I’m so happy you found a good school for Ezra. I hope he loves it there. My 9 year old has had horrible experiences in every school he’s ever gone to. He was physically abused in a Mother’s Day out program at 3 and his needs were dismissed and not supported both times we tried public school. Because my son is verbal with no intellectual delay, the schools expected him to stay in mainstream and act like all the other kids. I even took his therapist to the iep meeting with me to help put proper supports in place but they kept denying his needs. He ended up refusing school all together and suffered so much trauma from it. We homeschool now and won’t ever go back.

I didn't have a good time with school, i was selectively mute and needed to sleep after doing my work just to not be over stimulated into a meltdown. For classes i wasn't allowed to sleep in I would ask to use the bathroom if i could manage to ask and I'd cry. I failed all presentations because i couldn't speak in front if the class only one on one i could, and even then i struggled. That was my high school life. Middle school and elementary school was not much different. i played by myself and didn't interact with anyone, i wish someone understood me. But i guess i got through it all and graduated, I'm homeschooling my kid though. He was eloping too much at school and doing self harm stims, he's been much better at home

I feel so sad for you one of my best friends. Emily is struggling in school right now and I feel horrible for her as well. She was going to a school where she could get some support, but because she didn't have an official autism diagnosis she didn't get as much support as the other kids! It's okay in elementary school I had no friends whatsoever and I would just really keep to myself And in high school, I've gotten a little bit better but in School I've found it harder to speak to people and I don't always feel comfortable speaking in social situations. I feel like I would have it selective mutism, but I was never diagnosed with that Sometimes in school, I get really anxious because of stuff that makes me anxious and even if I feel angry and I want to rip something or I want to throw something if I do that then I might get in trouble so I have to keep my anger to myself.

School for me was bad bad very bad until 10 tenth grade when I dropped out. During my years in school from late 60’s to early 80’s not a single teacher or doctor ever told my parents that I was different or that they suspected I might have some sort of disability. I didn’t learn much more then the alphabet, to read and very simple math. I love researching so I have learned most everything I know today from google, tv, books, the internet and watching people. Discovering in my 50’s that I am Audhd has helped me to live better and in peace just knowing.

I can relate. My son is going to school since January and we love his school. But before he has gone to 4 diverted threatment groups. Most groups where great. Especially the one how was special for kids with autism. He made sooo much progress there. But the last group was horrible. His group should be preparing him for school but there was no structure and he basic question ‘witch school are you preparing him for’ they could know answer’. And the spoke so negatively of him. That broke my hart because before everyone loved him. Great tips that we had to learn the hard way to. What we did at his current school paid off immensely. They told us that they wanted to experience themselves how my son was like and what he needed. Because I thought the needed to know a couple of things because if they didn’t it could cause trouble. So I wrote them and email with three things and a vived picture of what happened at the groups. They understood and that’s why he had a good start. Love your videos and your family. So nice to here that you have found the right school for Ezra. Hoping for lost of progress for him. I noticed he was calmer in the video.

Thank you for your content! I’m a foster mom. Our family got a placement of 5 siblings and the 10 year old boy has traits of autism but is undiagnosed due to severe neglect. His autism is severe. Mixed with trauma it is even harder than we thought it would be. We are not going to give up on this sweet boy though. We will advocate for him as long as he is in our home. Our school has been difficult to say it nicely. It has been an awful experience. We live in a small town and have no other school districts nearby. I would love to chat with you if possible. We need help! I’ve never been a special needs momma before and being treated as poorly as we have been by the school has been a shock. I didn’t realize how much harder being a special needs momma can be!

I didn't get any kind of diagnosis until I was 16, and although Asperger's was one of the things in the list, the medical professionals were focusing on depression and anxiety which looking back on it was unmanaged autism and ADHD. I only had a 504 plan not an IEP however I feel like it was overall good enough and the teachers, and school was good at following it. If I would have known what neurodivergence actually was then at that time though, and how it affected me, I would have been able to ask for even more accommodations that would have made school a whole lot easier!

I would maybe add asking what other supports can be provided. I was not diagnosed with ASD until my late 30’s, but I had a lot of help through disability services at uni for my mental health issues. There is no way I could have completed my degree without this help. But I remember when I first went to disability services they asked how they could help me and I had a few vague ideas, but it was the things that they suggested, that I would never have known were options, that really is what got me through. E.g. I have severe social phobia, so for every prac class I had someone (usually a masters or phd student in my field) who was paid to be there just to help me). In Australia we have the NDIS for people with disabilities. Again, when I first got on the NDIS I had some ideas of things I wanted but then the person who does the funding interview had several awesome suggestions, that I had not known were options. So, long story short, ask what supports are available, because you may find some really awesome things you would never have thought of.

School was very hard for me when I was little. But it got easier when I was in high school. It was hard for me not to get distracted from school too much because I have autism. But I think that if I watched videos instead of just listening to my teacher, school would’ve been easier for me. I think it would be easy for everyone, especially autistic kids to study what they have to learn at school if they watch videos of what they have to learn at school. I pay a lot of attention to a video when I’m watching it, even though I have autism.

I got diagnosed when I was 14 with ASD. I started having behavioral issues in middle school. When I was in 8th grade the school district transferred me from a middle school to an alternative school for students with behavioral issues which did not help my behavioral issues. I attended the school until I was in 11th grade. In my 11th grade year my mom got me transferred to a private school which I graduated from in 2013. When I attended the private school I had less behavioral issues. While I was in school, I also attended an after school program for students with disabilities. It did not go well for me because I also got overstimulated at the after school program and had behavioral issues because of the overstimulation. After I had graduated, I attended an adult day program for adults with disabilities and I did not have a good experience there because of behavioral issues. I now receive respite which I have a good experience with. My respite caretaker takes me to the zoo and other fun places.

At Middle school I was with people who was at my age and then I struggled with some support and then I went to a program in Sunnyvale called Education options it’s for people who have disability I wish I could of got extra support I did need in college the Autism process takes too time consuming and making adjustments,admitted times .After That since due to age 22 years old I have to do De Anza College tell whole truth since I have mild features of it but excel in sports and the special interest that I am in .I do like the whole campus environment in some areas but not all of them above .

Me in school? Um, not good. I was excited to start school at age 5. Not everyone went to kindergarten in those days. I did.K and 1st were great. I liked it much. Except for not having any fine motor control, so coloring and writing were a mess. Mom said the k teacher called in a panic, "Tentoes can't color!" I liked reading. Life fell apart the first day of 2nd grade. I offended the teacher greatly by coming into the class room barefoot. I had never worn shoes or socks in class before. Then a little girl spoke up and said, "Tentoes NEVER wears his shoes." This offended him even more as now he knew which child had the audacity to be named "Tentoes." Now, I was mute, so as I went back out to get shoes and socks back on, I thought, "You don't have to get mad, just say 'Tentoes, wear your shoes, please.'" He generally made sure I was triggered the first thing every morning, and Mom almost always had a phone call before I got home. The third grade teacher in a different school in a different town with a different name, "Tom," was a caring man and tried to help me along. He called me "Tommy." He put me in remedial reading, which was GREAT. Twice a week, I got to go outside, take a long walk by myself to another school where a nice lady let me read ANYTHING in the library! I could go on for a few more grades...

When I was growing up back in the 1980s the rights that parents had regarding their children’s education were not well explained. For example, I was two years old when I was first diagnosed as having right hemisphere damage from a stroke around the time of birth and also diagnosed as being on the spectrum. Even so, my parents didn’t know that they could put together an IEP until I was at least five years old. When I was in class in first grade and later I was often distracted by the flickering of the fluorescent bulbs. Sometimes it would be almost painful. By about third or fourth grade as my communication skills started to improve I told my teacher about this and she told me that the school cannot afford to hire an electrician and change the lights because it was not in the budget. I also told my parents about not only this but also the effect that the fluorescent lights had on me (including triggering meltdowns (which in those days were interpreted as temper tantrums)) in Marshalls and some other stores. I guess my doctors didn’t explain my conditions all that well because I was always told that “that’s just life”, “You can’t always get what you want” (Like the song lyric (sometimes followed up by the follow-up lyric of “But if you try sometimes you’ll get what you need.” That was not helpful!!!)) and to “just ignore it” and back then everyone thought that it was reasonable to talk to me in this way (especially considering my age at the time). Often when I acted out it was interpreted as a combination of attention-seeking, sibling rivalry and being spoiled. Later on it was attributed to these factors and also “teenage hormones”. I had some speech therapy in my school but this mostly consisted of working on words with the “f” or “th” sounds. It did not include working of words with the “r” sound in them. Therefore I still struggle with words with the “r” sound in them even today (over forty years later). The “r” sound often comes out sounding like either an “uh” sound or a “w” sound. This is an actual speech impediment but it was not recognized as such back in the day. Therefore when I mispronounced words with the “r” sound in them it was always assumed that I was speaking in baby talk and I was told to “cut it out”, “grow up”, and “talk like a big kid not a baby”. I heard the first two from pretty much everyone. I mostly heard the last one in my special education class from either the teacher or the teacher’s aide. Also, when I was in school the lesson plans were supposed to be based on the IEP but neither mine nor those of any of the other students in my class actually were. What the teacher did was to write up the lesson plan in the Bank Street Writer word processing program on an Atari computer for her oldest student and copy it once to the floppy disk for each student in the class. Each duplicate of the file would have the name of the individual student and the year. At that point minor changes would be made to each individual file based mostly on grade level. Specific diagnoses and medical conditions were not really taken into account for any of the students in that class in the public school that I attended. The teacher was clearly aware of the diagnoses of the individual students, though since I ofter heard her refer to one female student as “Asthmatic (followed by her first name) and referred to another student in my class as “Autistic (followed by his first name)”. She would also use the word “autistic” when she talked about me with other teachers. This happened often enough that the other teacher that she often talked to would ask “Do you mean (name of one male student) and she would say “No, the other one”. She would sometimes use actual names when she did this. Back then a student’s right to privacy was not really recognized given that she would use actual names when she complained to other teachers about her students. In short it’s important for parents to be aware of the personality type of the people who will be working with their kids. Also making sure that individual lesson plans are actually individualized is an absolute must. Also, when I was in school I was given vision and hearing tests but they often did not properly adhere to any standard (as far as I know). For example, when hearing tests were administered the volume was often very different for each individual student. Therefore some students were falsely diagnosed as hearing impaired and others who actually were fell through the cracks. Luckily my hearing was in a normal range so it didn’t affect me aside from having an extra hearing test from a doctor that was not actually needed. On the other hand, the vision tests were another story. All the way through grade school because I was in special education I was assumed to be illiterate when the nurse was told that I was in special education. Therefore I was not given the eye test with letters. Instead I was given the other eye test where I was asked to say if the red dot is inside the box or outside. Needless to say that test is not very meaningful. There’s a fifty percent chance of passing that test with your eyes closed. The bottom line is to make sure that the tests given in the nurse’s office are properly administered and adhere to some standard. If in doubt about Simon or Ezra’s vision or hearing at any time in the future have them tested in these areas by a specialist. I found out in the second half of Freshman year in High School at age fifteen that I needed glasses and the ophthalmologist told me that my nearsightedness and astigmatism are so severe that this should have been picked up on no later than when I was in kindergarten. He also told me that I likely needed glasses even before that age. For the moment this pretty much sums up my observations on this.

Thank you this is a great video, I’m sorry you had to go through so many schools just to find a good one, it sounds like you have found the right one that’s wonderful, I pray that Ezra will grow and progress. Talking about the gagging? One thing I often get is a congested nose especially first thing in the morning, this makes me feel very uncomfortable and feel sick. My nose blocks because of allergies (dust might allergies) and for some reason lying down over night makes it worse, so first thing in morning I’m all blocked up and cant breath? Maybe Ezra has allergies that could be blocking his nose and down throat thus making him gag and be sick? Just a thought.

I had a crazy principal in middle school! In preschool I had behavioral issues that almost got me suspended! I am definitely much better now! 1. Banned jackets from 8th grade students because 5 kids broke the dress code rule! (during a time when we really needed them) 2. back in 7th grade a fight broke in the 8th grade hallway and somebody screamed gun… Everybody was running into the classrooms and apparently we were running over the principal’s office! (the whole grade got in trouble) 3. I was going around the 7th grade classrooms returning lunchboxes and when I left one of the classrooms a kid pulled out an airsoft bb gun and had a planned school shooting (He was detained in the office and kicked out for 2 weeks) 3. On the last day of 8th grade we were all in the gym celebrating and stuff until two girls sneaked up on a teacher and silly stringed him! We were all in trouble (The teacher that got silly stringed was okay with it… but the principal wasn’t because she saw on the internet that we were planning some fights in the bathroom! and she explained that she was not afraid to expel all of us! 4. Got put on an hour lockdown because a kid wanted to kill himself. this was during promotion ceremony practice!(Also 8th grade) Good times!

Number 11 is prepare in plenty of time for transitions. When in came time for my daughter to leave school she was not told all the options because she was high functioning. I later found the best option for her, after a spell in a group that specialised in preparing disabled young people for adulthood. However, before she could avail of it there was a pandemic. It would have been helpful if that option had been put on the table while she was still at school. Do your own research on how to prepare them for as independent an adulthood as they can have.

I think the hard thing for me in school was the loud fire drills that we had in New mexico. I remember on March the 2 1998 I was at Jefferson Middle School and the speaker came on saying they were going to be testing the fire alarms and the sprinker system. I remember when that happened was i did not have headphones during that time right when the alamrs went off for a few seconds I felt like really scared like i wanted to leave. I remember me and my ea Charity we were going to the football field at Jefferson Middle School and like man you could heard that loud sound and sometimes you feel like your sometimes trapped One thing i wish the schools had was a speaker voluem thing on the speakers to tuwn down the sound on the speakers they could hurt your ears.

I am currently going to a Adult transition program and it’s for after you graduate high school and it’s for special needs and I have special needs, I have autism and I wander off a lot and so my mom was telling my teacher that I was wandering off and she recommended that I get supervised by a 1 on 1, I also have noise sensitivity and the textures of sort things I don’t like, I also get disoriented very easily and so that why I have a 1 on 1 at all times with me, I also get overwhelmed and overstimulated very easily and i also with my noise sensitivity and any sound bothers me and the one on one gives me a sensory toy to help me get calm and relax and I also have coordination issues and my one on one helps me walk so that I don’t fall and it has really helped me in this program and I also have my IEP meeting tomorrow so I’m curious about they are going to say but thank you for sharing this and I hope Ezra has a great time at his new school😎😊

My experience with school has been a weird one cus I'm adopted so I was moving around alot and it was hell . When I was 7 I was put 2 years below the year I was serposed to be then I moved again but that school was worse there was suply teachers ALOT and I wasn't diagnosed till resantly because they fort it was trama not asd . I had alot of emotional out bursts ALOT and the only reason why it stoped was because I banged my head against a wall till I stoped being annoyed..... That worked till my head stared bleeding. I'm now in year 10 school is still not nice . I'm in a mainstream school with alot of people and I get overwhelmed alot but I have to mask that I'm struggling. All of the tips are realy accurate ❤

Is Ezra's new school a public school, or private? We have no public schools in Spokane that provide that level of assistance. If private, who pays for it, and if you don't mind sharing. What is cost. Sounds like a great school. Happy for him and your family! Wish we could find one like it for my 5 year old level 2/3 grandson.
@7Aheadfamily
@7Aheadfamily 3 ай бұрын
It is a private school. And insurance helps to pay. Sorry there are no public schools in your area that help like this. Our public school around here will take Ezra on the bus and he will have fun, but he also doesn’t really learn much since all they are really doing is babysitting. It’s not the teachers’ fault, they just don’t have the funding for 1-on-1 help

Have you tryed introducing Ezra or Simon to any sports, they could enjoy something like soccar? Also my crazyiest experiance in school was where I was in year 3 and was having a sensory related melt down and my LSA absolutly lost it, pinned me up against a wall, spat on me and screamed "Just because you are autistic doesn't allow you to behave like this" She was promtly fired and I am sad becuase other than that, we had some great memorys together.

Hey 7 ahead I'm A high school junior and the social environment is extremely toxic / bad with very disrespectful & defiant students , about 99.8% of them are entirely ghetto , ratchet , delusional & downright a complete waste of my life . Unfortunately its mandatory for me to go through high school in order to get anywhere else later in my life it sucks to have to put up with that hellscape prison . The vast amounts of derogatory remarks , profanity , violence , fights , etc in the students is why my school is a level 1 . Its not like I can transfer to another schools because many in America are just as bad . I live in west tennesee so maybe its just that area . The teachers / substitutes are just as laid back as the students most times making things worse . Do you have any honest advice / methods on how to deal with the bad social environment and get through high school without having the urge to take my life cross my mind alot ?

I’m so sorry that you are in such a bad situation. If you are having suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a professional. At every school there should be a psychologist that you can reach out to for help. I would recommend trying to find a friend who lifts you up whether that’s a peer a teacher or a librarian. ❤️❤️❤️

Not every autistic child qualifies for an IEP, especially if they appear to handle the regular curriculum. A 504 (ADA accomodation plan) can be helpful. There are lots of differences between the two programs.
@7Aheadfamily

Every autistic child should have an IEP if they want, even if they simply want the teachers to know about their diagnosis. For teachers, The simple knowledge that a child your class is Autistic makes all the difference.

Just curious why is the number always 12
@7Aheadfamily
@7Aheadfamily 3 ай бұрын
That is a good question. It all started a long time ago when we did our first 12 signs video. It was a random number because I just thought of 12 signs. Then it did really well. We noticed that when we did three signs four signs, nine signs and seven signs it wouldn’t get as many views. I personally have no idea why the videos that have 12 signs do so much better, but if it does better than more people will see it, so you’ll probably end up seeing even more videos that say 12 signs 😊

No school nor school staff will ever care and nurture a child as wholesome as a parent does, simply because both the school & school staff do not have blood relations with your child. One can't have high expectations thinking that the school and its staff will treat your child as if they were the biological parents to your child.
