My daughter read and suggested this book to me - I listened on Audible. I cried. A lot. It was very validating for me to hear that I had trauma because I was told all my life that I was an over reactor, too sensitive and too mouthy - so, I always thought these were my "character flaws" - at 58 years old, can you believe it??? It was very freeing. Oh, I still have lots of trauma but I can also say it out loud...

From then on my life went into a downward spiral. I am still struggling you know.... mood swings anger issues hate jealousy you name it. But there is hope and I am moving forward.

Well said. Explains transgenerational trauma, unexplained response, and a freeing of mind for those who try so hard yet fail, with society as it is, predominantly ignorant, selfish, and dismissive. As in the movie Good Will Hunting, "IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT". You CAN rise above it, free yourselves, and it feels so good!

I started reading it a month and a half ago but left it to read later, which never happened, I'm glad I opened your video, love your soft demeanor, kind energy and enthusiasm with the subject too, I've been studying mind since I was quite little because of... trauma, clearly. So thanks for the reminder, I'm gonna resume the book today, I'll check your other videos later too, thanks for this review :), loved the plant too, haha Lost it at 7:40, it's incredible the lack of capacity that sometimes we have to see our own issues, I'm not a christian but Jesus talked a bit about it: "And why do you look at the splinter in your brother's eye, but not notice the beam in your own eye?" Edit: I've been wanting to do EMDR for treatment but was doubting, I resumed the book and remembered that it had a chapter on it, I read it and made my mind to try it, so thanks again, we rarely are aware of the impact or positive impact we can have for other people with our actions.

Thanks so much for your post. I have trauma and recently read the book. This book is the turning point for modern psychiatric awareness. I'm 63 and I've been working on my PTSD for over 11 years. I always knew someone else was in the driver's seat and my wife was just about sitting back and going for the ride of all these crazy adventures I would think up. I've been a mechanic, I've been a waitress secretary painter tile setter prostitute and drug dealer. Never being able to stick to anything. EMDR is letting childhood reality bubble up from my insides. It's extremely difficult and painful because I'm back into that reality. I don't know if I can do this but I'm not going to give up. It's so nice to hear someone talking about trauma. Bessel Vander Kolk is my hero.

When I was in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic hurricane Georges came through and wiped out all the housing structures in this village except for two cement buildings. I was offered a ride to the city to stay in a hotel but that seemed inconceivable to me. I wanted to stay close to what was familiar to me. Only when conditions deteriorated even worse in a couple days did I get on the next minibus out of the village. Part of this is shock, like a temporary paralysis, to make a change in course or direction.

Learning about polyvagal theory (ventral vagal and dorsal vagal complex) and how neuroception picks things up before our minds do. Learning about how both parasympathetic respones and how we react to things in terms of safety and survival. It shows the importance of healthy physical movement through the sympathetic nervous system (exercise, work, play, draw, perform, etc) to help us be more connected with the world (flow state), instead of being disconnected with the world (shutdown state). The ventral vagal complex effectively makes the top half of face more friendly and relaxed, increasing the likelihood of building social relations.

@daniqsaa2 жыл бұрын
It's always good to doubt 😉 But that's what kids do, for example. They go hide under the covers. And many criminals flee the police only to then be found hiding in their homes. When we're stressed from work, we wanna go home too (instead of the movies or the amusement park, for example). Humans are complex, though, so I would never defend this as a "rule"
