Great information! We encourage organizations to more formally develop department committees that are chaired by a board member but includes primarily volunteers not on the board that we can farm for resources, including board candidacy. For example, we have a Development Committee, Finance Committee; Education Committee; etc. We use these are a our “minor leagues” that we can tap into when we need/want new board members, as well as other resources. This is very similar to your 8th method.

I'm curious if you could do a video on strategic visioning for nonprofits. I'm in the beginning stages of building our nonprofit and recognize the benefit of working with the board-- we do not have a board quite yet, but I want to be prepared with an initial strategic visioning map to offer the board for when we sit down and eventually do it together. I'm having trouble with the strategic visioning of the short term priorities. Long term seems more accessible to me at the moment due to us (me and the founder) waiting on funding and the legal side to be finished up.

That's a good topic! Could even be a few videos / series.

We are in the process of building our board at the moment. #8 has proven fruitful. Also, I know of a awesome local 'volunteer hub organization' that I may tap into for some potential board members.

Can you do a video on the process of replacing a board member? Also does the board member have to live in the United States?
@AmberMelanieSmith Жыл бұрын
Do you mean recruiting a board member to fill an empty spot, or removing one with a vote? It is generally preferred the board member lives within the geographical area being served.

this is very helpful-thank you! How would you put together an onboarding training programme?
@AmberMelanieSmith2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the needs of your specific board / community! For example, for my own Board we developed an online training.

I am thinking of looking at college students. The nonprofit i want to start centers around rare diseases. I have a podcast called Rare Connection that I try to find someone for once a week. I am looking at rare disease patents and people in the medical field or research community.

Thanks for sharing! I think if you do college students, you'll get some fresh perspectives, but you also may want to consider the rotational nature of their lives/schedules for retention, and maybe balance with some additional experienced board members who have done board service before as well for mentorship!

@@AmberMelanieSmith I do a podcast on my channel called Rare Connection besides the cooking videos also I also have a facebook page and group. I have one person from that podcast interested, and another has told me he needs to think about it. Most are saying that they are to busy with other boards. What can I realistically tell them as a time frame? I have never done this before. I am a caregiver by trade, but I do have some sales and fundraising experience.

@@Rare_Chef Do you have a sense of what tasks/work needs to be done for the nonprofit this year? I would start with your goals for the year, work it backwards, then create an estimated amount of hours per month to include in your written board description.

I'm sorry to hear that. As Board members they should have a passion for your cause.
