also for inexperienced bird owners (or visitors to bird houses), don't forget that if they don't trust that your hand is stable then they'll test it with their beak like Cody was a few times. I've seen a lot of people pull their hands away thinking it was a bite but in reality the poor bird was about the step up and was then confused! haha

ive never seen anywhere how to troubleshoot if your bird has stepped up onto your finger and then bites it while perching there. they used to be just putting their beak on my finger but it had turned into a bite what do you do in that situation

Haha when Picasso's on your shoulder he doesn't take his eyes off you. I can imagine in his little birdy head he's saying to you "Are you thinking about me? I know you are. Just look at how beautiful I am. I knew there was a reason you chose me. It's because I'm gorgeous. Go on, give me a kiss and tell me how great I am. I know you can't resist this hunk of love."

when i rescued ronald he hadnt been out of the cage or touched in 14 years so when i tried to put my hand in he would flip out, so each day i just sat beside his cage with my hand inside the cage it took about 2 weeks but one day he just stepped on ❤ and i managed to bring him out of his cage and after that he changed and became tame and loving really quick, i got flapped at abd bite a few times befor the but perservering was the best thing ive ever done, he has a lovely free happy life now with lots of love and he brings me so much joy, so to anyone who thinks this is never going to happen my parrot hates me just be patient they will come around, and its so worth it xx

Faith Lauren so Faith where are you at now 9 months later with your grey. We just got one on Fri Sat he came out of his cage and will let us hand feed him. But no touch. He is singing and making his noises. Last night when he went inside to eat we closed the door. He ate then put his head down and let us pet his head. It was sooo rewarding. Can't wait for more engagement . So exciting. Like yours Jake was neglected after his daddy died 2 years ago.

Today I brought home a baby budgie from a breeder. His name is Akoni and he is so beautiful. Akoni is about a month and a half or so old, and has been hand fed. If you’re considering a breeder and a pet store, the breeder is definitely worth it. Within 2 hours of Akoni being in his cage, he let me pet him. He doesn’t move much haha, but that is expected. I’m super excited for him to get used to his environment and be chirping all day. When it comes to his training, I do have experience as a dog trainer, which I’m glad about because my patients is pretty strong with things like this. I’m really excited to see where these next few years go with Akoni.

My budgie, Dollar, now only likes the improvised perch I made for her which puts her just above and to the left of my head when I'm sitting at my desk, working on my computer. Otherwise, she (its a female) tends to just find some place like under a chair or table where she apparently "thinks" she's hiding. When she's on her perch and wants my attention, she now comes down and gets onto my hand even when I'm typing on the keyboard. If I don't respond, she begins pulling the hairs on the back of my hand until I do what she wants (usually, she wants to ride my hand to the TV so she can watch it). It's taken 60 days to get this far, for weeks I thought she might never adapt to living outside the cage at the pet shop.

Thanks Marlene. We both know this is a two way learning process and both the person and the bird have to learn from each other. It will be interesting to see how Dollar handles flying after she molts. I think she's going to be a bit longer before that happens. I'm sorry that the pet shop clips the wings of their birds, I definitely prefer birds that can fly around the apartment. Until then, she's learning to ask for a ride and even walks to near where she wants to be lifted up and starts chirping. Tonight she even walked by herself to the bedroom because I was "late" taking her to her cage for night time. :-)

Just what I needed. I find myself getting frustrated at times with our progress. I always make time to take my amazon out on a daily basis. She's not comfortable with hands so I have a hard time getting her out with my arm/hand as a perch, but she loves to come out & hang on top of her cage. Rare & a BIG treat for me when Memín decides to step down or fly off her cage. That's the only time she trusts me enough to offer her my hand as a perch. I'm so glad I found your channel! & love that you point out different types of engagement. Although I find myself wanting more in response/bonding, I know it's important to give it time. Glad I found this oldie but goodie Vid 💚💛🐦💚💛

Awesome job on this one Marlene!❤ I especially love the "hands on" approach videos like this one. I'm sure many of your followers would agree that this type of video aids in their learning far better than one where a person just sits or stands in front of a camera and only TALKS through the steps. in a private message you mentioned this video might not apply to me since Santina and I are past these stages. However true this might be, think of Lisa and her bird Simba. This video is also great for retraining from the start if a situation like Lisa's comes up. I 💘 that you really truly listen to us on the parrot station and engagednotcaged then bring our questions, fears and concerns over to KZbin and allow us the joy of seeing you and your beautiful birds while answering all of our questions. AWESOME❤AWESOME❤AWESOME!!!! P.S. check your private message for a picture of what I looked like after waiting up til 3a.m. for this video. Hahaha

What type of bird would you recommend for someone who's never had one but wants a good devoted relationship with one?
@oliviahernandez6
@oliviahernandez6 7 жыл бұрын
ThisBeautifulRomance Stay away from Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazon's and similar. They live to be at least 80 years old, are loud, and definitely not for beginners. Pet stores say that Budgies live 5-7 years, but with the right environment they can live 15-20. You can get a budgie for 20 dollars at your local pet store, but they won't always bond with you. I have a Myers Parrot, and while they can be argumentative, they're relatively quiet and easy going. (Most of the time). And whenever possible, #adoptdontshop.

From what I've read, no to the Indian ring neck. I have intermediate experience, and I'd say either a conure or Senegal would be okay. My conures are okay behavior-wise for the most part. One has never bit me out of anger or fear while the other is cage aggressive and moody. They are both noisy and destructive. One is needy while the other is pretty independent. I've had them going on 6 years now and love them both but this video is spot on, so think hard on your decision to get one.

Masa Mohammed hi I'm not sure if you got your answer but what I use to do for my bird was get a perch (tree branch) and get him on it and just put my hand or a book above his head this helps prevent him from flying off the perch you have them on I also worked a technique where I played with the toys in my birds cage or his food in his food bowl he would get into the cage by himself. But when they figure out that you're using this as a tactic they stop doing it lol!

We just rescued 2 10 year old+ parrots (an African grey and Galah Cockatoo) and both of them have spent way too much time caged. They are very nervous and bitey and this is the first time ive had an older bird. This video and others of yours have helped tremendously!!! Keep up the great work!

You remind me of a younger me with these birds.. You do things as I would have at your age and even now... I really love your videos.. Right now I have a cockatiel and a blue quaker doing really well adjusting as she blue quaker has been here only 6days and came to me strait away...now the cockatiel is much older and we have had her 5 years age is unknown she is not only jealous but only goes to certain people but even though she lets me and my daughter hold her on our shoulders she does not like affection from just anyone so she toys away from them or gets to the point she protects her territory for sure...

Love your videos, personally I've probably watched and rewatched too many of them. In this case, I brought home a new bird and wanted to watch this video again because it's 100% good advise. PLEASE keep doing what you do, I just wanted to extend some gratitude for the excellent parront tips. You are awesome, also I hope Picasso is okay, it was a little tear jerking to see Picasso again, such a sweet bird, I really hope he's doing okay. Much love!!

Thank you for the ideas. I took in an abandoned budgie that was clearly never hand tamed. We’ve worked on stepping up with him in the cage and he’s made amazing progress. He has grown to like me and engages in singing and dancing and eating treats from my hand. We have a good bond starting and a routine. It’s just he panics every time I take him out of his cage and flies hysterically around. I try not to make him feel like I’m chasing him, but it doesn’t always work. I never thought of leaving the cage door open and to let him decide when he’s ready to come out. I think this is going to change a lot for him. ❤️ I just want him to be the happiest budgie in the world.

I’m getting my first bird tomorrow!😬😬 Cockatiel! He’s 7 months old and living in a dingy pet store!😢😢 I have a lovebird coming in a couple months who will be hand raised but my heart is telling me I need to get one of these cockatiels! I know it’s going to be hard work! I want his wings clipped so I can train him easier! They go nuts when someone approaches the cage! I’m slightly worried that I’ll scare him! I also have 4 kids a Mastiff and 2 cats! Im a single mom and share 50/50 custody! I love birds! My ex wouldn’t allow me to have one! It feels like Christmas Eve right now!🤣 I’ve done lots of research but watching you has given me hope! Thanks so much!! Keep being you!

I love your videos, you have educaated me so much! I was a horrible cage bird owner... some how I knew I was wrong but.. there was no You tube then.....I watched videos and came across yours and they made so much sense. Thank you... My dogs (4 large, well trained) , horses, (2 ridden in cool comps), chickens - just doing chicken stuff :) and keeping an eye n my 89 yo mum who cooks and lives life large (Eunice)... All in all, I think my cockatiel (Marvin) has won best from your videos....I have learned a lot, therefore I have helped him as much as I can. I now take him on weekends away, and my buddies look forward to seeing him... You have given me the confidence to do this.. thank you so much!!

Thankfully my 14 year old bird who was never out of his cage, ever, before coming to live with me, has never bit me. He gives me kisses & within 3 weeks had picked up my voice and always loves giving kisses & still hates stepping up & being in his cage. From the time I get home, regardless of what time unless it’s dark, his cage is unlocked & he’s interacted with & has become a cherished family member in less than 6 months.

Hi. I've recently adopted a Timneh African Grey who is 30 years old and to our knowledge has never been let out of the cage or handled. I've managed to get him to take food and treats from me whilst in the cage but can not get him to step up or come out of the cage. Your videos are an amazing help and I've learned a few good tips from yourself and I admire the patience you have to build the relationship that you have with your beautiful birds.

I have birds too, i feed them and watch them daily. They fly around and are very happy. I am inside the cage and they are outside, they are wildbirds and have never been in a cage. They like to come perch on a tree near my window and sing. They know i am the one feeding them and they pay me visits even when the bird house is full of seeds.
