yeah that paint is totally awesome, honestly I'd love to ride this bike.

Nice build. Love how you intermingled the voiceover/explanation segments with the fast-mo musical interludes of you sloppin' on the grease, all over artfully shot but straightforward close-ups. Sweet paint job.

Nice. Everytime I have a mountain bike I end up selling it or donating it. I think I have one now that I may be able to keep, if it fits. No seat, flat tires, no brake pads, rusty chain but good tires. The front has been holding air overnight. If I get busy today I may be riding it before sundown. Its an old Cannondale. Thanks for the tips.

Great restoratiin. I know how difficult it is to get the right parts for the project. But it looks cool. Best wishes from Germany
@anthonylanemusic5 жыл бұрын
I had one of these! I was going to do a restoration, but the seat post was welded into the frame, and no amount of soaking in penetrating oil was going to budge it, so in the end I parted it out and put the frame in a skip. Such a shame as they're nice looking bikes. Good to see yours came together so well. I've never seen those magnum tubes anywhere else either.
@MonkeyShred5 жыл бұрын
Shame that! Sometimes you have to weigh up whether the fight is worth it though :(
@anthonylanemusic5 жыл бұрын
@Robert Trageser I've come across this method before, but I don't have anywhere I can safely use anything toxic like that without risking my dogs coming into contact with it, so unfortunately, it had to be the skip. Even on a really rare or high quality frame, it's a fairly drastic solution.

Yeah, love this, nice one. I'm just finishing up a build, 87 (I think) Muddy Fox Courier. Got the retro LX mechs (the blue ones from 99ish) with new Deore hubs and Vs and a nice new Sugino crank, and old DX thumb shifters. Cold set the stays and running it 8 speed. Planning to use it as a heavy duty tourer and also something to explore the local trails and mountains on. Been wanting another old MTB frame since I got rid of my old 91 Hardrock, I toured and commuted on that and it never missed a beat. Can't believe how much the thing weighs, though. Also have a Cross Check, which I thought was a tank, but this thing's on another level. Might have something to do with the 2.15 rubber I jammed in there. On that note - a video on cold setting would be interesting if you ever fancied it.

It is something I have to do. I've got frames ready, I just need to clear some space before I build another bike... ahhhh.

Nice! Would make a great long distance touring bike. I love the paint job on that one. I might be mistaken, but i think it has an oversized 1 1/8" steerer, which would make it easly convertible to ahead. I built a similar bike in 2017 using using 1993 Trek 930 frameset, 1995 Deore LX derailleurs and levers operated with ultegra 8 speed bar end shifters with flat handlebar adapters. I rode it 8000km to Kirgyzstan without any issues at all. The rear derailleur is still running strong on my friends bike. Old LX was a great groupset.

8000km long trip? Nice one! You are right it has a 1 1/8" headset and would be easy to convert too!
@Shoichigo Жыл бұрын
Hello from Japan. If Kathmandu's original derailleur is M550 LX, it's probably a post-1990 bike. Because Shimano says the LX was released in 1990.

I worked for Halfords back then and the MTB line went : Quattro Comp ( 531/XT ) Kathmandu ( 501/LX) Waikaloa ( 501/Suntour X1 there was a step through version as well, but I can't remember it's name as I only ever sold one) Krakatoa (4130 main triangle, 300LX) Later they introduced more models, and the following year's Quattro Pro ( replacing the QC) came with Suntour XC Pro and SE brakes and the final version being a 531 E stay bike with a flexstem and a return to XT. In my opinion the last good ones were around 92/9, some of which were made by Saracen. They even came with pots of touch up paint. Much better bikes, made with much more care than the ones that followed. The marketing clearly took cues from Kona in some of the naming and GT / Kona for some of the paint jobs. There were earlier Carreras too - the Quattro I think being top of the earlier line with Mountain LX. Lovely resto job there :-)
@computerbob064 жыл бұрын
I have my 88/89 Quattro or Quattro 2, with just about everything original still on it - including the Mountain Lx set (with black crank cogs and silver arms)! Still ride it everywhere, built like a brick outhouse - good old CroMo!

If my memory serves me right the IG stuff was a bit later. I haven’t used the later 90s gear too much.

whats the rear OLN for old frames like this?
@MonkeyShred5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think It's 130mm although I'd have to check.
@tomvghn53115 жыл бұрын
It would probably be 130mm for the 7 speed hubs that they used at the time. Old road bikes that were 8/9 speed had 130 spacing as well. I just spread a MTB frame from about this era (with the Sheldon method you linked, which worked great) from a shade under 130 to 135. Surly still does the 132.5 thing.
@tomvghn53115 жыл бұрын
@Robert Trageser 'nope' www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html See also here www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=124869 No need to patronise especially if you're not correct. Late 80s/early 90s MTBs were very often 130mm and then 135mm became more common around the mid-90s when 8 speed became more popular. Some 7-speeds were 135, but that wasn't the standard for quite a while.
