Just had 5.29 Nitro Gears installed on my 2019 Tundra. It has a 2.5” lift and running 35” tires. Was very tired of feeling like I was constantly hauling around a trailer because of the weight & size of the tires. I almost went back to stock size but ended up having the gears installed and so glad I did. Now it feels like it did the day I bought. Holds 6th gear like it never did before. I can tell by the exhaust note that the engine isn’t struggling like it did before and always changing gears. If you plan on keeping your tundra and you’re running larger tires, do yourself a favor and go for it. Almost like getting a new truck all over again, way more fun to drive.

I highly recommend 5.29s. $1000 for labor and around $1260 for the gears. From what I am hearing here, and the other videos is that it's 5.29's all the way. Regardless of tire size or weight. If this will increase fuel mileage, you'd think they'd do it at the factory to help them meet EPA rules, etc.?

The thing is, factory Tacomas have much smaller tires, and thus need smaller gearing to be efficient. Once you upgrade to bigger tires you’ve got to change the gearing to make it efficient again. I ran 5.29s in my 98 4Runner, 4.88s in my LX450, and 5.29s in my 100 series Land Cruiser. All of them ran the exact same set of tires. I preferred 5.29s with the 35”s. They give a lot more control off road, power in the city, and the engine is barely working on the highway. Mileage was great with 5.29s. My GX460 will only have 33”s. A lot of people say I need 4.56 gears but I’m probably going with 4.88s based on my past experience. At 70mph it will sit at 2,000rpm which is not bad at all. The engine will be happy and it will hunt gears much less.

So I heard u say a manual 6 speed has a 4:30 stock ratio. I have a 2nd gen trd off road. I'm running 33s. U recommended going 4.88. If I were to upgrade to 35s should I go 5.29 like the people with automatics are doing or stay with the 4.88. Not sure what I have right now but its stock and I'm running 33s and it drives great.

I'm still torn, going for 4.88's or 5.29's, currently running 31.7" tires 265/70/17's with a RTT, and all my camping gear it definitly has some power loss..

scott17818 depends on how you are going to drive it. I drive a lot on the highway. Mine is 2wd, lifted on 33’s. I re geared it with the 5.29 and i love it.

@@BigRobskitchen mine is a LOT of in town, and highway driving, and I plan to eventually take it across country at some point. it is my DD, so I drive a whopping 10-15 minutes to work and back home 5-6 days a week, and the odd adventure every few weeks...I dont imagine I'll be going much bigger than a 33" tire, and a 2inch lift.. just ordered my SSO hybrid front bumper 3 weeks ago, and ordering my winch in another few weeks. both should arrive in time for install before my North Maine Woods trip in MAY..

@@BigRobskitchen I’m about to pull the trigger on the 5.29 gearing. I have 3” lift with 33” tires on my 2019 tacoma. I spend way more time on the highway than off-road and the highway drives are horrible with my factory gearing. How is the highway travel with your 5.29? Is your top end speed severely limited now? Will the truck still go 80-90 mph no problem? What is your mpg with the new gearing? Thanks.
@BigRobskitchen3 жыл бұрын
@@Jerlemi2 do it. It will be the best for your set up. I still managed to get it to those speeds without any problems. I was towing a 4400lb, 21ft travel trailer plus payload. The taco did great after the regearing.

Interesting to watch this video. My 2016 Tacoma 4dr V6 4x2 has stock everything. I added only a pipe rack, tonneau cover, and running boards. I would like better performance driving uphills. Currently driving at 60-65 mph my engine is reading 4200-4300 rpm. What would be the best new gear size to improve the perfordmance. I recently rode a 2017 Tacoma (same everything as my tacoma) except it was a 4x2 Sport. Traveling at 60-65 mph, it's rpm was approximately 3000 rpm +/-.

It is interesting to see you run 4.88/5.29 when I'm on 4.10s with my ZR2 diesel and the crawl ratio is right where it needs to be. Diesel vs gas, LOVE your taco. If you are ever in the midwest think of me and lets do some collab vids. I just crossed 50k miles on my ZR2 and finally have 35s and 4.10s, check out my build here. I go over how the delete is, the diesel and how to fit 35s. @

OK that's great and all for you guys with 35" tires and what about us that are closer to stock? I have a 2005 SR5 access cab.... And unfortunately bone stock it feels like it needs to be regeared..... I actually have slightly larger tires on it 265/70 17...... Yes my gas mileage is absolutely terrible. I mean I get 15 in town the minute I hit the freeway I dropped down as low as 11 mpg if I'm doing the 80 mph speed limit...

I get 19-27 mpg in my 2020 Taco, I will be getting it re geared though. I use 6th a lot around town and get great mpg, but when I get on the freeway it’s in and out of 6th until 85mph. Weird that they don’t have a 6th gear lockout, but it’s all for EPA and bean counters sabotaging r&d funds. If this thing had the new 10 speed Lexus has, it would be untouchable

No way you get 27 mpg on a 2020 tacoma. Must be driving downhill 100% of the time.
