I'm laughing my ass off over here because you didn't use a single tool, absolutely NO mechanic work, just a video of everything already installed on the vehicle, yet I learned more in this video than I did watching 4 other videos of DIYers not knowing what they're doing 🤣 GREAT video. Simple and straight to the point. THANK YOU!!!

This was a good laugh haha. I originally planned to take this video down after my class project was over but I saw how many people were viewing and commenting, so I figured why not leave it if people are finding it informative? Glad I did. Pretty sure it’s up there on one of the most viewed 4L60 videos at this point. 😂

thank you for this video. I watched it in prep for my job. I removed a 4L60e to R&R a leaking rear main seal on an 04 GMC Savanna. Although there were some differences, namely the exhaust system, your information made it easier for me to complete the job...better yet, it started when I was done. PS-I believe the transmission that I pulled out of the '04 was a remanned older version from '97-'99. The bell housing and the body were one piece.

Not sure if you still have the truck, but with that many trans, may i ask if your flushing the trans cooler lines? Alot of people dont bother to flush out the 2 lines going from trans to the cooler. But if you have a bad trans, those lines are holding contaminated fluid, and friction materials in them, and they get recalculated into the new trans... Very important step that too many people miss
@michaelmancini41956 жыл бұрын
splash- thanks for the comment! Yes, lines were flushed every time. 2 of the replacement transmissions were boneyard units that failed after low miles. Another was a faulty rebuild. That is the reasoning behind me replacing the trans on this truck so many times haha. But I did sell the truck earlier this year. Was long overdue for an upgrade!

Removing the bolts attaching the torque converter to the flywheel through a bigger opening below the bell housing should have been a better engineering option by GM than going through the starter opening.

Should have upgraded the band and frictions as well as the accumulator springs and servo. Could have saved one or two transmissions at least. A stage 2 rebuild kit is directed toward hauling and towing.

Mike, Great vid, one question and it's around the Bell housing bolts and in particular the top one. I've watched out 5 vids now on the Tran s removal and not one shows "How" they got it removed, plenty have the great music with the Trans coming out but not one shows "how" they go to that bolt, Any Tips on how to get to it?
@michaelmancini41956 жыл бұрын
Mario P it is the hardest one to get to for sure. I used a bunch of extensions with a long handle ratchet for more torque. Using wobble extensions are your best bet. You can easily grab a set of wobble extensions from harbor freight if need be to get the job done.

Would you say you had and easier job starting with the upper Bell Housing Bolts or the lower ones? I ask because I did a Silverado and the little hang or misalignment movement made it pretty hard for me to unbolt the uppers although I had already loosened them in advance due to the misaligned transmission as it came looser and looser considering the room one has on the uppers. The rest came off by hand.

Great info!!!! Thank you!!! Can this be done in my driveway on jack stands on my Yukon? What about the transfercase?
@michaelmancini41958 жыл бұрын
Sparta, you can do this in a driveway if you have HD 6 ton jack stands to get the truck high enough off the ground. It'll be a bit of a struggle, but it can be done. Tricky part will be supporting/lifting the trans back into place. Transfer case will have to be removed as well when doing the R&R on the transmission. My truck is RWD, so that's why you don't see a TC in my video. Look up your fluid capacity specs for your truck specifically--being that it's 4wd, yours will take more ATF than mine when filling it.

Thought the neutral safety switch might have been damaged while taking it off, replaced that and still no crank/start. Checked the fuses/ solenoids and all is good! I'm stumped and going crazy now. Any ideas?

JT Money I ended up taking it to the dealer after a few weeks of frustration trying to figure out what was wrong. There was a short at the ignition relay that had nothing to do with the trans. @jsauerii5 жыл бұрын
Fill it up about half or so in so that it is not running out when sideways, otherwise you would start the vehicle for a few seconds, 3-5 seconds and shut it off to recheck the tranny level as it will keep going into the TC leaving the tranny low each start till its caught up.

@michaelmancini41958 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge in that early of a year, the 4L60 & 4L80 transmissions were not equipped with a VSS, so your speedo should be getting a reading via the wheel speed sensors within the hub bearings. I would have to look into how the data is communicated from the EBCM to the PCM on that particular year in order to give you a more thorough answer. GM had a lot of problems with their EBCM's over the years and are known for various parts inside to fail.

Michael Mancini what suggestion were you going to make on the rebuild for these units? He said he has put in 5 transmissions in just 300k which seems horrible. I dont care how hard you drive they should definitely last more than 55k each time. I have 300k on my tahoe and just finally broke the sunshell housing which caused no reverse, no 2nd and no overdrive....otherwise in great shape inside and we tow and offroad all the time.

I found this difficult to watch. First issue was the drive shaft. If I am removing a transmission, I don't need so much time or detail telling me how to remove the shaft. I also don't care how it works. Second issue was the exhaust. I don't need to know how it all works, but only that it must be removed. Third issue is the starter. I don't need to know how it works. I need to know if removal is a requirement. You say to remove it but don't say why. Fourth issue is the trans lines. I don't need to know how they work, but I need to know how they are removed. I have looked at mine and the design is unusual. I watched your detail about clips, but did not understand. And you said nothing about the line nuts - they are not 18 or 19mm and not Imperial. Then then end came prematurely with no detail of how the transmission is to be separated from the engine.

Bob Black-the intended purpose of this video was actually for a class project back in college. It was only to highlight certain aspects of the job as I was giving a speech to educated individuals. I was asked to be specific on certain key factors, which landed me an A on the project by the way. The video just so happened to blow up on KZbin, so I left it up as other people found it to have useful information. If you aren’t mechanically inclined, maybe have an actual mechanic R&R your trans instead of tackling it yourself?
@bobblack38705 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmancini4195 Glad you got the grade. However my point is that the video was wandering, whereas a good video would stay on topic. At 0:12 you state this this video would be step by step. What means you should not wander into side topics not relevant to the actual subject matter. When you become better at that, your videos will increase in value to others.

Ac Price you have to remove the torque converter bolts. There are 3 or 4 bolts. You have to access them from where the starter motor is. Remove the starter first, then you can gain access to the torque converter bolts. Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully rotate the flywheel so you can gain access to all of the bolts.
