Robbie your canal vlogs are some of the best on KZbin. I think I’ve binge watched all of them now. 10 years ago I navigated from Thorne via Keadby down to Stockwith on the Trent on a 20ft Springer with a dodgy 10hp outboard motor: all in all a terrifying journey. Then down to Torksey and on to Kings Marina in Newark where I was stranded for two weeks because of flooding. Not put off, still want to live on a narrowboat, this time on a big one. Loving what you do! Looking forward to the next instalment!

Robbie, Yes get a factory cap and make sure the surface the rubber disc sits on is clean so it seals tight. Also replace the thermostat. If that engine cools by canal water you need to clean the intake strainer and make sure it isn’t blocked. There may be chunks of old impeller bits inside the mixer as well. It’s a bitch but you may have to flush the block. Days work but better than losing an engine!

came to your vids after seeing the BBC4 series and wondering if you have covered this area too. Live locally and have only cycled along here having discovered it existence from the Scunthorpe Doncaster train ride. Even keen railway local buffs were not not aware of the slinging bridge. very brave of you to attempt the Keadby lock down from Torsky Impressed with the quality of your productions and the excellent local knowledge of your places visited,hope future BBC series will cover some of the places from the excellent Collins Notts,York area? not a boater but from always fascinated from a young age by the canal infrastructure and craft.

Eh up Robbie, I have watched hours of footage you have produced and enjoyed every minute and moment, but I loved this one , I was born in Keadby and loved to see how much it has changed over the years and believe me it has changed , the slide bridge where the railway is moved has been there a long time , I used to ride my push bike down the old railway line and over that bridge to deliver papers to Dolly ( can't remember last name , it was 1970s) at the swing bridge I remember as a lad Dolly used to open and close bridge for boaters , barges etc , and we used to fish the canal there a lot from Keadby to Kirk Bramith wides , great to see the old stomping ground and how it has changed ,!! thankyou for your vlogs I love them .

The little disk in the middle of the cap is what lets the water return. Your problem is somewhere else maybe the thermostat. Put something in radiator that inhibits rust, it is your engine's enemy.

Nice little trip Robbie . If you have any trouble with a radiator cap it should be replaced immediately , it can also not be building up enough pressure to work properly and also the thermostat may be suspect too . Good luck with the rest of the moving trip :-)

Thanks for the better video of the railroad bridge in action, that thing is cool! As for the radiator cap, if you can monitor the tank level it should be easy to figure out. Check the tank level as part of your starting off checks and note the level, photograph it if you can so you are sure, after cruising for a while check the level again and it should have gone up, after you moor up for the day let the engine cool until it is cool to the touch, at that point the tank level should be back to where it was when you started cold. If the overflow tank is not working as it should, it is likely the cap, but check the hose to the overflow tank and all the connections on it for leaks, if the tube going to the overflow tank goes into the top of the tank it should have a suction tube that goes below the water level, check that tube for cracks and leaks as well. If the overflow tube goes to the bottom of the tank check that there isn't sediment in the bottom of the tank blocking the tube. If the tube checks out good try replacing the cap, they are inexpensive enough. I have seen factory pressure caps go to the junk yard still working fine on 25 year old cars, and I have seen two month old caps fail. Honestly if the last time the cooling system was flushed was over three years ago or is not known a good cooling system flush couldn't hurt. Good luck.

Hi Robbi No doubt that you have corrected the radiation cap? But a tip to test the cap and if its function Is working put cap in a glass jug (pyrex) And pour boiling water into the jug and watch the cap and see if it moves slowly If it moves on the spring it's ok if it doesn't U need a new one. Take care and stay safe John. S.

The swing bridge as you came into Thorne is always open ... it was the main crossing point coming from Stainforth/Hatfield until the flyover was built in the late 60's / early 70's. Between this bridge and the lock was the site of Richard Dunston Shipbuilders - now housing - they built tugs and small fishing ships which once launched (sideways into the canal!) were taken, via the canal/Keadby/Humber to be finished at the yard in Hessle. Spent many an hour in school holidays help to open/close the lock and swing bridge - all manual in those days!

Great local info there, love it. Although I have to mention the bridge is often closed - if you saw the other video I made about Thorne you’ll see the Swing bridge is closed - was actually frozen shut as it turned out! I lived there for about 6 weeks last November and crossed it on foot many times during my stay. 8^)

there are 2 valves on a rad cap . the large rubber allows water under pressure to go to the expansion tank. the brass valve in the centre allows water to return to the radiator from the expansion tank when the pressure in the rad reduces due to cooling

I know this is over a year after the fact BUT if anyone is looking now, a proper coolant system cap keeps the system pressurized which allows the coolant to remain liquid above boiling temp. Fun fact; inversely if you place water in a vacuum chamber it will boil off without the application of heat.

Good one Robbie, really enjoyable. You look to be in great spirits, despite the long day. Heard of, but never seen this stretch of canal before. Hey, you mentioned the girls. They need a hand, teach them to go through locks quicker (grin). Also a bit of news from this way. Now, you must remember seeing my friend Steve's boat at Chapel. Well 2 or 3 weeks ago he was moored at 'cow pat' that's on the bank downstream of Chapel. You may have noticed it on your trip. 2 gin palaces when past at full speed. Not only crashing his boat into the bank, but broke his steering. Luckily he told me it was an easy fix as it's cable. Tried to video them on his phone, but never having done it didn't press record. He said he knows the boats though, just didn't get the evidence. Look forward to more.....have fun 😁

You can get different water caps they have different pressures. You will need to look up the correct pressure cap for your engine. You may need to know the engine make and number to get it spot on!
@rbagrizzly
@rbagrizzly 6 жыл бұрын
In the center of the cap should be a separate valve to let the water back into the cooling system. as it cools the psi becomes less in the cooling system to draw water(coolant) back in from the overflow. This is all dependent on a good seal on the cap.

@britannia-foundry
@britannia-foundry 6 жыл бұрын
Regarding your pressure relief caps I found this explanation on google: What is the main purpose of the radiator cap? As the vacuum builds in the cooling system, the second function of the two-way check valve comes into play. At a predetermined vacuum, the radiator cap allows coolant to be sucked from the reservoir back into the engine. If there is sufficient coolant in the reservoir, no air gets into the engine. So by the sounds of it you just need a new cap because it should not leak at all under any circumstances.

There is another little valve in the center of the cap.. that let's the water back.. you can see it in the video. . Give it a pull with you fingers. . Might just be overheating a bit.. check the seal on the cap up inside where it clips on.. if that seal is damaged any expanding water will leak out round the cap instead of going down the expansion pipe

The coolant set up. With cap like that excess water under sufficient pressure to overcome the cap spring pressure will exit via the cap (unless the seal in the top of the cap is spectacularly good and the reservoir is not pressurised in any way). Once it is past the seal I see no mechanism by which the water would be forced into the header tank. Nor does water in the header tank have any way to return to the engine past the radiator cap seal. In fact it would just drain out of the top of the cap which has minimal sealing. There does seem to be a small hole In the sealed part that may be supposed to handle this. Three possibilities occur to me. One is that the overflow spigot is intended to simply over flow to below the engine as in many older vehicles and you need a collection tank low down beside the engine (without the possibility of reversing the flow). The second is that is that a specific type of radiator cap the allows flow in both directions is required. Third and by far the most likely. The header tank and/or it's plumbing is blocked up so that surplus water/pressure can not escape that way. Check and clean as needed. In the interim, and post any fix, keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Overheating can kill an engine stone dead in a permanent fashion.

The problem you are having is the rad cap. You need a new rad cap the seal is failed. What is happening is the water heats up expands and get pushed out the small pip to the reservoir tank then when it cools it pulls the water back into the system. if there is a crack in the rubber seal on the rad cap it push the water out the pipe and the top of the rad and then when it cools it sucks in air. Then when you go to start the ENG again when it cold there is low water in the system and the water pump stops working as it pulling air from the top of the rad When you check a cold rad the water should be at the top. in the other video it was not at the top. As for the spring part of the rad that is for over heating steam and should not be messed with. Hope this helps. I had the same problem with a car, in the middle of winter. It was -20C and the car was over heating and no heat from the vents or the rad. (You just have to love living in Canada and the cold or be nuts) Look a

A key ring on a boat, without a float on it, is a disaster waiting to happen. Lou, get a float on those keys!

Hi Greg. Great point, you’re not wrong. You can aslo keep them attached to a key chain. Which is what I did in this video. Because they aren’t Lou’s keys. They’re mine!

not to be critical but you probably need to drain the cooling system and put new coolant in.

How far did you travel in ten hours ?
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 6 жыл бұрын
I actually got that wrong I think it was something like a 14 hour day but that included the travelling at both ends of the day. I think it was 15 miles (as mentioned in the video) in about 8 hours. How's that.

totally the wrong cap type I reckon - blocking the overflow pipe, or maybe the wrong cap pressure relief rating for the engine.
@FiddlingwithmyWhistle

Yeah.... looks like the wrong cap...
@davidfisher3142
@davidfisher3142 6 жыл бұрын
The cap should block the overflow pipe until the temperature rises to a point where the expanding coolant is allowed to escape when the pressure rises to a point where the spring loaded seal in the cap is lifted. When cold the radiator should NOT be filled to the top of the filler neck but slightly lower to allow for expansion. The spring loaded cap allows the boiling point of the coolant to rise above 100 C without boiling off.

Wow Lou makes you some good looking lunch there! Hope it tasted as good as it looked... A little bit of salt on those eggs would of been good for me. That's bc I'm a cheep date... lol... Yes she takes good care of you.. hehehehe!! I'm a really cheep date @ the pubs. Bc I don't drink. I'll have a Dr. Pepper though. Then I'm happy go lucky. But I'll also have some fish & fries with that DP PLEASE! That would cost you the price of a beer on tap & have change in ya pocket. I don't know bc I haven't had a beer on tap since 1993. They use to be $1.50 USD & that was high $$$ back then. I think it was $3.00 for a pitcher & $1.00 shots witch butter nipples was my shoots back then with Bush light. I drank lite back in the day bc I only weighted only 97 lbs to 103 lbs in 1991 when I had my 2nd child in 1992. I was little. But don't worry I've put on a little weight since then. 26 yrs later I weight 177 lbs & in 2 mos I lost 30 lbs by giving up soda & only drinking tea now. All bc a test result came back as a fatty liver so I went from 196 to 177 lbs in 2 weeks. I'm so happy. My legs are not swelling anymore & I'm felling really good here lately. Yeah!! So I might get to get rid of my Metformin bc of a high sugar levels. Then that's one more pill I call help save my liver. Wish my luck, bc I need all the wishes & prayers I can get. Keep CRANKING on & be safe, Chris

Colin I’d love to but I can’t help thinking you wouldn’t be able to adjust the volume if that’s what’s bothering you. I have already had the valve adjustments seen to - they were fine by the way - by a Lister specialist. I saw it all and even filmed it - yet to be released. It must have been my fault with the microphone too close to the engine so you presumed the volume was greater than it actually is.
