The father and son time was most important! But the following testing methods are covered in this video:
No Start, Severe misfire, Injector Problems, Cold Start injector Problems, Compression issues.
We also did a spark test, RPM drop test and a quick head gasket test.

These videos are such a double edge sword. Brilliant memories for both you and your son and it makes me happy to see. But, also never having any form of male in my life growing up. It's only as I entered independent adulthood where you become aware of what you've never had. Witnessing friends with their dads and uncles. Seeing people you know with their kids as they grow. To videos like this with someone you don't know personally, but have great respect for. Just the act of making and spending that time on/with their kids = equal parts happy and grieving. No one's perfect but your a good man Paul!

Way back when I was a green tech, we had a dude come in the shop with the rotary engine out of an RX7, in pieces in a box, and wanted to know if we could get it back together for him. "Uhhhhhh................... no." o.0 This is great stuff. I am a proud father today. My youngest son graduated from automotive school this morning, and he is going to work for Subaru on Monday. Eventually he will return to the nest and take over my shop.

Have a look at the Start Injector Time Switch. Unplug the Start injector Time switch which is next to the Water Thermo Sensor. It will have two connections. Read between the them (STA STJ). Internally the switch is connected to ground to provide the ground source to the Start injector as well as a ground for the heating coils in the switch Below 86degf : 20 - 40 ohms Above 104degf : 40 - 60 ohms STA goes to the ignition switch and one side of the Start injector, STJ goes to the Start injector the other side of the Start injector. STA goes to a bimetal switch in the Start Injector Time Switch sensing the coolant temp. As the engine warms up it should deflect away from it's connection to ground.

I'll be doing a quick video on this with my son when we troubleshoot it. This is good information and long forgotten. I used to teach on these in early 2000 when we still had many of these systems on the road (cold start injectors). GM used one on their early 2.8 or 3.1? Same system. Some of the Bosch systems had them too. The CIS system had it. Hated those things! Thanks for posting this!

12:45 i have been in that trouble before with an old SEARS compression tester that I wanted to rebuild because i was on a budget. What I found it´s that all you have to do its take a normal schrader valve from a tire and just remove the spring from inside twisting it couterclockwise until one tip of the spring comes out and take the rest with some needle pliers, that way you dont have any resistance and you will get it working brand new! i have compared the results with another known good and both readings were basically the same.

make sure the head and block surface are both flat. since overheating loved to warp the heads and if previous owner kept driving and using block/leak sealers or let it leak, it can erode the block away at the leak area leaving a low spot. that's how the typical toyota owner treated them back then.

It's running now. Keep it that way. Drop the oil and filter. Use a break in oil or a break in additive. That engine needs ZDDP. We're the stock injectors low ohms or high ohms? Most peak and hold were under 5 ohms. I recall the 944 turbo Porsche had the highest ohms peak and hold. When replacement injectors were high ohms, over 12. Resistors were used. They worked but not perfect. Not sure why Toyota runs a resistor box?. Love seeing father son projects. I did many with my boy.and girls. Always great memories and they will remember for the rest of their long life. Hopefully one day they can do the same with his kids. Good luck with the build.

Nice work on finding the wire to the resistor wasn't hooked up. I had an old 83' Scirocco that had a cold start injector but the system was vacuum controlled which I think is totally different from that setup so I'm basically learning this type of car as I never delt with one before as you two work on it. I miss my old Scirocco but the electrical system was going out, VW wouldn't give me any support in getting new parts, and even things like buying the battery had become a problem as most places no longer sold the battery that went into the car. I finally got rid of it went the engine harness caught fire and I had to perform all types of work-a-rounds just to get it moving again. I even had to re-soldier the board in the computer box as due to the shorting engine harness things melted on the board. I miss the car but will not get a new one as the company simply doesn't support their customers and even went as far as to tell me to buy a newer type Scirocco and I thought to myself if your not willing to support me went I already spent a lot of money with you why should I trust that you will support me with another car when it gets old? So, that was the last VW I will ever own in this lifetime. It's sad though as I purchased four VW's and that was how I was treated when the car I loved got old. Anyway these old cars are simply built better than today's cars as the computerization is messing things all up as most of the time a sensor has gone out and you have to check multiple different computers to tract the problem down compared to the old days when it was a bit simpler as you just unplugged something to be able to see if it was working or not.

Hey danner check your cold start time switch on the front of the timing cover . Well it’s on the front of the intake . beside the coolant temp sensor. Usually if your cold start isn’t working or spraying all the time it’s usually the problem from my experience.

There is a diagnostic connector, I think on the driver's side that you short the two pins on and count the check engine light flashes. I think it's a round plug over by the ignition coil, if I recall correctly. It just hangs out over there not connected to anything.

They sell beck arnley injectors on rockauto for $45 a piece. But your best bet is to send the original injectors in to be flow tested, cleaned, new seals and pintle caps and retested at witch Hunter performance. They do an amazing job rebuilding injectors with spec sheets. And it's only $23 each I think. They did all 4 on my 22re and the cold start injector as well. Some were as high as 9% off on cc/min and now they're all within 1% of spec. And 22reperformance has all the OEM parts you'll need including that pcv valve and grommet. They're awesome. I've ordered a lot of parts from them over the years. Highly recommend. Be sure to run through the sensors on these old engines to make sure they're working right. Calibrate your tps, your idle speed screw, timing with the advance disabled and I found through testing my MAF (different MAF because I have a pickup) was not within spec according to the FSM. Truck ran well but once I replaced that MAF with a $100 Amazon Chinese one that was much closer to the FSM specs, it gained a noticeable amount of torque and throttle response. I was able to drive in a higher gear than before at lower speeds without bogging the engine. Great engine.

Why does everyone have trouble stabbing a distributor? Bring the engine to 10 degrees before tdc. With distributor near the number 1 plug wire(with correct firing order) With the key On, turn the distributor in the direction of rotation. When you come up on the leading edge of the reluctor the coil with spark. Snug down the distributor, the engine will start and the timing will be very close to where you want it.

How many videos do you see that after "Listening for the compression stroke" get it wrong , as in 180* out . Take the oil cap off and look at he no.1 intake rocker closing , This is the start of the compression stroke every time . Was that a big Pffft or a little exhaust pffft ?
@ScannerDanner

Listening is not what I was doing. My thumb was covering the hose and only compression will make it pop off. The exhaust stroke would do nothing. This is a fool proof method. You can't always see the #1 cylinder rocker arms. In fact most cases you can't.

Hello, after longtime....😊 Here, 12V Vs 7V... I have one Super CONFUSING VOLTAGES READINGS on door opened or closed status. For example, in i20 2011 India version without LCD display on instrument cluster, the voltage at any door switch is SOLID 12V when door is closed, and immediately drops to SOLID 0V when it is opened. Now, in today's modern car like Toyota Glanza and Toyata Taisor which has LCD display, and for the same situation, when door is closed from opened, the voltage remains at solid 12V, and after about 20 secs, the voltage drops to SOLID 7V. As soon as door is opened, it changes to 0V. Now, when the door is closed again from opened, the voltage immediately rises to SOLID 12V, and stays for about 20 seconds, and then only drops to 7V. Now, why is this voltage drops delaying from 12 to 7?? What's the purpose or significance of this delay in voltage drops? Why not immediately changed to 12V from 0? Why 12V, and then later slowly to 7V???

@@ScannerDanner yes it is a signal wire coming out of the BCM. It senses the door open or closed status. It is a ground side switch. With door closed, it's 12V, door open 0V. But when door is closed again, it's 12V and then after some 20 seconds, it drops to 7V. What's the significance of using this capacitor? Also, after dropping to 7V, when the lock or unlock button on remote is pressed, the voltage rises to 12V and then after some time, it again drops to 7V....

@tnamen1307 i understand that part. I'm asking for more information on the switch itself. There are modules in the doors these days too

@@ScannerDanner no such module i found on the doors. All the 5 door signal wires goes to the BCM on the left side of the co passenger under the dashboard. The switch location is normal as seen in old vehicles like i20. Its a normal push button only.

How can you bond without a scope and pressure inducer. I think you want the kid to suffer....... Love the old school pre odb. Firing order got me on a 81 fairmont. But I had the misfortune of believing the manual.

These were legit concerns. The ebay injector plug ends were the problem and the engine was put together by a tech school kid (should have clarified how nervous I was about that)

@ScannerDanner Hey Paul, good stuff as usual. BTW, Eric O just did a video about injectors. If the OEM is charging $150.00 per injector and the chinesium knock is a set of 4 for $30 bucks. That should be an immediate red flag.
