Great review as always. I went to see the Sportster S in person and I guess for me at least, it felt like a really small bike. You can’t beat the classic Harley set up in my opinion.

To me it looks small but when I sit on it it’s more like a normal bike. I’m also sitting on motocross bikes and bikes much smaller than the Sportster so maybe that’s why.

Great video, really appreciate the in depth review! I have the exact same Lowrider S, bought it in June ‘21 and absolutely love it for all the reasons mentioned. I added a set of Vance and Hines Eliminator 300 slip ons and it sounds awesome! It’s set up for 2 up riding, upgraded grips and pegs all HD, and bought a set of Kuryaken LEDs front and back, makes a huge difference. I LOVE my bike and glad you do too!

I WILL TAKE the Low Rider S ALL DAY LONG. This will be the 2nd bike in my stable. it will a life time dream after having four older basket case sporties over the years. 2018 I brought a Kawasaki Zed 900 naked and she fills my liquid cooled speed medicine for me. hopeful that a Low Rider S has my name on her soon.

My favorite comparison yet. I was stuck on waiting for the sportster s to come out or buy the low rider s, which I did end up doing. I bought a black 21 fxlrs and I don't regret it, I think I wouldhave anyway but I just wanted to compare the two. That sportster s is a nice bike, packed with features for 15k but I plan on doing a 131 kit and much more on the low rider and I think I'll 100% love it then instead of just 95% Also that sportster comes with cruise, heated grips, adjustable levers, its 500lbs compared to 680lbs and all that other stuff that you have to pay alot extra for on the fxlrs. I think it will sell really well to people coming to the brand. I hope anyway, it's a nice little package minus the sound 👊

Great comparison between the two of them. Since I ride a sport touring bike and never rode a Harley but more than 10 of my buddies have Harley’s, I’d probably choose the Sportster S. I’m not one to customize bikes so after market parts are not important to me. I like the newer instrumentation and tech stuff. You’re right about the gas cap though. It should have a locking gas cap. A more padded seat might be necessary for longer rides over 4 hours.

It depends on the type of riding you do. If you're into going fast and hard cornering, you go with the Sportster S. If you're looking for the long cruise, classic looks and comfort, you go with the Low Rider S. To me the Sportster looks confused with that flat seat and forward controls. It doesn't look comfortable. I may be a bit bias though since I own the granddaddy of the S series and the last of the Dyna lineup. The 2017 Low Rider S.
@skeetersaurus6249
@skeetersaurus6249 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, and see a 'redundant lineup' with the Sportster S (to counter the Indian Scout Bobber) that just wasn't needed...the Fat Bob 114 is all Harley needed to do that! The Fat Bob is WAY BETTER in looks, sound, ride...than the Indian Scout OR Bobber...and with that Indian Scout full rear fender, it really is more the Low Rider's comparison (again, no comparsion) than the Fat Bob...but that Sportster S? It's using a de-tuned Pan American engine, on a 1983 Honda 'Big Wheel' chassis-seat-tank-fender, and a Fat Bob front forks-headlight...to try and compete with (in my opinion), rice-burners...and the 'intended market' for the Sportster S is shopping for 'sub-$10k bikes' that can compete in the 600-800cc cafe racer groups running the Green Dragon (or street racing)...I just don't see them dropping the cash, not in America, anyhow; for a Sportster S.
@goochma
@goochma 2 жыл бұрын
@@skeetersaurus6249 I absolutely agree. I mean don't get me wrong I do hope Harley has success with this bike. But with the release of the Sportster Nightster 975 I think Harley might of just outshined it's own Sportster S with Nightsters more traditional yet modern offering. But I guess it all depends on the individual. Some may choose the more sport like appeal of the Sportster S. While others will love the more traditional looks of the Nightster. But in the end only time will tell.
@skeetersaurus6249
@skeetersaurus6249 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's just me...but I just don't see the Sportster S going anywhere...other than a '1-buyer discount'...it has every-single-thing that no one really wants 'rice-rockets' for, and nothing that they DO want them for! I mean, you can buy into 30-more horsepower for half-the-price, and ride two people (if you think 'rice')...and the first time someone drops $20k on a Sportster S, loses a race, or two, or ten...to bikes that cost half-that, they'll be back with a 'slightly raced' Harley. It does NOTHING that the Pan American can't do...and can't do what the Pan American can do. As for the 'appearance'...LOL...imagine it without the front forks or rear wheel...you know what you are looking at? A 1983 Honda Big Wheel! The Low Rider S, it's classic, it's clean...and with the Milwaukee 8, it's going places. The Fat Bob 114 is too...but the Sportster S has the same problem A LOT of products have today...it's designed for a customer that JUST DOESN'T HAVE that kind of money to put into it, TO BUY IT NEW! (and as an 'old goat', I'm not buying it new, when it looks like that, to give them a 'well-depreciated product' they can buy 2nd-hand to 'pick up for a steal')...so, there is that!

It’s not really fair to compare exhaust sounds against a traditional a big-twin engine, but hopefully there will be an exhaust that sounds good on the Rev-Max. The Indian Scout can sound pretty good, and V-twin Ducati’s sound a lot more beefy next to an inline-4 Japanese bike.

Like this comparison, great points, cheers. The Sportster S is a good start but over priced personally. It's got some cool stuff, the display, liquid cooled engine etc. I think HD can make a good modern performance line up with what they're trying out on the Pan America and Sportster S. But they gotta stop with the crap pipes they seem infatuated with, should have learnt after the FXDR design weirdness. They appear to be keeping the performance Softail Dyna range (for want of a better phrase) with the Fat Bob, Lowrider and Street Bob all having a 114 now which is awesome for the old school feel and look. They've left the Tourers alone which makes sense as the bring in the big cash. Be interesting to see what happens in the Softail Cruiser line up... I heard the Heritage is going to be re-classed as a Tourer, the Deluxe has already gone, the Breakout is dubious, the Slim has been axed, only really leaves the Fat Boy on it's own. HD cutting the fat big style.

Snipes, where did you get the name? 160 front, 180 rear. Did you ride the Sportster S? If you do for a hard ride you will find the brake doesn't fade. You are spot on with the suspension travel, to me the only detractor of the 1250 S. As far as range, I'm getting 110 to 120. 42 mpg my last tank, measured by gals/miles. The seat on both are not very good, the 1250 is just worse. It will be my first replacement. The riding position on the Softail and doing a full tank on it, was tough on me, probably as bad as the 1250. I've owned a Low Rider S and currently own a 1250s. Both are wonderful bikes, as you said the Low Rider is traditional and the 1250 is not and in my opinion, I wouldn't even think about 2 up on the 1250s. The best option for pegs is to put on passenger pegs and stretch out on them, putting your legs back. I disagree with the sewing machine comment, it's actually very mechanical sounding. TBR makes a exhaust, I personally am not looking to change, as you described, it's louder but not a good sound. I have 3 bikes, a RG CVO, Slim, and the 1250S. If I'm going 2 up, I grab the RG, by myself the 1250, and a leisurely ride the Slim. I really enjoy the slim. As for the after market, Corbin makes a seat and tail tidy, TBR a exhaust, HD only has a few items, seats, pegs, windshield, passenger backrest. Your review is pretty spot on coming from a guy that has owned both bikes. The closest thing I driven to the 1250S is a 2008 Ducati Monster 1100 I had.

Well, you know my opinion, because I commented on your last video. I went with the Sportster S 1252cc Revolution Max dual over-head cams; 121 HP , 94 torque... this bike literally leaves that M8 in the dust boys and girls. The dual over-head cams have 40 deg of computerized dynamic adjustment... and as such, never need adjusting in the shop. The Revolution Max engine IS the frame! The bike is lite, nimble, quick, and strong. Just to give you folks a heads-up... this is the future of HD. We have had very mild days here in Minnesota , so I'm still out riding mine (went with the midnight crimson) and I absolutely love this bike; literally, it makes the M8 low rider performance look like a rock... and the tech on the Sportster S brings 21st century appeal and in my opinion is second to none... except the Pan America (which is the same). @Throttle Blip , I have the engine guard ordered for my Sportster S. This is where you mount the highway pegs on the RH1250S. Also, don't judge the two-up seating on the RH1250S until you "SEE" it... its fantastic! I must say though, that I won't be adding it to my Sportster... its just for me! Between the M8 low rider and the Sportster S, there is NO comparison... Sportster S beats the M8 LR hands down in every category. PS edit: Also, you don't EVEN need another brake on the front end; reason being that the Revolution Max 1252cc engine has full IMU computerized engine braking! 40-50% of the braking on the Sportster S is the engine itself! Its fabulous! Sport mode has VERY aggressive engine braking! PS edit: The fat tire on the front is an illusion; it is playful and responsive... reason being that the aspect ratio on the front tire is very high... the center of the tire has a high peaked parabola ... so it performs like a thin wheel. PS edit. Oh, and the head lamp is NOT what it looks like On the bike, its how well the rider can see at night RIDING the bike... the Sportster S head lamp is second to none.. Brilliant LED high and low beam! marcus

I just rode the sportster S today... being a road king and road glide 114 rider last couple years... so totally out of my "comfort zone" . needless to say ...it was fucking mental lol. it is insanely fast bike. its like having power of the crotch rocket with torque of a Harley. It pulls like a train even in the regular road mode. I tried sports mode in 2nd and 3rd gear only and it honestly scared the shit out of me. And I do triple digits on my road glide quite often...

I can't help but laugh at the people that say the Sportster S doesn't have adequate brakes. It has a near 14 inch rotor, with a radial Brembo Monoblock 4 piston caliper with braided lines and a Brembo radial master cylinder. The rear setup is similar with a smaller rotor, a Brembo 2 piston, braided lines and a Brembo master cylinder. That's a wicket setup, and you would really have to be beating the piss out of the brakes for them to fade.

100% correct. If there is one thing Harley has done well for a long time it's the brake setup. The only real reason to upgrade most of their brakes is just for the bling factor. Otherwise they are solid even under pretty harsh conditions.

Harley seems to be holding out on options while still charging a premium. With the huge increase in prices over the last few years it’s hard to justify their price tag. More so with the road glide and street glide. Don’t get me started on the dealer markups either. I get freight, setup and document fees, but I’ve seen 4-8k over MSRP at a dealerships in Florida and Oklahoma. (Mid to high 30’s for a road glide special and high 20’s/low 30’s for a basic road glide.). It’s insane. In my opinion, HD is going to lose customers to other brands, regardless of their heritage and brand loyalty. If they keep prices reasonable and offer more included features they’ll never have to worry about their competitors. To me it makes sense to forego huge profits, but retain and increase your customer base. More so in these current economic conditions.

How many times have you ever felt your brakes fading on anything? That happens to people on race tracks where pro racers get them roasting hot and boil the fluid. The only way you'll be doing that on the street is if you're dragging your brakes down a mountain with a 400 lb woman on the back seat. That said, I like the look of the dual brakes myself. Looks sporty. Old HDs used to have dual tanks, that's surely why they kept the look. The company tends to try to maintain the "heritage" and all that. LR is a far more useful bike, though not the way it comes off the showroom. The Sporty has a modern, peppy engine, but the package is complete useful for anything more serious than bar hopping to brag about your peak power spec. HD puts that into something more standard with 17" wheels and passenger/luggage accommodations and keep the belt drive it could get interesting. They already have me just because of their low maintenance. Something a little sportier but as low maintenance would have a niche. For mature people who could give a rat's ass about peak spec nonsense, such a bike would probably sell really well. Nothing else like that on the market.

I think it looks good, would look better if they got rid of the bronze accents in my opinion.

Looks like it came out of a cartoon. Fugly is too nice of a word. Low Rider S looks magnificent. What a motorcycle should look like. Majestic actually.

S stands gor Softail. Looking at the Sportster it has concealed rear shocks so is a softail. Old Dyna was not a softail so S differentiates the old and new version of the Low Rider.

The lowrider s is geared toward Harleys traditional (and dying off) customer base. I owned a 2016 lowrider S, and now own a 2021 Lowrider S. Old school buyers like me do NOT want to see any digital bullshit or metric style turn signals on our bike. The Sportser S is very clearly geared towards the younger generation. The only derogs on the lowrider S is it has the worst kickstand ever put on a motorcycle. And the footpeg position is awkward (compared to the 2016-17 lowrider S). I'm only 5' 9 and the footpeg position is even awkward for me. If your over 6 foot, You will wants forwards on the low S.

Lowrider s is for me. Reasons as you stated two up riding chatting up a female friend at a drinking establishment good luck taking her on the sportster s. Also you can get bigger saddle bags for the lowrider s great for girlfriend purse and beer Pack's.

This is nothing more for Harley to make more money by not having a seat and pegs for the passenger. Imagine the motorcycle $15,000 dollars already. Harley Davidson motorcycles are over price!

I have owned legacy Sportsers in the past and was looking forward to the Sportser S release. Honestly the Sportser S looks like an epic fail to me. The miniscule amount of travel is ridiculous. The bike does not lend itself to any type of aftermarket exhaust or seat that won't look awful. Forward controls are stupid on a sport bike. Single front disk brake is criminal. I hate the electronics (probably a plus for millenials). That license plate support (don't even get me started). Epic fail on Sportser S I'm a Harley guy, but if I was in the Sportser market, I would buy the Indian scout.
