Over the last few years, Mazda has been re-thinking their SUV lineup, enhancing off-road performance and even adding battery-electric powertrains; all without sacrificing style or the on-road performance the brand has long been known for. And that leads us to this CX-50. Its all-new from Mazda! #Mazda #CX50 #MazdaCX-50

Why? It slows the car down significantly, and the gas mileage is below average compared to its rivals with a CVT or a more advanced conventional automatic with more gears. The acceleration would probably improve greatly even with just one more gear, and the MPGs would improve as well. Mazda isn't choosing to use this dated trans because they want to, it's because they have to.

@@fp5495 yeah but what are we asking for ? 4 more gear for 1-2mpg with a annoying shift behavior. The transmission is not a normal 6 speed that Mazda uses it locks up a 5 mph and feel direct as a manual transmission or dual clutch. I’m not saying it’s perfect but for all the compromises it’s really not that big of a deal.

Saw one parked at the casino last night. My jaw dropped. I am 53 yrs old and have owned two Mazda 3's and a CX7 (turbo). They were all great and sporty running machines. I am looking for a small vehicle (like this CX-50) that isn't too "girly" or grandma's grocery getter looking. As I watched this video, it seemed MotorWeek is kinda hard on this new CX-50...to me, 7.2 seconds to 0-60 is plenty fast and the braking distance is exemplary for this category. So, don't bash Mazda...their soul is on Germany's Autobahn and actually listen to what Americans want.

As potownrob says the reason the turbo seems expensive is that it's only available on higher trim levels. Not sure why everyone bags on the 6 speed - the 8 & 10 speeds are there pretty much to mask the inadequate engines most makers put in their cars now, and to appease the fuel nazis. I'd rather have something that winds out a bit and holds a gear a bit longer. 8 and 10 speeds are constantly changing gears in normal driving - it can be an annoyance. Get on the throttle - they jump down 3 gears - as soon as you let off, they are back at 10. Don't care about a couple tenths of a second - much rather have something I want to drive. This thing sounds awesome on the road and doesn't appear to be slow at all. BTW - most other road tests have the 0-60 much lower. Car and Driver had it at 6.6 seconds and praised the acceleration.
@broeheemed32
@broeheemed32 Жыл бұрын
You can say that again. All of it. I had the displeasure of renting a 2021 Camry with the 8-speed, and you're spot on about the acceleration. At about 50 MPH, I swear it went from 7th or 8th (I didn't bother counting gears) to what felt like 2nd........ then wouldn't let go until it redlined for a couple seconds, then dropped to 7th...... or maybe 6th. Who even knows? If every car didn't top out with a buzzy turbo 4, all those gears wouldn't be necessary at all. Even most pickups are all about buzzy 4's now....... shameful. It's a dark day for cars.

I have this car, I have driven it 15,000 miles and I will tell you about the serious flaws, which surprised me. The first is the windshield wipers not working properly in heavy rain. They seem to take a 1-second break, which is very dangerous while driving! The second disadvantage is the wide windshield pillars, which greatly limit visibility when leaving an unmanageable road... The third disadvantage is the LED headlights, replacing the bulb would cost $30, but it can't be done here, you have to buy the entire headlight for $1,000!!! The fourth disadvantage is the lack of illumination of the glove compartments, no heating of the mirrors, and very awkward switching on of the air conditioning (no visible indicator light). The fifth disadvantage is that, according to the manufacturer, the car has 260 HP, but for me it has no more than 180 HP in normal operation... It only starts driving after switching to sport mode. quite good.... For me, a car that costs 50,000 should have better refined details, although the finish inside the car is very satisfactory... .......... ----- I forgot about one rather serious fault of the car... Even though the car has 4-wheel drive, it behaves in corners like a front-wheel drive oversteer... You have to hold the steering wheel very hard to avoid falling out of the corner during quick maneuvers, although it must be admitted that the system is very precise and responds well in extreme conditions... I'm talking about speeds of 70-100 miles per hour...... If the drive was distributed 60% to 40%, there would be no need to take the steering wheel out of your hands...

Below 55 it is nice and quiet. But 60 and above there was a strong higher frequency sound that seemed to come from the rear. Not sure if it is the solid torsion bar suspension or what, but a long road trip with that high roar would be NO fun. Salesman said, but it was designed for the off-road folks. It is marginally more capable than a CX-5, not really bowling over the off road market. Silence or seriously mute that roar and I would own one in a minute. I find it odd that Mazda is keeping the CX5 alongside this, but disconintuining the 6. I feel like this could've shared a nice co-existence with the 6, whereas it makes the CX5 a bit redundant. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the CX30 replace the CX3? I like the styling of it, although I think in some ways it looks a bit awkward compared to the CX30. It definitely looks more like a wagon than an SUV, like how the CX30 feels more like a hatchback than an SUV, to the point where I feel like the term "SUV" has really just become a trendy way to refer to wagons. I've had positive experiences with the CX30, since a friend of mine has one as his daily driver, and from what I see here, the CX50 seems to be more of the same. Still, I think it sucks to see the 6 go. I've had equally good experiences with the 6, since that same friend's mother has one as her daily driver, so I feel that cutting it out of the lineup is a foolish choice on Mazda's behalf.

You had me at “drives like a Mazda”. If you are shopping for a cuv, make sure to test drive a cx5 or cx50 and you will understand why reviewers always say that phrase. I finally saw a cx50 on the road, and it looked sharp. I want Mazda to update the cx30 along this design theme.

I want Mazda to paint those awful huge swaths of black plastic on the wheel well arches or get rid of them entirely. It ruins a not bad design and makes it look super cheap.

Hmm... I have a 2019 CX-5 Signature and the ONLY thing on this that seems better is the pano roof. I'm sure the next gen of CX-5 will have it. I wouldn't buy a Mazda that isn't made in Japan, so I'll wait.

And not one mention of road noise. It is NOT superior to the CX-5. I drove both back to back and twice the noise in the CX-50. Also a much harsher ride. As a plus CX-4 built in Japan. After driving I bought a CX-5. I got rid of my RAV4 as the noise was driving me crazy. Have owned 3 RAV4’s. I love my CX-5. Fun to drive and a lot quieter than the CX-50 and RAV4. Test drive each before you buy and you will thank me.

How is this vehicle really different than any other soccer mom CUV you find on the road? I test drove the CX-50 because I thought it was supposed to be more off-road capable than other CUVs but I wasn't very impressed. I'm sure mom's and dad's toting kids to soccer practice might like it.

I absolutely love the look of this Mazda inside and out. But, I’m sure like many others feel, the performance off the line is disappointing for a crossover with such impressive power figures. Mazda needs a new automatic and hopefully will put that into production with this vehicle soon. With something more modern it should easily post sub 7 0 to 60 times.

This is built upon the CX-30's frame, NOT the CX-5. The interior layout is the same as well. It's basically a CX-30 with a beefed up Subaru-looking exterior trim package. The CX-5 isn't going anywhere, that's MAZDA's #1 selling vehicle. The CX-5 is also fully made in Japan. The quality sure shows it. I wouldn't trade a Japan-made vehicle for a USA one in a million years. They can keep it.

Were you not listening? The plant where this is made is a join effort between Toyota and Mazda. Now I'm not a fan of Toyota simply because they don't sell anything I like - but there is no denying they know the right methods to build a solid / reliable car. I'd also rather buy something well designed and implemented - and then built in the US. We have done it great in the past - and can do it again. I will be looking at one of these this week for sure.

Looks fantastic inside and out but 7.2 seconds 0-60, and 15.3/90mph 1/4 mile in 2022 is very slow. Seems almost like the HP/TQ numbers are inflated. Maybe they were only running regular unleaded which drops the numbers to like 220hp/310 tq, but even then, it's still slow.
