This is the first I've seen of your channel and I'm blown away so far. Your filming is stunning! I've been dealing with some extreme anxiety attacks lately and I put your video on and it seriously helped me relax. I really miss getting out and doing this stuff, its been a long time. I've always wanted to see Killarney but glad I got to see it through your lenses. Will be watching your videos all weekend, Cheers! Mark

Your channel popped up in my feed, so i watched this entire video, then subscribed. I follow Xander, Jim Baird, and Jon of Lost Lake's, so really enjoy this type of content. Your camera work is excellent, and it's obvious you have a deep appreciation and trust of nature to allow it to carry your story at times without verbal narrative. Well done! 👏🏼

I haven’t finished the video yet I’m watching it on my tv but I have to say you are doing an awesome job. I watch a lot of canoe content on YT in the winter Jim Baird, Canoe the North, Northern Scavenger and the like and I almost skipped over your video but the picture was awesome so I gave it a try. You do a phenomenal job editing. It doesn’t get boring you show the scenery and you talking the right amount can’t say enough. Keep it up and you will have a ton of subscribers. I have to step up my game now on my filming. That trip time of year and place is absolutely gorgeous, the colors were crazy. Nice boat by the way I have one too and they are a lot of fun, light, surprisingly maneuverable for so little rocker and can carry a ton. 👍 subscribed I will start watching the rest of your content

The most interesting aspect I've found camping in the Fall is the stillness in the air, the flat water. Late adternoons you can hear a pin drop. The wildlife serms to quiet down and the atmosphere can be a little erie but pure solitude for heavy thinkers. Nice canoe. Good luck with it.

Thanks Eze! She's a 14 foot Prospector in Kevlar layup. 30lbs although I haven't weighed it to confirm. Very similar to the canoe you rented on your last Algonquin trip, just a foot shorter and a bit wider. She's a bit slower but a really appreciate the added stability and comfort for long days on the water.

Well done on all fronts, including the filming and editing. I wondered about fishing as well (I can’t drive over a bridge without looking for fish habitat) but you kept it interesting and the story moving. I FF thru a lot of these vids but not yours. Also, glad you showed the pitfalls along with the glory. We all take an unexpected swim sometimes. Keeping it real.

Great trip!! Great choice on that canoe it's a beauty. The red stands out especially when you portage through the green forest and looks great with the exposed granite and yellow leaves when you're paddling on the lake. Looks like you had the entire park to yourself so far, must be great! Everytime I go to Killarney it's super busy, but I guess you made a good call going very late in the season.

Hey Kev! This was really healing and inspiring! I have no idea what it is about watching the Canadian Canoeing trip vids. We’re a sit on top household here with one sit in i picked up on Craigslist last year. Im actually thinking about putting it back on Craigslist. But watching all of these Canadian canoe trippin vids makes me want to consider getting a canoe like what you have. I at least want to get my passport in order and come up there for a guided trip if something like that exists. Normally i kayak camp on big Maine lakes but no portaging on those trips. I was curious what you used for bear protection both for your person as well as for your food? It seems a lot of canoe camping KZbinrs like that tent that you have there. Anyway…. Im rambling on here. Thanks for filming this trip!! Looks like a lot of work and it’s very much appreciated for sure! You really captured everything well!! Thank you again and take care. Paul

Wow, thank you for leaving such a wonderful comment. If you enjoy these types of videos, I think you would really enjoy canoe tripping in a place like Algonquin, Temagami or Killarney. You can rent canoes or bring your own. There are guided services but I don't have any experience using them. Cheers!

Nice boat - I have the same in the basalt layup/colour. Don’t feel bad about the dump - I did the same thing this summer on the Flack Lake route. Right into the black muck! Luckily I was solo so only my pride suffered. My daughter and I are planning a similar route to yours for next summer, which will include Bell, David, and Great Mountain lakes. Thanks for the preview!

Awesome vid Kev! Killarney is beautiful and probably far enough from TO to avoid the crowds, even in the summer. Don't listen to people telling you what you should add to your videos- if people want to see more fishing, find the content creator that does that. Gear review, find someone else. I love the simplicity of your trips, and will get my fishing hit elsewhere. Your videos are awesome the way they are, don't change a thing! Keep doing you Kev and thank you for sharing with us. Sweet. Have the place to yourself at this time? I did a 10 day (Sept)in thru 3 narrows and out into mcgregor bay and up to the quiet remote north and back around to David. Absolutely love this. Loved 3 narrows especially the 2 quiet ends. I might post my first vid(that was my intention) but realized at that bend into the north wind I wouldn't get the entire trip captured(batteries dying way quicker than I thought). I also took a vid of that rock face at 18:44. I remember that exact spot.

On a side note - don’t feel pressured to incorporate fishing into your trip videos. To me, there is nothing more boring than watching a guy fishing on his canoe trip video. Not to mention, the extra gear required, time to fish, and time to clean, fillet, cook, and eat the fish would dramatically change the types of trips you do and take away from the time you have to relax and enjoy yourself at camp.

Thanks as always! The main reason I went with the Prospector 14 is that it's a bit more stable and the extra width allows me to setup my tripod in the canoe in a much more stable way. I find it a bit more relaxing to paddle, but it certainly is slower than the Keewaydin 15. I would say perhaps 20% slower. I'm really enjoying it so far though. And congrats on your new canoe!

I have the prospector 15, tandem which I solo occasionally. It’s not a fast boat but plenty fast for me. And like you said it’s very stable. I got it as a pond hopper but it’s plenty fine on open water. I’m rarely covering more than 12-15 km a day paddling.

Wow Kev what an amazing video! Epic! your choice of music along with your beautiful videography is second to none on KZbin. Quick question. Why did you choose the solo over a pack canoe? I tried a pack canoe for a similar trip this year and loved it, but I've never used a standard solo. I'd appreciate your insights. Also, I think some may have also asked, but it would be cool if you made a video going over your gear, I need to learn how to pack lighter, I think mine was near 60lbs for a 5 day lol. Might be a good winter video for you to make!
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 11 ай бұрын
Thanks Jay! To answer your questions, they are both extremely similar but they each have their own advantages over the other. The regular canoe seat allows you to sit higher and gives you a better view of your surroundings. It's a bit easier to move around and get in and out of. The advantage of the pack seat is that it's more stable since your centre of gravity is lower, and is more comfortable due to the back support. I like being a bit higher up so I went with the traditional canoe seat. And yes I might do a gear video at some point. We'll see...

Bring a fishing rod! Not only will you enjoy catching and cooking up some fresh fish, it also adds to your content. You often travel over some prime trout spots. Just get a cheap telescopic and small reel - your tackle (couple Mepps spinners, couple small spoons, hooks weights, you can dig up some worms/grubs if neccessary) can fit into an Altoids tin. Weighs nothing. And what did you eat? Record that and talk about what you prepared, even if it's simply commercially prepared boil in bag stuff. And once in while do a gear bomb and show what you bring, I know you travel super light. And finally, more than 3 seconds on the new boat would have been nice. All good though Kev - been watching your adventures since APP last year. Be safe

Most lakes in Killarney have little to no fish in them anyways due to damage from acid rain, and the ones that do are protected as sanctuaries (OSA and Killarney Lake). Not much trout either, I think it’s mostly Pike or Smallmouth Bass if you get lucky enough to catch something. You didn’t miss out on much by not bringing a rod on this trip!

Well I'm used to renting a Swift Keewatin 15' solo, which is a much tippier canoe. The Prospector 14 feels a lot more stable in comparison. I really enjoyed how relaxed I felt in the Prospector, even if it is a bit slower through the water.

As always, great adventure in the wilds of Algonquin, thanks for sharing. I have noticed that you never show the thunder box area of the campsite you choose. hahahaa Those weren't around in my days in Algonquin, so I have to ask. Who cleans them up or are they left to nature?
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 6 ай бұрын
Thunder boxes are not something that I am particularly keen on showing unless it's an exceptional one. I did show one once - in my 5-day fall solo trip video from a year ago. Once they are full the park staff buries the hole and relocates the thunder box to a different spot.

Those are some impressive single carries. Great on the edit. I do wonder if the backpacking backpack hits the carry yolk much as I don’t have a portage pack just a backpack like yours and always wondered if it works with canoe overhead. Guess it does.

Excellent content, videography and narration Kev. Killarney is a long way from here but one of the Crown Jewels of Canada’s parks. I drive a Swift Keewaydin 15 (which looks so well designed for that park) and 16’ Prospector depending on trip and gotta love the single carries. You carried a nice tight kit. Did it turn out to be a tick bite?

Nice to make one carry, what was your approximate total weight ? If you looking for a fishing kit i try a lot of set up on my river canoe trips. The lightess and effective one is a shot ice fishing rod with a good sealed spinning reel spoled with 20pds bread line and 10 or 20pds fluoro (20 for pike) , max 6 lures, and no fancy rod holder, just 2 small spring clips and velcro . You will cast far enoff, troling easy and bring back the fish in the boat so easy. For filet knife i use Opinel folding .
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice Robert. I think my total load on this trip was around 90lbs (including food). I never thought about an ice fishing rod, but I've bought myself a regular 2-piece rod, a reel, and some lures for next season. I also did pick up the Opinel filet knife 👍

@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild 11 ай бұрын
Thanks Matt! Yes I single carried all my portages. As far as food storage, all my food goes into a heavy duty dry bag that I hang above the ground at night. I prefer this for shorter trips as it's a lot lighter and more compact. Since I single carry, everything has to fit in my 85 litre backpack.
