Having worn pointy heeled shoes for too many years - they were the finest, however they still resulted in my disforming my toes, I wholeheartedly applaud what I consider to be the “ liberation of the feet”. Why sacrifice health to beauty when we can have both? There are many aspects of the new shoes aesthetic that I love, good common sense is one of them.

Yes, the ugly clunky shoes are not elegant and pretty. But, I live in a city amd we have to walk. Sometimes 10 miles a day. None of the stylish shoes have enough support for my lifestyle. Loafers come close but my feet are narrow and I walk right out of them. What to do?

I have found Dansko clogs to be extremely comfortable and move naturally. You can't wear them with everything but they look great with a pair of jeans and a sweater/blazer

I agree 100% with the shoes/sandals you chose to cover. Every time I see the Birkenstock style sandal, it makes me think of Fred Flintstone, and he didn’t wear sandals, he just had big feet. And that’s what that style does to anyone who wears them. Question? Why do women wear thick-soled boots with a beautiful outfit? I’ll never know. You may have guessed, you really hit a chord with me. For some of us with foot problems, Birkenstocks are a Godsend and the only sandal we can wear in the summer. Dainty shoes ruined my feet, and wearing Birkenstocks have corrected my foot issues.

To me, clothes, shoes and accessories are all about play, not about being "classy", sophisticated, etc., unless of course that is your priority, and that's fine too. My adult daughter is very "classical" in her look, it works for her. I used to be, but I'm not anymore, as it doesn't work well on me. I like to "break" an outfit with something totally unexpected, knocking the whole thing a bit off kilter. That's the "play" part for me. 😊

I have some very fine looking wedges that are beautiful with longer dresses. Having spent my youth in 4” stilettos, my ankles and toes are now distorted to the point I need an operation. I now require comfort and balance instead of the classic elegance of a high heel. I’m a classic dresser and always complemented on what I put together, so I think it’s just about finding a good balance, I also think it depends on what type of woman you are. Confidence is everything, no matter what you wear.

Yes, these shoes look ugly. But some of them have soles or padding in them to make them feel as though you are walking on pillows. Some people need the support of thick straps to hold the shoe on their feet. Others have foot issues that prevent them from wearing the elegant shoes we would all love to have. I cannot wear slip ons, slides or loafers. No matter what, they fall off my feet. I wear what is comfortable for me to wear and walk in. If they look ugly, there are more important things in life than ugly shoes. Anyway, I can look elegant from the ankles up. Lol.

With the exception of the 'fisherman sandal' I totally agree with you about the others as have a pair of the former (cognac in color and have a good gripping sole) as might wear them for protection of my toes on certain terrains as well in a warm climate, where otherwise one might choose sneakers/trainers which do not appeal to me. On that note however, slip on sandals with a low block or kitten heel and single vamp strap IMO are not only that unstable to walk in but can be very noisy on rigid surfaces with their flap-flap-flap-flap..... 😊.

I am a nurse and wear black leather clogs with my scrubs. I'm on my feet in these for 12hr shifts. Wouldn't wear them if they weren't comfortable. But not for general wear for me. I had a navy leather wooden sole pair in the early 80s and yes they were noisy 😄

I do have some clogs… I occasionally wear them with jeans. I have always had clogs, I like the height they give me, they are comfortable, I like the way they look and sound. I don’t care if they’re in fashion or not. I’ve bought now and again since the ‘60’s. I love beautiful shoes and boots also. I wear pretty sandals in the summer. They all get worn. Well I guess I’m the villain in this story: I own two pairs of clogs, I own Birkenstocks and the fisherman sandals as well, all these shoes are utility pieces meant for hiking, cycling, beach walks, summer activities, travel, gardening etc. Ugly? I own several pairs of Birkenstock’s, and I’m planning to buy some fisherman sandals as well. No apologies from me. Just like I’m not a fan of high heels (I do love kitten heels, low wedges and a small block heel) . I think high heels can translate as overdone and overly thought out. It’s all about the proportions (and arch support, of course)! I love my flat form espadrilles, cork sandals and one pair of fisherman’s sandals. But I only buy them with soles about an inch thick and flexible, in colors that blend with my skin. My feet are big enough to make the clumpy versions you showed look like cement blocks - especially those Dr. Martens!🤣 Great tips as always!

I badly sprained my ankle 8 weeks ago and it is still healing if it wasn't for me purchasing a pair of Dad Sandals I wouldn't have been able to manage to walk and improve mobility. I have worn them with everything and to be honest I quite like them. I am looking forward to wearing my other Sandals and heels but that's still a long way off. It's made me re think about shoes in general . I am sporty and dance a lot and being restricted has made me appreciate how lucky I am to have good mobility normally. I agree with most of your choices and think those chunky/heavy shoes ruin an outfit. However, I have 2 pairs of clogs by Merrell and they are the most comfortable shoes I own. I have foot problems and need an arch support also I cannot have an over flexible base so the inflexibility you dislike is what makes my feet pain-free. I do struggle with how to they drag down a look but sometimes comfort must win.

Great video Gemma, as always. I have witnessed my daughter go from being a classy pretty lady to a bizarre looking fashion victim when wearing a very clumpy boot. It seems as if all our femininity is being taken away from us with the latest fashions. There quite simply is not one current trend that is relevant to me at 54 years old, any clothing that is boxy, oversized, chunky, cutouts or masculine has no appeal whatsoever to me and I feel as if my age group are being ignored and left behind because of it (I do remember chunky soles and clogs etc from the seventies and they weren't great then!). The divide is immense and quite sudden as if it caters ONLY for the young (30year old and below). I now feel I have to be even stronger in my views of my own style in order to feel ok with the way I choose to dress. To be able to dovetail a trend into my classic wardrobe is great but these days it just does not work! Who are these dress designers? and who are we to feel we should concur with what is only their ideas of clothing?

I recently returned to a high-end mall for the first time since the pandemic started. I was appalled when I saw those ugly, chunky designer sneakers costing hundreds of dollars. I agree that chunky shoes seem to be all the rage. The mall used to equally cater to all ages; now, it seems to focus more on early 30s and younger. Like you, I loathe boxy, masculine cuts of fashion. I was sad that our Nordstrom eliminated classy designers, such as Burberry and St. John’s, and started focusing more on “younger” labels. I guess I will have to stick with my favorites that I bought 20+ years ago and look classic (even though people are so casual in my hometown these days-the only people who wear jackets/sportcoats these days in town are attorneys and my mom-so sad).

My daughter, as an example isn't choosing her trendy clothing because she likes them BUT because she feels the need to fit in, being led by others ideas. I adore dressing when done appropriately, choosing what is right for me, my age and lifestyle. So sad that we are being pressured to be led I just hope that eventually things take a natural turn for the good, one can only hope! I am sorry your daughter feels pressured to choose what everybody else is wearing, not what she actually likes. Pressure to fit in costs money, and I wish I could get back the money from my purchases (way before social media) I made just to fit in (my “popularity level” didn’t even budge). That was still a learning experience. I am glad your husband likes you just the way you are, not for who he wants you to be! I wish there were more people like that-unfortunately, there are too many of the latter!

IMHO the biggest issue with these shoes is the excessive platform sole.most of them would be fine if the soles were smaller. Personally I love the look of fisherman sandals, loafers, espadrilles and Birkies. I love seeing women look comfortable in shoes that won’t deform their feet, but also that don’t make them clomp.

I liked to wear chunky boots (like the brand "Dockers") in my 20s, especially in fall/winter ... now I'm 50 and totally agree with your perception and opinion 👍- and I wonder how I was able to walk around all day in those heavy pieces?! 😉😄 Sunny regards 🌞

I agree with you, 100%! On the other end of the spectrum are rubber flip-flops. Some women wear them with beautiful outfits and they just ruin the look with their flip-flops. There is nothing uglier, more unsanitary or worse for the feet. They belong on the beach - ONLY!

Great video Gemma! I despise Birenstocks as well, but here in northern California both men and women wear them as a statement, like driving a Prius. Our daughter bought a pair recently, in metallic silver! Gaaah!!

I do have some clogs, not traditional ones though much daintier made by Pikolinos and they’re not at all clompy they’re tan with a punched hole design and beautiful soft leather with a small square leather covered heel and I’ve had them for years and have a bag to match! I can nod to the trend without buying new and be much smarter and more comfortable ;)

I love clogs and have been wearing them for years regardless if they are trendy or not. They look great with wide leg jeans or trousers. Simple elegant slides are uncomfortable and unpractical unless you are not walking or standing.

I agree with you 100%. I am in my 60s now and have hated ugly, big soled, clumsy looking shoes ever since I was old enough to care what was on my feet! My heart sinks at the start of every season when the fashion industry decides that these sorts of shoes or boots are what we should be wearing because it always comes down to the high street. Over the year’s I’ve become convinced that the fashion industry likes to make women look as ugly as possible! I have never followed trends and refuse to wear any of them and will hunt high and low to find daintier, more elegant shoes or else wear shoes I have bought some years ago that come from a ‘prettier flattering shoe time’. 🥰💜

I believe elegance is an attitude which has room for the chunky shoe trend. Sometimes practicality must meet form and function, particularly if you live in a city where walking is your primary mode of transportation. I believe there are sophisticated versions of the trends that make for a happy medium.
