I'm a bit confused in this lecture......why isn't the 35N downward causing a moment if it is perpendicular to the x axis? I'm thinking back to the wrench example where the max moment is perpendicular, so I am confused! Can someone explain please?

As the distance has to be perpendicular to the force, you imagine the force to be on y-axis and take the distance there from the z-axis, which is dcos30°.

Not sure if some of others cannot follow this video like me...( Dr Hanson is awesome it's my issues cannot follow the video!) There is probably a simpler way to do it. We can calculate moment of AB and AC and plus them together, this is the resultant moment which is 20N.m. Then we can get the same answer of d.

is the moment about the Z axis dcos30 because Z is technically the K and we want the distance along the x away from the axis? I remember you said for the horizontal we always use the vertical length away and for the vertical we always use the horizontal length away. Please correct me if I am wrong. Your videos are a lifesaver for my class.

I think you are recalling a 2D way to solve for moments when you speak about the vertical and horizontal distances. What you need to find the moment about the z-axis, is the perpendicular distance from the LOA (line of action) of the force to the z-axis. By extending the 50N force till it crosses the y axis, you can then draw a perpendicular distance to the z-axis. This distance is dcos30. Hope that helps

Not a huge fan of this method. It just confused me more and it seems you can only use it when you are given the Final Moment Magnitudes. If you are not given the Final Moment it does not see like you can get the Moment. Or at least i did not manage to use this method on a different problem and succeed
