After losing titanic's improved sister Britannic II in ww1 and its relative obscurity, they promptly reused the name for a small diesel ship
@dingydoedles
@dingydoedles 5 ай бұрын
Hey, maritime engineer here! In modern ships, you have things called 'bulkheads' in the inside of the hull. It devides the inside of the ship into smaller parts, so if the ship were to collide, only a part of the hull would fill with water. Unless there's an entire rip from bow to midship, she'll be able to remain afloat until reaching the closest port!
@LostStarzOfTheSky

Neat! Would the people on board be placed on life boats at any point in this process?
@dingydoedles
@dingydoedles 5 ай бұрын
@@LostStarzOfTheSky Not unless the ship is actively sinking. The captain will call out a general safety alarm, calling everyone out to the lifeboat with their life vests, but that’s just a precaution until they figure out if they can get to port safely. Fun fact, the titanic was actually a “sequel” to its first sister ship “RMS Olympic”. Olympic did collide with the “HMS Hawk” (another ship) but luckily didn’t sink, making the “unsinkable” claims even stronger. Thereafter came the titanic (who we all know) and lastly came the third sister ship named“Britannic”, who unfortunately sailed into a mine, being the second one of the three sisters, to sink. Working on all these ships was the maid Violet Jessop, who miraculously survived all three incidents and went on to be called “Miss unsinkable” (Let me know if I got any information wrong)

@@moonriverinc7896 German ships laid sea mines throughout the Mediterranean Sea. HMHS Britannic, a hospital ship en route to pick up some wounded from a Grecian port city, travelled through the Kea Channel and encountered one, which tore a gaping hole in her side. It twisted her frame and knocked her wireless cables from the masts. She may have survived as she was built to withstand 6 compartments flooded (which is a lot, as even modern ships today are still commonly built to withstand 2 to 3 flooding compartments). Sadly, there were open portholes due to the heat that let in excessive water, so she sank in 55 minutes. There were 30 deaths, most caused by the turning propellers, which prematurely launched boats could not avoid. She hadn't actually picked up the wounded, yet, so I can't imagine how many would have died if she were filled to capacity with soldiers.

Even if he did build a cruise ship named after the Titanic, they could never actually replicate the experience. Even 3rd class passengers had a better meal experience than what we're used to. 1st class had like 8-course meals. They had smoking rooms. They had huge ballrooms with furniture made of noble woods that can't even be commercialized now. There was SO much that any sane investor would deem unnecessary today. i hate it because of how far it's been taken, even i have been cancelled over personal grudges people had for me and i certainly do acknowledge when i do something wrong. half the time it's completely unnecessary, people have taken it way too far. it just became a vendetta thing rather than genuinely holding people accountable for problematic behavior. people lie a lot to make someone look bad or completely blow things out of proportion. conceptually and in many instances like this, you're right. it's a good idea in theory but in practice it's gotten out of hand in recent years. just adding in some extra nuance is all, not everyone who has been cancelled is a bad person it's a case by case thing by now.

@@mr.bingusthecat i'm no expert but i think the common knowledge aspect of it is that there was a combo of very poor decision making on the part of the captain, bad luck, the fact that they hit the iceberg from the side and not head-on (it was better fortified for head-on collisions) so it tore open a big hole, and this meant that watertight compartments inside the ship (intended to keep it afloat even if it was stove in and a few of them flooded) filled with water and bc they weren't properly sealed at the top the water overflowed as the ship tilted and flooded more than just the compartments where the hole was, so that it sank. also there were issues with the lifeboats obviously. but if op has corrections/more info they defs know more than me haha i just worked on boats for a while and this is what i heard

I was watching some documentary about the Titanic, and it suggested that the Titanic could have possibly taken the hit because it might have been a head-on strike in the beginning which it had been built to be able to take some if not all damage from, but their attempts to avoid it made it scrape and tear along the side, instead of supposedly just hit and rebound from the nose with minor damage, so there's that.

@@aeddiefarmerthe smallpox bit was actually surprisingly good considering how hard our accent is to imitate, but not only that, I’m way more stoked to hear about Clive than I think I’ve ever been. Mainly cause we get the chance for all of us to inform Danny’s fans that he’s a massive dickhead. Now that I think about it, Australia doesn’t get as much play on these channels as it should… only John Oliver covered the various Abbot weirdnesses, I feel like that’d be a fun cultural dive.

Honestly I would love to pay to experience a tour of the titanic at full scale, maybe stay overnight while it’s PARKED, view maybe a museum inside/historically accurate areas. That would be awesome. But actually take a trip in it? No. Absolutely not lol

As far as I’m aware it’s not in a replica boat, but there IS a visitor attraction (tour/museum/etc) for the Titanic in Belfast (just search up ‘Titanic Belfast’ to find it lol), which is in Northern Ireland and is the place where the Titanic was built!

The RMS Queen Mary is docked in Long Beach California (near LA)! Giant ocean steam liner, I think about twice the size of the Titanic? Built in the 1930s, and all that historic decor is still preserved. The boat was permanently docked there in the 1960s, and now operates as a hotel. They do tours and stuff, and there is a museum on board. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend checking it out!!
