I learned I was pre-diabetic with an A1c of 5.8 at the end of 2023. (I didn’t even know such a thing existed). Using Carb Manager app, I went on a keto diet which restricted my carbs to 15 g and currently to 13 g. daily; lost 20 pounds. This week April 2, had my A1c test (non fasting) redone after three months on Keto with no cheats. The last week in March, had my fasting blood glucose tested. It came in at 99 from 105 - healthy but “just”. I was expecting a reading in the 80s. But the real devastating result was my A1c INCREASED to 5.9! I was so confident that it would be around 5.5! Cannot see my nutritionist nor primary care physician until the end of April. Felt totally lost, on a runaway train to Type 2 but have regrouped and developed a new plan which will hopefully get me out of prediabetes state. Why would my fasting glucose decrease but my A1c increase? Could there be an error in the test? Do I need to wait three more months to retest my A1c? In the meantime, I went back through all my blood work from previous years and saw I had an A1c of 5.7 in 2020!! Like you said, no one told me about the test results and what it meant. Carbohydrates (any carbohydrates) convert to glucose immediately after consumption. We do not need to eat carbohydrates - they are non-essential and raise blood glucose levels. I haven't eaten any carbs for years. Our body produces all the glucose it needs through gluconeogenesis (the liver produces it).

Hi. If you are diagnosed as prediabetic, then this is a Wake Up Call. If you change how you, when you eat and what you eat, you can prevent yourself from getting full blown diabetes. Take a plate, divide it into 4 portion. 1 salad 2 proteins (plant or animal based) 3 cooked vegetable 4th portion carbohydrates like grains. For eg: whole wheat brown bread or whole wheat flatbread with chickpea curry and cucumber onion tomato salad can be a meal. Have your salad first. Drink and eat these beverages/ garlic cloves on alternate days either on empty stomach or between meals - apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon vinegar in about 200 ml water - hot or room temp or cold), turmeric hot water 3 pinches of turmeric powder 1 pinch of pepper powder added to hot water, mix well drink. Fennel tea, 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, lemon tea (hot water with lemon juice no sugar no sweetness of any kind, no salt). Have garlic cloves on Monday fennel tea on Tuesday turmeric water on Wednesday etc. Rinse repeat. Hope this helps bring your hba1c to normal soon. Also do some body weight / strength training exercises everyday like squats or wall sits or planks, walk alternate days or days when you are bored to exercise. Sleep regularly and well each night. Also manage your stress with some deep breathing. Just sit in a corner, breathe deeply in and out for a few minutes. You can also noisily breathe in and out. Eat between sunrise and sunset as much as possible. Have your dinner as close as possible to sunset. All the best 👍

I'm 61 and have been battling high cholesterol for decades and now I'm pre-diabetic with my last A1c of 6.3 , fasting glucose of 123, HDL 52/LDL 145, resting heart rate of 50s-70s and BP always 117/72 or better. Whereas before I was laid off, had an operation to replace my ACL, got divorced, lost my best friend to cancer and stopped taking my medication regularly all my numbers were excellent with just 5mg Rosuvastatin a day. I'm 5'9.5", weigh 191, fairly muscular and have maintained a consistent 31 inch waist throughout my life. I don't "work out" but am very strong from physical labor and make a point to walk at night with my dog 3 or 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes if possible. I fast 6PM-6PM with 2 cups black coffee/splenda, Metamucil and apple cider vinegar in the mornings with average 115 glucose and maybe some nuts throughout the day until 6PM when I usually eat beef, avocados onions and tomatoes and salmon or fish other times. I rarely eat grains, bread, sugar, never drink alcohol or soda, I drink lots of water maybe 8 oz per hour. I ate some sugar after I got my continuous glucose monitor and it bounced glucose up to 150 for a few minutes and then declined to the low 80's over the next few hours. My glucose stays around 115 while sleeping but spikes to 123 or more when I get up to use the restroom and sometimes stays there until about noon when it drops to 107-110. I'm still taking the 5mg statin. I'm not diabetic but after seeing some of you report numbers in the 5s on your A1C I'm looking for suggestions on how I can get there. I'm being pushed to get on metformin before I hit 6.5 and I'm considering it to avoid the medical insurance changes after that milestone diagnosis my Dr says he'll have to report if I ever hit that number. I don't lack discipline and can/will do whatever it takes to beat this trend.

@big6316 Do Not fast between 6 am to 6 pm. That is between sunrise and sunset, that is the eating window. Eat between 6 AM to 6PM. And Fast between 6PM to 6AM. Eat your salad first, then your plant or animal based protein, only 1/4th of your plate should be carbs. If you are following one meal a day, Eat that one meal between 5 to 6 pm. Or Eat between 2 pm to 6 pm and have two meals in that 4 hour eating window. You can fast other times. Eat 80 percent plant based and 20 percent animal based. Animal based foods also bring a lot of fats and cholesterol so going majorly plant based will help reduce your hba1c numbers. You can eat your fish or other meats in the 20 percent of the times.

The problem with the Standard American Diet is not a too high percentage of carbs (around 50%). The problem is the sources people get their carbs from; refined grains, soda and ultra processed foods. Carb intake in the traditional Blue Zones diets is about 65% but it is from foods like whole grains, beans and starchy vegetables. These populations live a very long time and don’t have a problem with diabetes and overweight. Restricting these foods is a big mistake from a long term health perspective. The key to normalizing blood sugar is to lose weight until you are below your ”personal fat threshold”. Se research by Roy Taylor.

One have your pudding only once a week if you must have it. Have it after you have eaten a full meal so you will have less of it and eat it after lunch so that you can walk it off and not increase your blood sugars crazily. Don't eat sweet things at night just before sleep because they will increase blood sugars and stay in the system till morning. Have your sweet (on occassion) before 3 pm. So you have time to walk it off your system before you sleep at night.

Been on keto/carnivore 2.5 years. Lost a 100 pounds and my a1c is still 9.7. I eat no sugar and almost no carbs. A few blueberries here and there. I feel great and exercise daily. HELP. I’ve changed my entire lifestyle and things are getting worst according to those numbers

What is the recommended A1C level for senior citizens?
@idhungw9 ай бұрын
There is no breakdown of a1c for age. If your a1c is 5.6% and under you don’t have diabetes. A1c between 5.7%~6.4% is pre diabetes. A1c above 6.5% is diabetes. This A1c breakdown is for all ages.

My A1C is 5.4, but my fasting glucose over the past 7 years has been 98-124. I bought a glucose monitor, and my result is always over 100. Most times it is 112-115. It doesn’t matter if I’ve fasted or if I’ve eaten. Does this mean my insulin is not working? I also have not eaten sugar or processed foods since January of this year, and also watch my carbs (and have included intermittent fasting). I’ve lost only 8 pounds in 9 months. I workout everyday for 40 minutes, including strength, cardio, and balance. I just started taking Berberine, so I’m hoping this might help? This is maddening, because my husband started eating and exercising like me, and lost 30 pounds in 3 months. 😢

You either have to lower your carb even more or exercise more. To feel satieted, increase protein. You might want to check your hormone level and might need to go on hrt: ß17-estradiol and progesterone.
@KAT0003511 ай бұрын
@@TheShumoby I workout everyday. When I increase exercise more than the 45 minutes a day I gain more weight. I have a tendency to overdo. But I’m 58, and the female body can’t recover from exercise like it did when there was a lot of estrogen. I can’t take hormone supplements because of a history of breast cancer in my family. My AST was high after taking Berberine, so the doctor told me to stop. My doctor actually told me to stop worrying about the last few pounds, but I want them gone. It’s frustrating.

Can you lower your a1c without losing weight?
@1983maya4 ай бұрын
Yes. Try eating overnight water soaked fenugreek seeds in the morning on empty stomach. Do this 4 times per week. But make sure you do eat a good breakfast after, fenugreek seeds bring down blood sugars very fast. Do this for a month and check your hba1c 😊
@1983maya2 ай бұрын
I am going to be blunt/rude here. If a diabetic person is fat/obese they Have to bring their weight down to reduce their hba1c numbers. I am not even saying they need to come down by 50 pounds or something. Every pound matter, every single pound of weight that fat diabetic people drop, their hba1c numbers go down like magic. It's a bitter pill to swallow but it's the truth. This benefit does NOT work for thin people who have diabetes. And they can pick their poison from medicines like metformin that help lose weight, good diet, good exercise, good stress management and good sleep of 7 to 8 hours per night, fat people can lose weight to slim down and be more healthy. I say this as a fat person losing weight to become more healthy. Tl, dr: Fat people have to lose weight to bring down their HBA1C numbers. End of story. 😊

Dr. Morgan, I take garlic oil and oregano oil. Am I able to take berberine with those oils?--Thanks , Mark
@1983maya2 ай бұрын
I am not a doctor but garlic itself helps lower blood sugars. I don't think it would be wise to have both berberine and garlic in the same day as they can bring your sugars too much down. Either have each on alternate days like garlic oil on Monday and berberine on Tuesday or just skip the garlic oil and have berberine for a few weeks.

Thank you for the information. What is the best time to check your morning glucose? I get up around 6:15 am, should I measure it at that time? I never eat breakfast, so should it be measured maybe two hours after I wake or just before I am ready for lunch at 11:00? I only eat two meals per day, but it's still confusing. The reason for this question is because we all have rising glucose levels just before we wake up, I think this is called the "Dawn Effect". My thought is that if you measure your glucose level within a few minutes after you wake, it will not be accurate. You can't be certain that your body is outside of the Dawn Effect window. Any thoughts?
@emsea165810 ай бұрын
Whats the point of checking a fasting glucose? Unless it's abnormal it's completely useless. A normal fasting glucose tells you nothing about your actual response to food.
@momiley64758 ай бұрын
My thought precisely because of the circadian rhythm that’s gets body ready for wake up between 4am and 8am,if I check blood glucose before 8am it’s more than 100 but after 8am it’s at 100….been thinking about that a lot !
@carolk60028 ай бұрын
There is more than one thing that can affect fasting glucose. I would still check, shortly after you wake up.

You mention walking for 10 minutes after eating. Does it have to be walking or can I use my recumbent instead?
@st3482-t2i9 ай бұрын
Yes, any physical activity will use up the glucose in your blood. The recumbent cycle uses your leg muscles, which is similar to walking.

I have never been diagnosed with pre diabetes or diabetes. I just went to see a doctor for prostate issues and a physical. I did not notice until later there was a diagnosis of prediabetes in my record. The only thing I found pertaining to this was in her notes saying she discussed with me my prediabetes. Which she didn’t. My a1c was 5.2. When they did the urine test to check for infections, the results were also negative for glucose and ketones? Did she see my age and just assume? Then didn’t discuss because the results came back normal, or are there other factors I am missing.

Hi Morgan , i’ve a question that if a person first time ever in their life did a hba1c test and he got 5.9 in the age of 31 and he reversed it to 5.5 in four months. So can he eat normally all food types like ice cream , white flour , rice in moderation or not? Is he a non diabetic or if once you are tested prediabetic there’s no way going back? Need your answer please!
