Honestly Aston's character killing himself as a baby in Butterfly effect was the version I first saw. I thought the scene was incredible! Then the mother holds her belly and screams "No not again!" and you realize his older son who died ALSO had the ability, went through his own version of futures and fuck ups, and concluded that he too needed to die for the better. When I finally saw the original, I was like "This is total shit." and fondly remember the alternate to this day.

yeah, I really REALLY like the "strangling ending", and made it my mission to show it to everyone I know who has seen the movie with the "sidewalk ending" (which is the default ending here in german TV)

That scene just makes so much more sense! She had a few stillbirths do the same thing and it makes sense they all went through what Ashton's character did!

#8. Dr Stranglelove: the reason they didn't use that ending was that it was clear from the footage that the actors were really having fun tossing pies at each other, Kubrick wanted the joke to be a bunch of angry politicians reduced to pointless violence. But the very apparent humor captured on film ruined the mood of the scene. #4. WWZ: Apparently the Moscow scenes are going to be used in WWZ's sequel.

The directors cut for the butterfly effect with the sucide ending was the first version of the film I had seen. I had never seen the theatrical ending at the time so imagine seeing alternative versions of the theatrical ending not knowing he survived in the theatrical cut

+robhigg2203 Exactly the same for me, the 3 times I've watched this film earlier was with the suicide ending. It wasn't until I recently (about 1 month ago) saw it on Netflix (I think) that I saw the theatrical ending, and I was so dissapointed - but it did make me question if I remembered the movie wrongfully.

The ONLY good thing about Terminator Genisys was that Matt Smith was in it, and it was kinda cool seeing him play a villain (if somewhat odd, in my Whovian heart). I will see anything with Matt Smith or David Tennant in it (and I seem to keep seeing movies or shows with Eccleston in it without realizing it's him in half of them)! But quite frankly, I think I've seen maybe TWO movies with Christian Bale I liked him in (the names escape me), and a few movies I've liked regardless of him being in it. I know he has his fans, and I respect that. I've honestly tried to like him. But when he's acting, it's like his face is made of stone. And his eyes are just cold. (Granted, I haven't seen all his movies, so he may be better in some!) Although apparently IRL he's known for blowing red hot and cursing like a whole CREW of sailors (as the old saying goes.) Now, given my age, I prefer the Tim Burton Batmans (well, the first couple), liked my Batman with a bit of wit and well, facial expressions, but if Batman was supposed to be an unemotional sociopath, than Bale was type casting... Hmmmm....but now I'm wondering what it would be like to have Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays ANOTHER unemotional sociopathic detective...as Batman...I have to go, this requires some mulling...one part of me says "NO WAY" and another says "But maybe...his Sherlock and Batman have some commonalities." Heck, I'll see pretty much anything with him in it too anyway. The guy is one of the best actors out there IMO and his impressions are a riot. He does this Dragon thing that'll just floor you...(no seriously, if you haven't seen the behind the scenes video of him BEING Smaug...his voice (which was barely changed, I've seen him on Graham Norton where he does it without mechanical help and it's like ZOWIE! And they mimicked his movements, he crawled and stalked as Smaug...it's amazing. Gives me chills). You want to talk about alternate endings? I got one title for you. "Clue." It made alternate endings cool.
@iKadaj

I agree with The Birds, because the actual ending left me going "But then what??" Seeing the bridge and being all like "Ah, birds took over the whole world not just that one place" would have been a lot cooler than thinking they just moved somewhere else and went "Phew, you'll never believe what happened in our hometown." I'd like to see that movie remade, but only if it's done really good and not with cheapass Birdemic effects, partly just because there are so many birds the original skipped over. Hummingbirds are pretty damn scary when they go blitzing by your head like missiles on your porch, and then there's hawks and bigass vultures that are scary enough just looking at you from a safe distance, and also parrots/cockatiels/etc that are harmless trusted pets you'd never expect to suddenly claw out your eyeballs. Just the original by itself makes me nervous when I go out to refill my bird feeders (especially when one doesn't fly away when I approach) but I think it has a lot of potential to make a really good, terrifying remake if someone did it right and didn't just throw it together for a crashgrab. I've been attacked by a rooster before and people where my mom works were talking about being flogged by wild bluejays and it's easy to find a lot of google pics of people getting chased by geese/swans and it's common knowledge that ducks not only bite but twist their beaks when they do, so that adds a bit of creepy factor to birds as opposed to traditional horror movie animals like snakes and sharks that normally don't bother you much in real life, and sharks are stupidly easy to avoid---just stay out of the ocean, dumbass---where as birds are already EVERYWHERE.

I've definitely seen the "The Butterfly Effect" alternate ending, and it's definitely awesome. He gets the idea from the fact that his mother tells him she had several miscarriages. So not only does he sacrifice himself in the womb, it's implies several of his siblings have too.

One thing that you missed about "Butterfly Effect" is that Kutcher's character had two older siblings, who were miscarried. This makes the "suicide" ending much more thought provoking.

He goes back to his birthday party where he meets the girl for the first time and tells her "I hate you and hope you die" so that they never become friends. He never sees her again up until they're grown up. Then they're passing on the street, he recognizes her and keeps walking. After a second she stops and looks back like she finds something familiar about him.

The theatrical ending has him look at a pic of himself right before the girls birthday party. he goes up to her and threatens to kill her so they never end up being friends or romantically involved.

Someone went back in time to make sure they told the studio to make sure the DVD had the original ending play for us. It worked. No one cares about the theatrical ending. Kutcher killing himself was the only way it worked. It's a huge metaphor for life. Once you start down that path of second guessing... it's better to have never bothered at all. The only way to live life is to let it all play out and follow the path you create.

There were four different endings to that movie. I only recently found that out as I didn't even know there was more than one. I was watching it recently with a friend who had never seen it and it blew my mind that a movie I loved (and given its subject matter), suddenly had a different ending. We looked into it there and then and found four alternate endings in total. Great idea for a movie that was all about changing how things turn out.

There are a few references to this earlier in the movie: that Evan was not from his mother's first pregnancy but that she had endured several miscarriages before, and that when meeting his institutionalized father (the time-altering power appears to be genetic) he given a dire warning against attempting to meddle with his own past that he chooses to ignore.

Sorry, gotta disagree with you re: Strangelove. "MEIN FUHRER!! I CAN WALK!!!" is the best ending line to a movie since Gone With the Wind. And the reason that they cut the pie fight ending was that the movie came out right after the Kennedy assassination. They had to make a couple of changes; one is Slim Pickens changing his line when he was reading off the contents of the survival kit in the bomber from "A guy could have a good time in Dallas" to "A guy could have a good time in Vegas" as Kennedy was killed in Dallas. The second had President Muffley "killed" by a pie thrown by the Soviet Ambassador- Muffley's hit and went down and General Turgison (George C Scott) delivers a line saying that they had to avenge the President "Who had been struck down in the prime of his youth" - again, not something folks wanna hear right after the President is killed.
@thrashpondopons2776
@thrashpondopons2776 8 жыл бұрын
+Wonka70 'Dr. Strangelove' had other scenes which were either deleted not shot all together for one reason or another. Supposedly it was intended that James Earl Jones was going to have a more poignant monologue. But instead we were left with 'where's Major Kong?'.
@Wonka70
@Wonka70 8 жыл бұрын
+Thrashpondo Pons Kubrick kept changing it as he went along. George C Scott was extremely pissed at him and never worked with him again due to the fact that Kubrick had Scott do a take where he was doing the scene almost comically and goofy. Then he'd have Scott repeat the scene seriously and he took the comedic take every time.

The Dr. Strange love alternate ending would have been PERFECT! As someone who realizes that war is totally pointless, it really would have made the movie better. I mean really just think about it: two countries don't like each other, so they both send their armies to fight each other, and the winner gets to have his way. I've often thought, wouldn't it be much more humane to settle their disagreements with, I don't know, a football match or something? That way, the winner would have his way and no lives would be lost or families torn apart or destroyed. But a custard pie fight? That's brilliant! It's even better!

Here's a daring idea: contemplate the idea that a movie with an upbeat ending can be better than "let's be angsty because it'll shock people." I always wonder how folks who think "a dark ending to a happy movie is daring because you don't expect it" would react if Baskin Robbins served them feces instead of chocolate ice cream. Original T2 ending is old Sarah in the park watching grown up John playing with his kid, giving similar monologue. If we consider the opinion of the majority of the fanbase regarding the movies after 2, this is indeed a better ending. Also seeing the actor playing post Judgement day John Connor living an average life solidified the idea that they stopped Judgement day.

The one where Ashton kills himself in the Butterfly Effect is the first original ending I ever saw from that movie. And I loved it!!! It was a dark and mind blowing ending. There was a scene where he was told he was not supposed to be born. Years later, talking to a friend about the movie, I realised that wasn't the official ending but an alternate one. Thing is I had watched a version downloaded from the internet. The official ending is crap with the whole "Oasis" song and meeting in the future thing.

I never disagreed more with this kind of list, except for The Birds film ending, I give you that. Your tone for movie endings is cynical, irrational, driven by teenage thrill kind of taste. Most of the film makers try to find a satisfying ending for the audience. Triumph resolution, epic conclusion, karmic outcome, meaningful epilogue, or even open ending. There is a reason behind those choices.

I thought the ending of Talented Mr Ripley was fantastic, even though Tom got everything he wanted he still couldn't escape his demons. He destroys his last chance of ever finding true happiness and now has to live with this fact and yet still he acts upon all his murderous and destructive impulses. It was so well done and so intense, leaving with that overwhelming feeling of despair.

There was a theatrical cut and another ending, apparently, along with the cord. Newer director cuts end with this, and the TC is a special feature, so uploads end with the cord most of the time. The TC was the 'didn't grow up with her,' but he bumps into her. Sort of a happy ending, which is what companies aim for most of the time when trying to mainstream, and especially above the umbilical ending, which was a way to go.

The ending of the first terminator had a scene where the factory workers found the arm and chip, and instead of giving it to the cops they send it to R&D. Then there is a pan up to reveal that the factory they were fighting in at the end of the movie was owned by a small company called Cyberdyne Systems. Not only is it a solid ending but it fore shadows the next movie they would make. There was also another cut scene where Sara finds Cyberdyne Systems in the phone book and suggest to Kyle that they take out the factory. He Says no, and breaks down because to him the future he was in was normal, and shows his inability to acclimate to the life we live. No skull mountains. lol.Thumbs up if you think this should have made the list.

+Captain Lobo To be fair, no sequels should have been made since they all kind of contradict the pre destined plot of the first movie. I also saw that butterfly effect ending at the cinema - it was perfect. His name was Evan Treborn and in the film his mum references the fact she had two miscarriages. I kinda agree about the last one, but I don't like the part with removing John Connor's skin and transplanting it onto a Terminator endoskeleton. Unless you were oversimplifying, idk the details, but that doesn't sit right with me, since in the original 2 Terminator films they explain it's artificial skin over an endoskeleton; not literally human skin ripped off a person like a onesie...not that it's impossible for the machines to somehow have the tech to make that work, but it just would make way more sense to make artificial skin that looks like John Connor, being as how they're really used to the artificial skin bit anyway.

The ending of the Disney movie Fantasia is actually an artifact that was not intended by the director. Fantasia was over-budget and behind schedule, and due out in theatres in a few days. The still photographers were racing to get every single plate of animation put on film. They were using a new kind of camera that consisted of several precisely positioned plates of glass that hung from the camera itself. The photographers were on the Ave Maria sequence when a large earthquake hit their studio, they didn't have time to check if the camera had been damaged by the quake, so they just kept shooting. What resulted is this weird ghost-like afterimage around the objects in the frame, that were not drawn by the animators, because the camera was slightly out of alignment with the various parts that were hanging off of it after the quake. The effect, though unintentional, was so haunting that they left it in, rather than re-shoot it.

Just one: X Men 3: The Last Stand= Here is a miner one but still a much better one.: Instead of having Rouge end up actually giving up her powers at the end of the movie. They should have gone the alternate scene way and have her keep her powers. Because by doing so it makes her look like she had finally accepted who she is, a great message for the general audience. But no instead they have her give up her powers, in which case she just looks like a coward in my book. And yes I know what you are going to say, but for me true courage is accepting your self for who or what you are and even that means giving up on what you believe is right. Because you know that some times you can't change what has been done.

For example I have seen the directors cut and in that version he kills himself but I once watched it on Netflix and he gos back and stops himself from meeting the girl(who's name I cant remember) but variations on that ending could be him walking past her on the street to turn and look at her or in a different version he will follow her. I'm pretty sure in one of them he speaks to her, I guess because he's time travelling constantly changing his life events the ending change. In my opinion the ending when he survived is my favourite

Actually Butterfly Effect's original ending exists. They had finished the movie and it was ready for theatrical release when the studio made them take out the original ending. They had to cut an earlier scene in the movie that actually introduced the fact that his mom had miscarried every child before he was finally born. The horrifying implication isn't just that he killed himself but that so did his siblings. He wasn't her first kid to be born grow up time travel and fuck shit up. Each one could only fix things with their own death. Now there is a version of the DVD where one side has the Theatrical Release and the other side has the Director's Cut which is the movie in it's original glory so it can be watched the way it was intended.

the cabin in the woods represented very accurately what the reaction of the audience is like when the endings aren't easily predictable imo. sure the movies would've been more memorable and entertaining if they could be bold but in the modern formulaic cinema factory creativity doesn't really survive the competition so it's rare when studios and producers actually have balls to pull off something like that. i don't really blame them

You should have pointed out that the alternate ending for the Butterfly effect ties in with something said earlier in the movie about Kutcher's character not being the first child and that his mother had miscarried multiple children before. While the alternate ending doesn't explicitly state this, it suggests that all these previous miscarriages were due to pretty much the same circumstances with them having this power.

Actually in a deleted seen Kutcher's character and his mother go to a psychic/palm-reader near or at the beginning of the movie and he is told that he doesn't have a lifeline and that he shouldn't have existed in the first place. This scene was cut specifically because it was to play the alternate ending, so since he doesn't kill himself in the womb that scene is becomes pointless does nothing for the story.

Dr. Strangelove was designed to be a satirical movie based on the cold war. I think a slapstick scene such as that would have seemed a bit out of place.

Not cool using images from T2 as your thumbnail. It implies T2 is on the list when it isn't. Not a good way to get traffic.

The Butterfly Effect's ending as Adam described WAS the original ending. When released in theaters, that was the ending seen. Most people who saw the movie on DVD experienced the Director's Cut version, which was the default version on the original release. That's the ending you remember, but in theaters, the original was different. The movie had 4 total endings.

Franz Ferdinand No it's pretty possible dude. The only reason why they changed the story so much was because they wanted the movie to be in China, if you'd read the book you know why the Chinese government might not want the movie to be shown there. It's a great book, was a mediocre film.

I am sure someone stated this but, this is one I would have loved to see.Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, where Luke turns to the Dark side.I believe there is an interview with Mark Hamill where he tried to convince George Lucas to go with that story plot.

The original ending as filmed of THE BIRDS is on the ALFRED HITCHCOCK COLLECTION DVD release from some years back. Pretty impressive, and much more chilling than what we normally see. Also, I would have included the original ending of FATAL ATTRACTION, which leaves the Glenn Close character alive (and thus the Michael Douglas character doesn't get away with adultery, etc.). The preview audience thought Close should die, and, well....

What's the big hard on for downbeat endings? I watch for escapism. If I wanted depressing real life, I'd look at how well Donald Trump is currently doing in the US elections.

The Little Shop of Horrors ended that way in the musical, and gave a satisfying finale song 'Don't Feed The Plants'. Given that it was a humourous B Movie send up, I can't think how an audience would've been depressed by the plants winning.
