I'm planning on adding more weight from the bumpers to slide plates.. so this vid really helped me choose the hear ratio.

Man what a relief to finally know exactly why my 16 tacoma v6 4x4 feels so weak. I had a hunch it was gearing... but i was really beginning to doubt this 3.5l v6. Does not help that I previously was driving a 5.7 tundra.... the tacoma should have had an option for the 4.7 V8 dude! I mean seriously tacomas now are the size of 1rst gen tundras! Come on Toyota!!!

Just had 5.29 Nitro Gears installed on my 2019 Tundra. It has a 2.5” lift and running 35” tires. Was very tired of feeling like I was constantly hauling around a trailer because of the weight & size of the tires. I almost went back to stock size but ended up having the gears installed and so glad I did. Now it feels like it did the day I bought. Holds 6th gear like it never did before. I can tell by the exhaust note that the engine isn’t struggling like it did before and always changing gears. If you plan on keeping your tundra and you’re running larger tires, do yourself a favor and go for it. Almost like getting a new truck all over again, way more fun to drive.

I have a 2014 FJ Cruiser and I’ve always thought the gearing is off especially when I rig it up for a trip + passengers. On top of that it’s struggling depending on wind conditions in complete stock setting. I’ve driven and F-150 on the highway with no dramas and wonder why doesn’t my FJ feel like that. Re-gearing my FJ might be the solution to a lot of my problems. This guy really sounds like he knows his stuff basing it on his experience.

If you have a 3rd gen Tacoma 5.29s are the only way to go! I’m running 285/70R17 BFG KM3 tires. No more driving around in 4th gear, no more hunting for gears, it’s a totally different truck. I highly recommend 5.29s. $1000 for labor and around $1260 for the gears. I went ahead and had a ARB front locker installed for no additional labor cost but I had the arb air compressor already installed. Just had to pay for the front locker.

Anyway we do want to get it re-geared, doesn't pull anything right now, however we are looking at getting as much out of this truck as possible. Not pulling anything at this time. I have a manual 2017 TRD sport manual. Manual is geared about right, i just wish the 6th was geared a little taller. There is a 1-2 MPG difference between 70 MPH and 80 MPH on the highway. 80 in 6th is about 2800 rpm, and MPG takes a bit hit.

From what I am hearing here, and the other videos is that it's 5.29's all the way. Regardless of tire size or weight. The tech has made a point of metioning the new trucks ( 2016+) love the higher revs and you might as well go with the 5.29s. I have a 2020, with no real intention on going real heavy in mods, just a cap and potentialy a rooftop tent. No one has definitively said this so it would be great if someone just said straight up. All he is saying is regearing is needed from stock.

Had a 93 t100 4wd for a while. Damn thing had 4.70 ratio stock rear end. Couldn’t drive it on the interstate hardly running 29 inch tires. Even that low of a ratio that truck was gutless. You are right about power and rpm being different. The 3.0 had no power; 4.70s just give a better crawl ratio.

I was ready to upgrade the clutch but had an cash offer for my truck so i sold it big mistake i should of kept that dam truck.

If this will increase fuel mileage, you'd think they'd do it at the factory to help them meet EPA rules, etc.?
@tacomabeast
@tacomabeast 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is, factory Tacomas have much smaller tires, and thus need smaller gearing to be efficient. Once you upgrade to bigger tires you’ve got to change the gearing to make it efficient again. That being said, upgrading to bigger gears while keeping stock tires will make your mileage worse too 🤙 hope that makes sense 🙌

@@tacomabeast Thanks for the response! It does make sense. As you can tell, I'm not a gearhead. I basically just use my OR for hunting/recreation and home projects. I learned with a '97 XJ that to do serious rock climbing/off roading, you either need to be a mechanic or rich, lol.

Dang that is not much for MPGs out of that white Taco, I get 21 in my bone stock Tacoma at the pump driving around town. I got 25 in the hills off-roading slowly on misc dirt roads. I do have a manual transmission though, so 4.30s in the rear. Again, all of that is measured at the pump when I fill up.

I ran 5.29s in my 98 4Runner, 4.88s in my LX450, and 5.29s in my 100 series Land Cruiser. All of them ran the exact same set of tires. I preferred 5.29s with the 35”s. They give a lot more control off road, power in the city, and the engine is barely working on the highway. Mileage was great with 5.29s. My GX460 will only have 33”s. A lot of people say I need 4.56 gears but I’m probably going with 4.88s based on my past experience. At 70mph it will sit at 2,000rpm which is not bad at all. The engine will be happy and it will hunt gears much less.

So I heard u say a manual 6 speed has a 4:30 stock ratio. I have a 2nd gen trd off road. I'm running 33s. U recommended going 4.88. If I were to upgrade to 35s should I go 5.29 like the people with automatics are doing or stay with the 4.88. Not sure what I have right now but its stock and I'm running 33s and it drives great.

Interesting to watch this video. My 2016 Tacoma 4dr V6 4x2 has stock everything. I added only a pipe rack, tonneau cover, and running boards. I would like better performance driving uphills. Currently driving at 60-65 mph my engine is reading 4200-4300 rpm. What would be the best new gear size to improve the perfordmance. I recently rode a 2017 Tacoma (same everything as my tacoma) except it was a 4x2 Sport. Traveling at 60-65 mph, it's rpm was approximately 3000 rpm +/-.

I get 19-27 mpg in my 2020 Taco, I will be getting it re geared though. I use 6th a lot around town and get great mpg, but when I get on the freeway it’s in and out of 6th until 85mph.
