer face of the clutch cone. Then the ring rests on the rounded noses of those two pins. The inner face of the outer cap has a similar hardened pin on one side and the nose of the locking screw 180 degrees to it. The cap then keys into the clutch cone so that its pin and locking screw are held at 90 degrees to the pins in the cone. Tightening the dial lock screw levers the ring against the pins in the cone, pushing it into the taper in the dial, locking it in place. I've only actually had my hands on one 10EE that had originally been delivered to Los Alamos (Manhattan Project) in 1943. I think I wanted it as much for that history as anything, but my wife wouldn't let me get it. It looked pretty sad, with a pale blue paint job covered in grime, but seemed to run great. I just hope that another one eventually comes my way, even without the history.

Wow, It would be awesome to have a piece of machinery with that history!

Seeing the assembly and methods was awesome on the cross slide....funny, using my lathe I noticed that it always hit zero which I assumed “just a fluke”...now I know better
@roberttauriainen92423 жыл бұрын
Mine is about 2 thousands off zero. Must have been within spec. I guess it does not matter since repeatability is what is more important when using it for threading.

Thanks for explaining how that dial works. I never understood how it really worked up until now. It makes so much sense now.

According to the parts diagrams on Vintage Machinery, the middle ring in the stop mechanism is the "Loose Collar" and the outer two are "Lock Collars". My adaptation of the design for my Logan lathe only does 2-1/2 turns because one lock collar is fixed on the shaft with a set screw. Floating it on the shaft and adding the two stop pins to the dial gets the other half turn. Maybe one day I'll make a bigger dial and revisit my design. For the dial to hit zero at both ends of the travel, the nib on the lock collar that bears against the inside face of the dial has to be in the correct quadrant between the stop pins, yes? In use, I assume that the procedure is to tighten the thumb screw, run the dial in (or out) to zero, then touch off on the workpiece with the compound? Of course Monarch precision ground the the collars to line things up perfectly on zero, and of course they captured the thumb screw. That kind of precision and attention to detail is why I desperately want a 10EE someday soon. I just have to finish my new shop so that I have a place for it. Your videos will be invaluable when I finally get one. Thanks!

Hi Jon, Thanks for the comment! so yes...I run the dial to zero and touch of with the compound as you mentioned. Good luck on your quest for a 10EE!!

the 3 turn stop was probably designed by a person who had worked with dial type safe locks. a brilliant solution that i am amazed that other lathe manufacturers never put into production lathes.. or did they ..
@fourpondsshop79403 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if this feature exists on other brand lathes. My guess is probably yes

Well, you motivated me to take mine apart and clean up the inside of the dial mechanism. I put everything in the ultrasonic and it is now spotless. One question: The lock on the front face of the dial is pinned and looks like it should be able rotate 90 degrees up so you can bypass the stopping pin. This would allow you to adjust the pressure of the lock. Mine will not rotate up and I am afraid of forcing it. Does yours rotate or am I wrong on how this works?
@fourpondsshop79403 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. So I checked the 3 10EE's I have and none of them seem to be set up so the lock can rotate. It appears to be fixed. If you need to adjust the position of the locking lever, you would need to disassemble the handwheel, knock the pin out and reposition. If you notice in my video, I assembled the handwheel with the exception of the stopping pin, positioned the locking lever and drove the pin in at that point. Hope this helps!

I just can't stand those marks from the crash. I would have taken that carriage over to the mill and put matching bevels on each side similar to the ones on the compound, taking just enough of a cut to clean up those dents. You've put so much time and effort, not to mention money into making the lathe beautiful those divets just are too much. It would be a very easy thing to do. Just me I guess.
@fourpondsshop79403 жыл бұрын
Gary, I'm with you on this...I really wanted to clean that up but choose not to, then once I reassembled the machine, I regretted not cleaning up the scars!

what is the second graduated dial with no numbers used for?
@roberttauriainen92423 жыл бұрын
The last set of marks are a reference and always move with the hand wheel since they are keyed together. The center section may or may not turn depending on if it is locked or unlocked.

I'm in the hunt for a good square dial 10EE and may be interested in the 30" depending on the price you want and the cost of freight. I live in northern NV. Would like to talk to you directly or by email. How do I get in touch with you? Getting quite an education watching you. You are doing a terrific job with the videos..
