The hybrid, in tandem with the huge, onboard generator is a real game changer. Aside from it's many job-site, and campsite advantages, it will also be able to provide power to small travel trailers in transit, while topping off the house batteries at the same time. Boon-docking with a truck that has a 30 gallon gas tank, and a 7.2 kilowatt generator will be like nothing else out there. Pulling into a campsite with a relatively full tank, along with a couple of additional Jerry-Cans, power will no longer be a limiting factor when it comes to how long you are able to remain on site. Especially if you have a solar equipped travel trailer with lithium house batteries. You'll run out of food, water, and just about everything else, before you'll ever run out of power.

I don't think Gabe was right about the Q7 timing chain replacement cost of $1,000. Here's what I found on Google: The average cost for an Audi Q7 timing chain tensioner replacement is between $2,409 and $2,958. Labor costs are estimated between $2097 and $2646 while parts are priced at $312. Estimate does not include taxes and fees.
@kennyclark2844 жыл бұрын
That’s right it’s estimated to be $5,000+ and not just the timing chain on many cars nowadays. You have to pull the engine to change a water pump costing $5,000+ on many many cars. Oil must be changed often and kept level. Mfg recommendations of 15.000 miles between synthetic changes can be a contributor to this problem.
@davidm57074 жыл бұрын
My question is, is the Audi engine an interference engine like a Honda's? If not, it's worth waiting until it breaks to replace it. Since it may never break. Anyway, if you can afford a Q7, you can afford the repairs.
@g-mang-man79244 жыл бұрын
Q7 reliability is really not so good...what's worse are the massive expense of repairs as the vehicle ages. Timing chain replacement is around $5,000. I am a service manager at a national used car retailer, and every time I see these being sold....I think of the repair costs...a headlight is $2,000 if a parking light led goes out....I will keep my Toyotas thank you.

Few things about the RAV4 Prime. I'm amazed the tax credit wasn't mentioned initially when you first stated the price. Thankfully Gabe mentioned the credit later in the discussion, and he didn't even mention state tax credits. These are definitely factored in when the company sets the MSRP; knowing that the majority of customers will be eligible for these credits. Price for the base version in CA would be **under** $30k after CA and federal credits. It's also eligible for the HOV lane pass in CA which is priceless to a lot of drivers. I don't understand why you're saying this is "a little more" horsepower and fuel economy. It isn't. It's a lot more. It's 1.4 seconds faster 0-60 than the hybrid version. RAV4 Hybrid is ~40 mpg, the prime is 94 MPGe when driving on electric only, which may make up the lion's share of a driver's miles. The PHEV is cheaper to fuel, cheaper to maintain, and produces far fewer emissions. . Toyota has said that converting all cars to high gas mileage hybrids makes sense and is possible with limited battery supplies, but these Prime versions get significantly higher MPGe than hybrids because the majority of their miles driven use electricity. In the RAV4 Prime, they're doing this with only an 18 kWh battery, instead of the 50 - 100 kWh batteries in BEVs. Battery supply is limited and currently takes a lot of energy to produce larger battery packs, so this should allow them to produce far more PHEVs than BEVs with lower production emissions, thereby replacing far more ICEs until such a time as battery supply increases significantly and gets cleaner. . You also said that this is great for short pickup/dropoff situations.. ummm, no. It's good for all commuters. 42 miles of electric range is 10 miles more than the average driver's daily r/t commute in the US. That means the entire commute can be made using electricity. For those with longer commutes than 42 miles, this will significantly reduce the amount of gasoline they burn and how often they have to fill up. With workplace charging, you can effectively double the electric range of the vehicle on a daily basis. Being that it's an efficient hybrid, it still gets great gas mileage when it does use gas.

@michaellopour74094 жыл бұрын
Agree - don't buy an "old" powertrain if you've already tested that particular engine/transmission combo. I'm intrigued about the hybrid and diesel versions. As with many others the decision for consumers probably won't be whether these are "good" options or not, but rather they are worth whatever the price premium is and that's the analysis we like to get from CR.

A 100k maintenance is a long time. Generally, I'd say look around at different prices for how much that maintenance would be. If you are buying a new Audi you realize you are paying more. And a 1000 dollars for 100k driving isn't huge. All cars have a costly 100k maintenance schedule. If you are worried about price on maintenance prob. Best to get a non German car. At least not if you are in the USA where it costs more. And not all shops have an interest in dealing with Audi. My friend had am Audi and seems very common that most shops hate working on them. As they are unnecessarily complex. But, there are shops out there. They just will charge MORE for all the work and tech it takes to work on them. The dealer will always cost more. That's my take anyway. Feel free to disagree, if you want. I'm not a mechanic. But I talked to my share over the years.

Why do they say "you subtract $7500 from the purchased price of $41k and it ended up in the low $30k" I thought you subtract $7500 from your income which means you saved the amount of taxable income from the $7500. So, if you are taxed at 25% you save $1875 and not the full $7500...right?
@paulstein92584 жыл бұрын
You are confusing tax credit with tax deduction. Your calculations are for tax deductions. The only glitch is low income people, will not be getting much of the credit. Of course at this price, they won’t be buyers. People that are self employed, and keep their income low by omitting income, will also miss out. Summary. If you pay at least $ 7500 in income taxes, you will save the full $ 7500.

To answer John's question more fully regarding electric heating and cooling. Electric cars using the more efficient heat pumps use the same system for cooling as heating, just like a home heat pump. However, in a gas car the heat source is waste heat from the burning of gas. So in a gas car the heat is "free". To transition a gas car to a heat pump for heat would actually result in a loss of mpg as the system would be using more electricity than a conventional heater. Now, using a heat pump for AC in the summer on a gas car might result in a very slight mpg savings but that would be given back in the winter.

I am not into Pure EV, it just not for me. once I decide to do a long distance drive like to one I do almost every year, Brooklyn NY to Montreal QC, I do not even want to spend 15 minutes, 45 minutes to a hour just waiting around for an to be full or partly charge to continue my journey. I want to get from point A to B with little or no stop to get to where I need to be, and a HV or PHV is just the perfect vehicle for me with no worries about range to getting off a more direct route to my destination just to get to tap off with electricity. The RAV4 HV is ist only my list for my next replacement that will replace my 2001 Corolla.The RAV4 PHV I would love to get too, and that is even more perfect, but it just close to my yearly income.
@roger18184 жыл бұрын
Brooklyn to Montreal is about 600 km (just under 400 miles) and is about a 6 hour drive. First of all, BEVs are starting to get that kind of range and it will become more common over the next couple years as battery technology improves and their prices continue to fall. Secondly, most people will want to stop at lest once to pee on that length of drive and you can easily add a couple hundred km of range while you do so. Thirdly, even if you do have to wast 15 minutes charging on the drive, count it as a small price to pay for the 12 hours a year you save from not having to stop to fill up the rest of the year if you can change while you sleep (15 minutes a week times 50 weeks).

It's louder, but should outlast the vehicle.

A couple of observations. The fold down shifter on the F150 is very clever and you wonder why nobody else thought of that before once you've seen it. Second, Toyota is spot on in its philosophy. We are likely 10 to 15 years away from the time when charging time and a fully adequate charging infrastructure make pure electrics the way to go for most people for general use. When I'm on the road the last thing I want to do is be anxious about whether I can get to the next charger that's convenient to my route and then when I find one twiddling my thumbs at one waiting for the charge to complete. Hybrids are for real life where people just want to get in the vehicle and go.

Toyota does not like adopting all new technologies. Great example - Apple Carplay/Android Auto. Just starting to adopt it now even though all other manufacturers have had it for years. Why would they focus on electric cars when they developed the new hybrid car in the rare time they took the lead in technology? Also, I note Jennifer replaced her 2012 with a 2019, 7 years later. My last car I bought in 2006 (Saab 9-3 by GM) and sold in 2018 - with 191,000. My 2013 Subaru Legacy H6 now has 100,500 on it and plan to keep it through 2025 at the very least. Huge batteries are wasteful on many levels. Best is a small battery vehicle feeding train infrastructure. The US is backwards on public transit, so here maybe a plug-in hybrid or plug in-fuel cell vehicles make the most sense. Even autonomy won't change the economics, buses would simply become more important.

You send me to your website to read your first impressions of the RAV4 without telling me first that I have to pay? Lame.

Only interested in electric and gasoline. ...No Diesel

Plugging your car in every night is already an inconvenience, especially if you live in an apartment or park your vehicle on the street. Is 37 miles of pure electric driving really worth it? Not to me, it isn't. P.S. With the exception of that hideous Mark E, Ford really seems to be hitting it out of the park lately. I had just about given up on them when they announced they were phasing out sedans but now I'm reconsidering.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want a hybrid or a electric vehicle? I just don’t find them appealing.

Have you ever driven a Tesla? That might change your mind. For hybrids, not going to the gas station as often would probably be something that you would appreciate as well.

@@treads2595 I've driven my buddy's Tesla S P90D. It's cool, but not $95,000 cool. Fit & finish worse than my Mustang GT. Thin seat cushions. I'd rather sit in the back seats of my Mustang instead of "sitting on the floor" in the Model S. I have owned a hybrid, and respect their place in the market, as well as electrics, but I believe the auto/oil industry purposely "dumbs down" their potential range so they're not as appealing as they can be.

It honestly doesn’t look any different than the previous gen. The tech sounds great and all, but it just looks like a lipstick on a pig. It’s almost like how Chevy did the last generation of the pre refreshed Silverado
