I bought my 2007 SR5 Hilux new, and have loved it all that time. About 5 years ago i was going to trade up, but the new Hilux wasn't that impressive and the price was crazy, not to mention the waiting time. So i decided to see how the battery and hydrogen market evolved. Toyota took a gamble on hydrogen and failed, because the infrastructure required wasn't ready. BYD recognised this and came up with the perfect solution, and then coupled that with a good looking ute with great technology. They've also got a good track record with the sedans, and have used that to set up their Australian service network. Consider the fact that they are selling the shark for less than cost, and that should help the 2025 shark hold it's value going forward. My old Hilux is still in pretty good shape, but in my mind the time to take the innovation leap is now.

Hi Felix, am also very curious about the apparent 2700kg of the BYD Shark and what it is able to carry. Like you, not out to be critical and merely devil's advocate more so. Joined the BYD Shark group yesterday out of interest and prospective owners are definitely motivated to run numbers too. Our full time touring Musso is 2110kg dry and when trip ready with ball weight she's 60kg off the 3200kg mark. That's with alloy tray and canopy rather than tub. And in speaking recently with another full time tourer (we're about to start the grain harvest here in S.A.) his DMax is also close to its 3200kg gvm with all necessary bits to support full time work/travel. By the time we calculate your solid estimate, plus add drawer system, packed 40ltr fridge, 20ltrs of water, a side awning, camp chairs and other camp gear for just a long weekend the potential limits of the Shark as more so a "weekend warrior" and less so full time tourer are drawn into focus.

Had 2x 80 series and 2 GU Patrols is various configuration, plus various hire 4x4s and loaner troopys. Build lightness. After day 2 you will regret driving an overweight whale. Alloy roo bar, no RTT, alloy rack. Can you get by without a winch, ie, use a Tirfur instead. No draws - just dont add drawers = unnecessary kgs. GUs had a surprisingly low GVM and with a steel roo bar, winch, rear step and steel rack, with 2x 100kg blokes + full fuel, on the weigh bridge in Alice there was only 150kgs legal allowance left, eg, the fridge + lunch plus a few beers, let alone everything else. Thus we legally had to tow a lightweight alloy box trailer. Just build lightness.

Awesome Review! Can't wait for mine! Couple questions.. 1. What happens when the battery runs flat/low.. does the power get restricted to keep up with the generator? 2. Does it come with tailgate seal kit. There wasn't an option to add it but looks like you got a bit dusty in the back so I'm assuming no? 3. Does the roof rack come standard with the lights? Thanks again! Keep up the good work :)

1. What happens when the battery runs flat/low.. does the power get restricted to keep up with the generator? -- the system will keep 20-25% of capacity. If you are on highway, just drive, the engine will recharge the battery automatically. If you are doing serious off-road trip, I suggest park you car and let the engine to recharge the battery for 30 minutes.
@peacemakermotion394916 күн бұрын
@@liuyangyang But what if it can't? or does the generator just rev up more and use more petrol? So basically im asking if the generator can keep up charging the battery while giving you full 320kw all the time until the petrol runs out? Thats great if thats the case..

I just want a vehicle that go forward/ backwards. More bling more problems. I’ll be interested to see when these things start coming thru my workshop with issues. Warranty means Jack, especially if ya vehicle is off the road for weeks/ months. New cars are money pits. Soft touch interior 😂😂😂, big deal, I’ll take hard painted steel thanks.

I'm lucky in the regard that I work from home, so I do way less klm than the average person. So it works in my favour because if/when bugs appear, I'll be able to book mine in and get it sorted before it becomes an issue. But yes, you are right, reliability is a big thing, I've driven the same hilux for 17 years. But I can remember my brother bought a toyota corolla back in 1982, he drove to a small country town and when we got out, two young men yelled out "Jap crap"! My point being that eventually Australians embraced Toyota, and there's no reason why BYD can't achieve the same status. Yes, some Chinese manufacturers have been bad, but I think BYD have already established a solid record, but I'm certain we'll see similar racist comments like we did for the Italians and the Japanese. Will history repeat, I'm prepared to take that gamble, and enjoy the ride.

I’m keen to know that as well. I will likely get one of those bullbars, but may consider the raid one of the big boi hooped one is made of full steel.
@nathankelly170816 күн бұрын
Hi Titan, I can at least let you know that moving from the road going tyres on our Musso at delivery to a slightly taller A/T (same width) tyre definitely had an impact on fuel economy. And in considering specifically the Cooper ST Maxx for our ute they are indeed a heavy tyre due to their ply rating and construction. A good tyre and kudos to BYD for the instant move to an R/T (rugged terrain for those unfamiliar) but any claimed range on the standard Shark will be reduced by tyres alone, let alone further accessories.
