After going to an Apple Store nearby to compare the new keyboard and the last generation one, I know what he refers to. It is something to do with the extra tilt angle the new keyboard has provided. Strangely, if you just leave both keyboards sitting on the desk WITHOUT any iPad attached and you try to do the same among of poking or taping the top portion of either keyboards, both don’t move at all or I should say the base of both keyboards are heavy enough to stand still properly without any complaints or any usability issues. So it must be the extra tilt angle. Remedy just like people have commented is to add some weight to the bass of the new keyboard. For Apple, I think adding extra weight to the base is not something they want as it would affect the portability a bit. After all, when the new iPad Pro has been made much lighter, nobody wants to add extra weight because of the keyboard.

Thanks for pointing out that dealbreaker. I didn't notice it myself, having used the new Magic Keyboard with the iPad Pro 13 inch for a couple days now. The flipping over to the back never happened to me, so I didn't notice. After inspection, I found that I did not push hard enough on the iPad screen to have this problem. And I also made the mistake of having my palms on the keyboard most of the time; when touching the screen I only lifted one hand up, and the other stayed on the palmrest of the keyboard. After I corrected both of my mistakes (I now make sure I don't use the palmrests and push harder on the screen), it flips over for me too, and I can return it. Thanks.

I’ve not noticed any stablity problems with touching the iPad screen. Mine is very stable and does not ‘bounce.’ I’m not experiencing anything like you are presenting. Maybe the unit you picked up was looser? BTW, the Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard Case was available in my Apple Store the same day of 1st availability of the iPad Pro M4 (May 15) for $229.59, $70 less. I bought it and the Magic Keyboard and tested them at home, liking both. But, I went with the Magic Keyboard because I use a lapdesk sitting on the couch a lot with my iPad and the kickstand flap of the Logitech case would easily slide over the upper edge of my lapdesk, allowing it to fall off easily. The solid base of the Magick Keyboard did not and provided much better stablilty. So, I went with it! Thanks for the great review. I’m appreciating the 6 or 7 good differences you pointed out before you went to your rant.

Almost every problem he had with the keyboard was something I felt the new keyboard did right. Love the big trackpad, love the switch to metal since I HATED HATED the material of the previous version. You could clearly see all the marks on his old keyboard when he picked it up. Sadly the outside of the keyboard still has the same material. I do find it weird that the keyboard rocks back and forth but I hardly ever have a problem with it. When I touch my screen I always place my other hand behind the case / tablet. It’s a reflex I’ve always with touch screen computers which is what this iPad basically is.

My new M4 iPad Pro keyboard for the M4 iPad Pro is perfectly stable and does not sway or rock the way yours appears to rock back and forth in your video. Mine is 100% stable and rigid with no problems at all. I use the touch screen as often as I use the keyboard, so it is super important that the screen remains stable and rigid on the new keyboard. So either your desk is not level, or else maybe your new keyboard is faulty. You show that your hinge does not sit flush on the desk, whereas my hinge sits perfectly flush on my desk. I love the new keyboard, it feels super comfortable and natural, wonderful trackpad and function keys, everything is completely intuitive.

My M4 iPad pro w/ Magic Keyboard doesn’t sway as seen in the video but with some force can be rocked back a bit. On the whole the hinge seems much stiffer over the previous gen. My M1 iPad with its Magic Keyboard won’t fall completely over but exhibits quite a bit of bounce with use, similar to what’s seen here but without the need for much effort at all. It’s likely do to what to me, feels like a less stiff hinge. Mine also has the rubber coating on the palm rest areas peeling up quite significantly and from the corners. So in my experiences at least, hasn’t had the same durability as his. Willing to believe perhaps I’m an outlier. Very hopeful the new metal body of the new keyboard holds up better.

@ajtrek38735 ай бұрын
I have the new iPad Pro 13 Keyboard case and I’ve found that the tipping only occurs at the very extreme angle of backward tilt for the iPad Pro 13 screen. That angle is quite honestly too far back for my viewing. The first level of backward tilt doesn’t have the tipping effect with normal contact with the screen (i.e. Apple Pencil or finger). I had to push with much more than normal force to get the keyboard to tip (at the angle I prefer) and get the reaction as described in the video. So in conclusion IMO it really depends on the degree of backward tilt that one uses with the Keyboard case.

Not that you have a choice: you get a new M4 iPad, your choice is either to get the new MKB, or get none at all. The weight and balance of the iPad/MKB combination changed, and hence the old MKB no longer attaches to the new iPad Pros. The electrical connections are the same, and probably the digital protocol, but the positioning of the magnets changed. It is a bit wobblier, particularly if you have it on your lab. Otherwise, the new MKB is great. Although, I missed the ESC key a million times, not many apps support it. It is going to be nice for vi, though.

Interesting, that’s not a big problem on my 11” Magic Keyboard (M4). It might wobble just a slight bit on a hard surface but not like yours. The 11” is likely weighted differently or maybe you got a keyboard with fit/finish problems? Kinda would expect you to have already double checked that knowing your background in reviewing products. Here is one benefit you didn’t mentioned, at least on the 11”. You can open it from closed, on a hard surface without two hands. Similar to a MacBook. At least you can until you get ready to tilt the screen back where you need a bit of counterbalancing weight. Much nicer than the previous magic keyboard overall IMO. I just don’t love the white/silver look as much this year, but i still think that is the better color to avoid all the grease stained look that the black model ends up with.

I don’t think the rocking is an issue. When you use it as a keyboard you have the trackpad that you should be using like you would on a laptop. In most cases, using the trackpad is much faster than lifting your whole hand and arm to touch the screen. Use of the pencil in that position is also ergonomically terrible. In summary, what you’re experiencing is not a ‘design flaw’, but the result of ergonomic misuse of the device. I’ve also found on the rare instances where I do use the touch screen it does not wobble anywhere near as much as you demonstrate - I’m just touching the screen, not poking at it like I’m trying to poke someone hard in the eye.

The model I was using was the 11" and it was on the new keyboard. I was drawing and tapping on the screen with the new pencil and didn't notice anything like this wobble. So either this is an issue for the larger size on the keyboard, he is reviewing a defective one (or something's wonky with his table), or the display at the Apple store is somehow doing a great job hiding this issue. I was drawing and tapping on the screen for about 15 minutes and never had any wobble or felt like it was going to fall over.

Hi Mobile Reviews! Great content and i have bought quite a few of the products you recommend !🎉 I have to totally disagree with this tippy thing though ! I have the 11 in version and it’s pretty solid. If I have to do a lot of drawing or poking with apple pencil or finger on the screen i usually just take the ipad out of the magic keyboard. But for typing on a flat surface it’s fine. The most annoying thing about this keyboard is the stupid sharp edge all the way around the perimeter outside edge on both halves of the magic keyboard . These sharp plasticky raised ridges are there I believe to protect the uncovered edge of the ipad to stop it getting dinged. It’s not such a problem with the screen half but the keyboard side cuts into your belly when you are lying on bed /sofa with the keyboard which is quite the case for a lot of users i’m sure 😂 My solution - I just got a very sharp kraft knife or scalpel and carefully cut the offending white ridge off all the way around the keyboard then sanded it smooth with 320 grit aluminium oxide sandpaper. It works a treat, so smooth and no more uncomfortable ridge cutting into hands or belly! As for protection the screen side is still intact so there’s that and if I go on holiday or to the office I always slip the ipad and magic keyboard into a soft envelope type case or into one of those padded jiffy bags you sometimes get from amazon. My instinct tells me the next iteration of this keyboard will have completely closed and therefore protected sides on the ipad (vertical) half and nice smooth tactile edges on the keyboard sides to aid user comfort .

I’ve been using the new Magic Keyboard with my iPad Pro and while it is a little less steady than the previous versions, this has yet to be an issue for me. If you’re touching it during regular use, it’s not that big of a deal. When using the Apple Pencil, I’m not using it attached to the keyboard anyway. Fair to point out, but the other improvements more than outweigh this minor issue to me. I’ve used the Logitech Combo Touch in the past, and it is way too bulky and not as premium as this. But it may work better for some people.

Countdown until someone more willing than me makes and sells a strip of material with adhesive that will stick on the back of that hinge making it touch the table when open.

Can the rocking be fixed by sticking a thin strip on the bottom of the hinge?
@Aiii835 ай бұрын
Yeah, added some small rubber feet to each end of the hinge and that’s fixed it for me. Apple should’ve caught this, but it’s an easy enough cheap fix, luckily.

It’s unflattering for Apple to need workarounds and jerry-rigging for a brand new product. Hope they can come up with a fix, either for the design or the production, whichever is the cause.

I forgive almost any small issues like that for the simple difference in quality and usability of the new trackpad. The old one was unusable in a quiet situaiton like you don’t want to disturb a partner - it was so loud. New one is almost silent, its a massive upgrade
@The12th_5 ай бұрын
Exactly the point I hated most about the old one! People in the reviews don’t mention it at all (besides the trackpad) or just say, ‘the keys feel the same.’ Well, to me, feeling and sound go hand in hand in this case, and since I finally got my hands on a new keyboard in a showroom, I like this keyboard a lot! It’s really close to the MacBook’s. On the other hand, the screen-touching issue mentioned in the video is a bummer. But with the old one, I was also displeased every time I had to touch the iPad. :-/

I just tap the trackpad instead of clicking it. Same as on the MBP trackpad. Come to think of it, I never really clicked the trackpad on my magic keyboard at all.

"I forgive almost any small issues like that " $300 keyboard for your tablet that makes the tablet experience suck despite it not having an actual desktop OS so you're EXPECTED to have ONLY the tablet experience..... Yeah, not sure why you're forgiving this or claiming it's a "small" issue.

@@JamesR624 It was exaggeration obviously but its still a big and not really mentioned benefit of the new vs the old. For me at least its been a big improvement over all from the previous one. Click trackpad, nicer palmrest, nicer keys. Its a tiny bit wobblier but if you don’t punch the screen like in the video you should be fine, I’ve had no issues on a table or my lap and most probably won’t. I certainly wouldn’t just not buy it without at least checking it out vs other options. And yes it is stupidly expensive. But the regular magic keyboard and magic trackpad are almost as expensive. Doesn’t excuse it but I’ll get a good 3-4 years out of this like I did the previous one.

The keyboard case was made for typing, and not writing or tapping on the iPad. So that rocking wouldn’t happen if you stick to main reason for keyboard, “typing”.

I love the old version and I don’t really need function gees because I know my keyboard shortcuts really well. The biggest upgrade they could do is if they find a way to let you also put it in portrait mode as well. They would never do it because Apple would never make something that looks that in elegant where the top of the iPad is poking out over the top of the back of the keyboard. But It would be really nice if the magnets let you do that.

Poor Monty has to sit through these videos. LOL Love your dog! Question: Is the previous keyboard compatible with the newest iPad Pro? I keep wondering about that? My only frustration with this keyboard is my palms as I type would touch the touch pad and would cause it to do things I don’t want it to. Thank you for the video! ❤

You can probably double sided tape a 2mm thick foam/rubber strip to the back of the aluminum bar to eliminate some of the rocking(making it level with the bottom of the keyboard)... but that would be pretty jank... I don't really understand how they missed this...

It’s interesting cause I’ve seen other reviews show that new one is less tippy when used on your lap then old one. I have old one and used anywhere other then table it likes to fall backwards due to weight if iPad. So new one not doing this is big plus for me. I’ve rarely ever used it on a flat surface.

The tipping screen is a non-issue for me. I use the touch screen constantly both with fingertips and the Apple Pencil and the device has never tipped back once as shown in the review. If I purposely punch at the screen I can force it to tip, but it never does so in normal use.

I was surprised that for this IPad release, when I decided it was finally time to replace my 2020 iPad Pro, I no longer had the desire to have the 13 inch version. Seemed redundant when I have a MacBook Air. Went with the 11in. M4 pro, and it does not share this flaw. I assume it is because it is a lighter weight device. But for anyone wondering, the 11in seems great for me so far.

@sidewinder30005 ай бұрын
Wow, this seems like such an unnecessary misstep by Apple. Have you tested this out with other magic keyboards, to make sure it’s not a manufacturing flaw in yours? It’s just so hard to believe something like this could be released. If it is the case, I hope that your video sparks a bunch of people talking about this, and Apple Modifies the design. In the meantime, I imagine that maybe it would be possible to cut some thin strips of self adhesive vinyl to create an ad hoc “shim”. I was seriously considering updating my first generation iPad Pro and magic keyboard, and now I will have to press pause until I hear about a fix. Thanks for making this video.

Can’t agree more on this new MK hinge design fault. I got the 11” version iPad Pro m4 and it is a bit unstable on no flat surfaces such as on lap or bed. When I was tapping the screen on my lap, the iPad tipped over and hit the ground hard. The corner of MK got dented.

Hmmm, i went to an Apple store today to try to replicate this and i found the gen 1 had more wobble. Weird. Unless Apple has magnets on their demo tables, is it possible that maybe you got one that had something wrong with it? I was totally expecting a noticeable wobble. I mean if you push it hard enough it will but no more than the old one which was there with the new ipad air attached. Also, i only tried it on the 13’s, so not sure about the 11’s. 0:45
